To move data from an old iPhone to a new one, choose Quick Start for a direct transfer, Quick Start with an iCloud download, an iPhone-to-iPhone cable transfer, or a restore from a Mac or PC backup. The right option depends on whether you have the old phone, a recent backup, Wi-Fi and power, a computer, and the correct cable. These methods follow Apple Support guidance checked on October 7, 2026; labels and setup steps may change with software updates.
Choose the transfer method that fits your situation
| Method | Best fit | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Start: direct wireless transfer | You have the old iPhone and want to move data directly to the new one. | Keep both phones near each other and connected to power. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled on the old phone. You cannot use either phone normally until the transfer finishes, and Apple says timing depends on network conditions and data volume. Quick Start direct transfer is unavailable if the new device is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business. Apple Quick Start guidance |
| Quick Start with iCloud download, or iCloud backup restore | You have a usable iCloud backup, or prefer content to download while you begin using the new phone. | You need Apple Account access and Wi-Fi. With the old phone nearby, start Quick Start and select the iCloud download option; without it, choose Restore from iCloud Backup during setup. Some content continues downloading after setup. An already-configured new iPhone must be erased before using setup restore. Quick Start and iCloud transfer guidance |
| Wired iPhone-to-iPhone transfer | You have both phones and the cable or adapter combination that matches their connectors. | Compatibility depends on the source and destination iPhone generations. Follow on-screen instructions and wait for migration to finish before using the phones. Apple wired-transfer guidance |
| Mac or PC backup restore | You have a recent computer backup or want to restore using a computer. | Use Finder on macOS 10.15 or later, or Apple Devices or iTunes as appropriate for the computer. The new phone must be new or erased. An unencrypted computer backup does not transfer Health and Activity data. Apple restore guidance |
Before choosing a backup-based method, confirm that a backup exists and check its date and size. Keep your Apple Account password available. If Health and Activity data from an iPhone or Apple Watch must be included in a computer restore, use an encrypted computer backup.

1. Transfer directly with Quick Start
- On the old iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi and turn on Bluetooth. Make sure the phone is unlocked.
- Turn on the new iPhone and place it near the old one.
- Follow the setup prompts on both phones. When asked how to transfer data, choose the direct-transfer option.
- Keep the phones close together and plugged into power until migration is complete.
Apple says transfer times vary with network conditions and the amount of data being moved; it does not give a universal time estimate. If the Quick Start prompt disappears, restart both devices and try again. This direct transfer requires waiting for completion before using the phones normally.
2. Use Quick Start with an iCloud download or restore an iCloud backup
When the old iPhone is available
Start Quick Start by placing the new iPhone near the old one, then choose the option to download from iCloud when prompted. This uses the setup flow but does not require a direct phone-to-phone migration. Keep the new iPhone connected to Wi-Fi; apps, photos, and other iCloud content may continue downloading after setup.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
When the old iPhone is unavailable
- Turn on the new iPhone and connect it to Wi-Fi during setup.
- At the transfer or restore screen, choose Restore from iCloud Backup.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the backup.
- Select the appropriate backup, checking its date and size before proceeding.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi while the restore runs and content downloads.
Apple says restore progress depends on backup size and network speed. If the new iPhone has already been set up, using this setup restore path requires erasing it first, which removes its current data. Follow Apple’s restore instructions before erasing if anything on the phone needs to be kept.
Make a fresh iCloud backup on the old iPhone
- Connect the old iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings, tap your account name, then tap iCloud.
- Tap iCloud Backup, then tap Back Up Now.
- Remain connected to Wi-Fi until the backup completes.
If there is not enough iCloud storage, Apple says the phone will prompt you about storage. See Apple’s iCloud backup instructions.

4. Restore an iPhone from a Mac or PC backup
Use this method when a computer holds the backup you want. The new iPhone must be new or erased to restore during setup. An already-set-up iPhone needs to be erased first, removing its current data.
- During iPhone setup, choose the option to restore from a Mac or PC.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer that contains the backup.
- Open Finder on macOS 10.15 or later, or Apple Devices or iTunes as supported by your computer.
- Select the iPhone and choose the backup to restore. If it is encrypted, enter the backup password.
- Keep the iPhone connected while the restore completes, then follow any remaining setup prompts.
An unencrypted computer backup does not include Health and Activity data from the iPhone or Apple Watch. Apple’s restore-from-backup guidance explains the computer restore options.

What to check before you start
- Old phone availability: Quick Start direct or wired transfer needs both phones. An iCloud or computer backup restore can work without the old iPhone, provided the backup is available.
- Backup condition: Confirm the backup date and size so you select the intended version.
- Network and power: Have Wi-Fi available for setup and iCloud restoration, and keep phones powered as directed.
- Computer access: A computer restore requires the computer that holds the backup and the appropriate Apple software.
- Cable compatibility: Match cable and adapter requirements to both iPhone generations.
- Health and Activity data: A computer restore needs an encrypted backup to carry this data.
- New phone already set up: Apple requires erasing it to use the setup restore paths for iCloud or computer backups.
