To move data from a Samsung Galaxy to a new or not-yet-configured iPhone, use Apple’s Move to iOS during iPhone setup. It can transfer many everyday items—including contacts, messages, photos, files, calendars, and WhatsApp messages and media—but not every app, purchase, login, or type of content moves automatically. Music, books, and PDFs require manual transfer.
Before you start: check setup, storage, and connectivity
- Check the iPhone’s setup status. Move to iOS is part of the initial iPhone setup. If you have already finished setting up the iPhone, Apple says you must erase it and start setup again to use this flow, or transfer content manually instead. Erasing removes data already on the iPhone, so save anything you want to keep before resetting it. See Apple’s Move from Android to iPhone or iPad.
- Make room on the iPhone. Check that the iPhone has enough storage for the items you select, including content on the Galaxy’s external microSD card. If the selected content exceeds available space, only some of it may transfer.
- Prepare both phones. Turn on Wi-Fi on the Galaxy, connect both devices to power, and keep them near each other. Update Chrome on Android if you want Chrome bookmarks included.
- Allow enough time. Transfer duration depends on how much content you move. Keep Move to iOS open on the Galaxy and avoid using another app or answering a call until the iPhone’s progress bar finishes.
Choose a transfer route
| Route | When it applies | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Move to iOS over temporary Wi-Fi | A new or reset iPhone during initial setup | Apple’s standard setup flow. Select the content to transfer and wait for completion. |
| Direct USB-C connection | When both exact phone models support a compatible cable connection | Apple describes this as an alternative that can make transfer faster. Check your Galaxy and iPhone ports and compatibility before using or buying a cable; it is not required if you use Wi-Fi. Details are in Apple’s migration guide. |
| App-free QR-code transfer | Supported devices running a compatible Android 17 or later version | Apple documents this option during setup for eligible devices. Support is device-dependent; check with the manufacturer rather than assuming every Galaxy qualifies. See Apple’s instructions. |
| Manual, content-specific transfer | An iPhone that is already configured, or items that Move to iOS does not move | Use the method for each content type, such as adding an account or moving documents. Apple’s manual-transfer guide covers available approaches. |
Transfer with Move to iOS during iPhone setup
- Start setting up the iPhone. At the transfer screen, tap From Android. If you have an eligible device using Apple’s app-free route, follow the QR-code instructions shown during setup instead.
- On the Galaxy, install and open Apple’s Move to iOS app if the setup flow calls for it. Follow its prompts, then enter the code displayed on the iPhone.
- Let the phones connect to the temporary Wi-Fi network created for the transfer. If you are using a compatible direct USB-C connection, connect the phones as directed by Apple and the setup prompts.
- Choose the content you want to move on the Galaxy. The time required varies with the amount of data.
- Leave both phones alone, close to each other and connected to power. Keep Move to iOS onscreen on the Galaxy; do not switch apps or answer a call. Wait until the progress bar on the iPhone has finished before using either phone.
- Complete the remaining iPhone setup prompts. Check the transferred content and install any apps that were matched or suggested.
What transfers—and what needs a separate step
Apple lists these supported categories for Move to iOS: contacts; message history and SMS; camera photos and videos; photo albums; files and folders; accessibility and display settings; web bookmarks; mail accounts; WhatsApp messages and media; Voice Memos; call history; and calendars. Some free apps may be matched when they are available in both Google Play and the App Store and support the transfer feature. That does not mean every app, paid purchase, sign-in, or app’s internal data will be recreated on the iPhone. Check important apps individually after setup.
Apple states that music, books, and PDFs need to be moved manually. Its manual-transfer guidance also describes content-specific routes for mail, contacts, calendars, photos, videos, music, books and PDFs, documents, and apps. Use the method for the particular item rather than expecting one fallback process to move everything. For email, contacts, and calendars, you may be able to add the same account on iPhone; Apple says iPhone works with providers including Google, Microsoft Exchange, and Yahoo. See Apple’s manual-transfer guidance.
Keep your phone number and check SIM or eSIM activation
Phone-number or SIM/eSIM transfer may be offered during migration, but activation is not guaranteed to finish automatically. Apple says transferring an eSIM from a non-Apple smartphone might require help from your network provider. If the number does not activate on the iPhone, contact your carrier to confirm the transfer or activation steps for your line. See Apple’s eSIM guidance.

If Move to iOS stalls or transfers only some data
- The connection drops or the transfer stalls: Keep the app open on the Galaxy and both phones powered. Apple recommends turning off Android settings that can interfere with Wi-Fi, forgetting known Wi-Fi networks, restarting both phones, or turning off cellular data before trying again.
- The iPhone receives only part of the data: Check available iPhone storage against the full amount selected, including Galaxy microSD content. If the iPhone ran out of space, Apple’s guidance is to erase it and retry only after confirming the content will fit.
- You already completed iPhone setup: To use Move to iOS, erase the iPhone and start setup over; otherwise use Apple’s manual, content-specific transfer methods. Save any iPhone data you need before erasing.
- Calls or app switching interrupted the move: Restart the transfer and keep Move to iOS onscreen on the Galaxy until the iPhone’s progress bar completes.
- eSIM activation did not finish: Ask your carrier whether it supports transferring your line from that Galaxy to the iPhone and how to complete activation.
Apple’s full setup and troubleshooting steps are in Move from Android to iPhone or iPad.
