You can use an eligible old phone as trade-in credit toward a new Galaxy through Samsung’s U.S. online store or Shop Samsung app. The amount is not fixed: enter your exact phone model and condition during checkout, then review the offer and return terms before ordering. Samsung’s current U.S. offers page lists trade-in offers for Galaxy S26-series purchases, but eligibility and credit can change.
How Samsung’s phone trade-in works
Samsung’s U.S. Trade-In Program applies to eligible new Samsung products ordered through Samsung.com or the Shop Samsung App. The live checkout flow determines whether your old phone qualifies and displays the credit for that purchase. The value can depend on the old phone’s model and condition, the new product, the offer, and timing; there is no universal trade-in amount.
For a current example, Samsung’s Galaxy S26 offers page describes trade-in offers for S26-series purchases. Check the exact new Galaxy and old phone in the live offer rather than relying on an amount shown elsewhere or on a prior promotion.
How to trade in your old phone
- Choose the new Galaxy and purchase route. Confirm that the Samsung U.S. online store or Shop Samsung app offer applies to the model you want.
- Enter the old phone’s exact make, model, and condition. Review the displayed credit and the offer’s requirements. Save the phone model, condition you selected, credit, promotion name, and order terms for your records.
- Compare the complete purchase terms. Look beyond the credit: compare the net price, whether credit is applied immediately or over time, condition and model requirements, deadlines, and what happens if the phone is not returned or fails inspection. If considering a carrier or retailer, include any financing, service requirements, taxes, and promotion restrictions; terms differ by offer.
- Place the order and prepare the old phone. Transfer your data, disable anti-theft protections, remove personal information, and factory reset the device before shipping it.
- Ship it according to the order instructions. Samsung’s standard terms require shipment within 15 days after you receive the new product, unless the applicable promotion gives a different period. Follow the instructions and deadline provided with your specific order.
How much is your old phone worth toward a new Galaxy?
The checkout offer is the relevant figure, and it remains subject to Samsung receiving and assessing the device. Samsung’s terms say eligible models and credits can vary by purchase and may change. No single dollar amount accurately describes what every old phone is worth toward every Galaxy. Review the current offer for your exact combination of devices at Samsung’s trade-in FAQ.

Which phones qualify?
Samsung’s standard U.S. terms require the trade-in phone to meet condition, ownership, and security requirements. The device must:
- Power on, hold a charge, and not turn off unexpectedly.
- Have a functioning display without black spots or pixelation.
- Be free of disallowed cracks, damage beyond normal wear, liquid damage, and a swollen or damaged battery.
- Not be on Samsung’s banned list.
- Be owned by you; a leased device does not qualify unless you have purchased it.
- Have anti-theft locks disabled, with personal information removed and a factory reset completed before shipment.
A cracked phone is not automatically eligible under the standard requirements. A particular promotion may expressly accept certain cracked-screen devices, so check the terms of the exact offer rather than assuming cracked phones always qualify—or never do.

Can you use a cracked-screen phone?
Only if the specific offer says it accepts that phone and damage. Samsung’s standard terms disallow certain cracks and damage, while an individual promotion may make an exception for defined cracked-screen devices. Select the condition accurately in checkout and read the offer’s eligibility details; an exception for one offer does not establish eligibility for another.
What to do before sending your phone
Set up the new Galaxy and move your information before returning the old device. Samsung identifies Smart Switch, Samsung Cloud, and cable transfer as options in its device trade-in FAQ. Once you have confirmed your photos, contacts, and other important data are accessible on the new phone, prepare the old one:

- Disable anti-theft or reactivation protections, including relevant account locks.
- Remove personal information and accounts as directed for your device.
- Factory reset the phone.
- Follow the packing and shipping instructions in your order, and send it by the deadline shown there.
Samsung says it ships the new Galaxy so you can activate it and transfer data before sending back the current phone. That sequence gives you the opportunity to check the transfer before wiping and mailing the old device.
When must you send Samsung the trade-in?
The standard U.S. terms give you 15 days after receiving the new product to ship the trade-in. A promotion can specify a different period, so the deadline in your applicable offer and order instructions takes precedence. If you miss the deadline or Samsung’s inspection finds the phone ineligible, the terms allow a chargeback; review the order terms so you know the consequences for your purchase.

How to compare Samsung’s offer with another option
A large headline credit alone does not establish which purchase route costs less. Compare the full terms for the exact phone and offer:
- Net purchase price: the amount payable after the trade-in credit and other eligible discounts.
- How credit is applied: whether it reduces the purchase price immediately or is spread over time.
- Eligibility: the models and device conditions accepted.
- Return requirements: shipping method and deadline.
- Inspection consequences: what happens if the phone is missing, late, or does not match the stated condition.
- Additional commitments: any financing, service plan, tax, or promotion-combination rules in a carrier or retailer offer.
Carrier and retailer offers can have separate conditions, so compare a specific current offer and its complete terms with Samsung’s checkout offer rather than assuming one route is always better.
