To get the best value, compare fresh trade-in quotes with realistic proceeds from selling your exact phone yourself. Match the model, storage, condition, and carrier status, then account for fees, shipping, payout restrictions, inspection changes, and the time involved. There is no route that reliably pays more for every phone.
Should I trade in my phone or sell it?
Trade-in is a structured handoff: a maker, retailer, or carrier evaluates the phone and offers a payment or credit under its terms. A marketplace sale lets you set an asking price and receive payment after a buyer purchases the phone, but you must create a listing and complete the sale.
Compare what you would actually keep, not just the headline offer or listing price. A store credit may be useful if you plan to buy there, but it is less flexible than cash. A direct sale may produce a higher net amount—or it may not, once fees, shipping, and the work of finding a buyer are included. No general statistic establishes that self-selling always pays more.

How much is my phone worth?
There is no dependable generic value for a phone without its exact configuration and condition. Apple says trade-in value depends on model, manufacturer, and condition; Best Buy lists age, condition, required accessories, and current resale prices among its evaluation factors. Check fresh offers for your specific phone rather than using an estimate for a different model or storage size. - Confirm the precise model and storage capacity.
- Record the carrier and whether the phone is unlocked.
- Describe cracked glass, functional faults, battery problems, and missing accessories honestly.
- Compare recent sold prices for the same model and condition, not just asking prices.
Where can I sell my phone for the most money?
Get several current trade-in quotes, then compare them with a realistic direct-sale estimate. Apple offers online and in-store trade-in routes in the US, with credit toward a purchase or an Apple Gift Card; its value and rules depend on the device and current terms. Best Buy describes in-store and online routes and may offer a gift card, purchase credit, or—in some cases—installment billing credit. Its promotional offers can require qualifying activation or other conditions. These are program examples, not a guarantee that either will offer the highest amount for your phone.
For a marketplace route, Swappa has sellers choose the exact product, create a listing with photos and condition details, submit it for review, and wait for a buyer; it says payment goes to the seller after a sale. To make the comparison, write down each provider’s offer, payout form, eligibility requirements, shipping or transaction costs, deadline, and what happens if inspection changes the quote. For a marketplace, subtract applicable platform and payment fees, shipping, and other costs from the price you realistically expect a buyer to pay. Check current fee terms rather than relying on an old example.
Why can a trade-in quote change?
A quoted estimate is conditional on the device and transfer meeting the provider’s requirements. Apple’s US trade-in terms say its third-party vendor may revise the original estimate after inspection if the phone’s condition does not match the description, Find My remains enabled, or the device arrives outside the stated timeframe. Other providers also evaluate factors such as condition and accessories. Before accepting a quote, check how the provider grades damage and whether the stated amount is final, conditional, or subject to inspection. Do not treat a promotional credit as cash unless the offer actually pays cash.
How do I wipe my phone before selling it?
Back up anything you want to keep, remove physical SIM and SD cards, erase personal data, and follow the phone maker’s current steps for removing account-linked locks. Apple specifically identifies Find My as a condition in its trade-in terms. - Back up and check the new phone. Save wanted photos, messages, and other data, and make sure you can access important accounts on another device.
- Remove removable cards. Take out the physical SIM and any SD card. eSIM steps vary by phone and carrier; use the maker’s instructions.
- Remove account locks. Follow the manufacturer’s current instructions to turn off device-finding or activation-lock features and remove the phone from your account as required.
- Erase the phone. Use the device’s built-in reset or erase option, following the manufacturer’s instructions for its model and operating system.
- Complete the handoff. Keep the phone until your replacement is working and the trade-in or sale is complete, when the provider’s rules allow.
A practical way to choose
- Identify the exact phone, storage, carrier, and condition.
- Collect multiple current trade-in quotes, including relevant maker, retailer, and carrier offers. Record payout type, deadlines, purchase or activation conditions, and inspection rules.
- Find recent sold-price data for the same model and condition. Estimate a plausible sale price and deduct current fees, shipping, and other costs.
- Compare expected net proceeds with the effort and uncertainty you are willing to accept. If the difference is small, convenience and buyer communication may matter more than the nominal offer.
- Back up and erase the device, remove cards and account locks, and transfer it only when you are ready to let it go.
