There is no single counter for all ChatGPT usage. Check the notice or usage page for the specific feature you are using, and follow the reset time shown in ChatGPT when one is provided. Limits depend on your plan and model, can change, and may also be controlled by a managed workspace.
Why ChatGPT can show different kinds of limits
ChatGPT does not treat regular Chat, connected apps, Work, Codex, and workspace-admin usage controls as one interchangeable meter. A weekly app cap, a model-specific allowance, and a monthly workspace limit measure different things. OpenAI says limits vary by plan and model and can change over time; workspace settings may add controls for managed accounts. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT FAQ and current model limit guidance.
Check regular Chat usage and the reset notice
When a model or feature reaches an allowance, use the notice shown in ChatGPT as your guide. OpenAI says the product displays a reset time when one is available. Follow that time rather than assuming every limit resets on the same schedule. Depending on your account and plan, another available model may still be usable after one model’s allowance is exhausted.
For the model and plan you are using, consult the current model limits page. It is more reliable than applying a number found elsewhere to every model or account, because limits can change.

View and manage a connected app’s weekly cap
For participating apps that use a ChatGPT plan, the usage page shows app usage for the current period and lets you manage the app’s weekly limit. That limit caps how much of your overall weekly ChatGPT usage the app may consume; it does not create or reserve extra usage. An app can reach its cap while some overall ChatGPT usage remains. The page does not provide a log of actions performed inside the app.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings > Usage.
- Under App limits, find the app and select Manage limits.
- Review or change its weekly limit, then save.
OpenAI describes an app limit as “a cap, not a separate pool of usage.” If an app’s limit is reached, repeatedly signing in or retrying will not restore usage. See Using your ChatGPT plan in other apps and sites.

Check Work and Codex usage in the right place
For Codex, check Settings or the usage dashboard to see which allowance is exhausted, any credit balance, and a reset time if one is shown. Usage can vary with the model, task complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools, so one task may consume a different amount from another. See OpenAI’s Codex usage guidance.
Eligible Enterprise and Edu accounts using ChatGPT Desktop can find Work and Codex usage history and monthly limit information at Settings > Usage & billing. This view is for Work and Codex, not regular Chat usage. Personal Analytics is separate and may not be available in every eligible workspace. Workspace admin limits and alerts
Enterprise and Edu admins or owners can set monthly user limits from Admin Console > Usage limits, with controls at workspace, group, and individual-user levels. Limits can be paired with alerts and usage reports, but an alert only notifies recipients; it does not stop usage. Reports and analytics may also have a freshness delay.
Billing-related controls differ by workspace billing model: credit-based plans have a workspace overage control, while token-based billing may use a workspace budget in USD. Check the current Enterprise and Edu admin documentation for the controls that apply to your workspace.

Understand credits before enabling them
Credits are optional pay-as-you-go usage after included limits, where supported and available to the account. Buying credits does not change the plan or raise its included limit. OpenAI currently describes supported credit use for Codex, ChatGPT Work, and ChatGPT for Excel when available; credits are not a general top-up for ordinary Chat text messages.
Check Settings > Usage for availability, and review automatic credit-purchase preferences separately before enabling credit use. Eligibility and supported features can vary. See OpenAI’s credit usage documentation.

A practical routine for avoiding interruptions
- Check the relevant usage surface for the workload: Chat’s notice, Settings > Usage for participating apps, or the Work/Codex dashboard.
- When ChatGPT displays a reset time, plan around that time; do not assume different models and features share a reset schedule.
- For participating apps, set a weekly cap that reflects how much of your overall weekly usage you want the app to be able to consume.
- If you administer an Enterprise or Edu workspace, configure monthly limits for the appropriate workspace, group, or users; treat alerts as notifications, not blocking controls.
- Before enabling credits, confirm that your account and feature are supported and check any automatic purchase preference.
