To track visual changes after a WordPress theme update, save screenshots of representative pages before the update, capture those same pages under the same conditions afterward, and review the differences before approving a new baseline. Test on staging when practical, especially if a layout problem could disrupt sales or other important tasks.
Build a reliable before-and-after comparison
- Choose representative pages. Include more than the homepage: select pages that cover important templates and theme-dependent components, such as a landing page, an article, an archive, navigation, and a form or shop page if your site has one. Include pages using custom blocks, widgets, or distinctive layouts. There is no universal page count; choose enough to cover the site’s important patterns.
- Capture a baseline before updating. Save a known-good screenshot for each selected URL. Record the date, theme version, viewport dimensions, browser or rendering environment, login state, and relevant page state so you can reproduce the capture.
- Use desktop and mobile sizes where they matter. A desktop capture cannot show every responsive problem. Keep the chosen viewport dimensions consistent between the old and new screenshots.
- Update on a staging or development copy when possible. This lets you inspect the changed theme without exposing visitors to a broken layout. Keep a backup or another rollback route before changing the live site.
- Capture the same pages again. After updating, use the same URLs, viewport sizes, browser environment, login state, and page state. Compare each new screenshot with its matching baseline.
- Review differences and test important journeys. A visual diff signals that something changed; it cannot tell you whether the change was intended. Inspect the affected areas and try key user tasks before accepting the update.
- Approve a new baseline deliberately. If the visual changes are intentional and the site works as expected, save the new screenshots as the approved reference. Retain the prior baseline and update record so you can diagnose later regressions.
WordPress documentation recommends keeping themes and plugins updated, and also recommends regular backups and a rollback option. Those safeguards do different jobs: screenshot comparisons reveal rendered changes, while backups help you recover from a faulty update. Choose a comparison method that fits your site

For a small site, a repeatable checklist and saved captures may be sufficient. Name files so the page, viewport, and capture date are clear, and keep each new capture next to its corresponding baseline. Manual work is simple to start but can become inconsistent or time-consuming as the number of pages and screen sizes grows.
WordPress plugin: VRTs

Playwright for developer-owned tests
Playwright Test supports screenshot assertions with toHaveScreenshot(). Its documentation recommends committing the reference snapshot directory so changes can be reviewed. When a UI change is intentional, review it and update the approved reference images rather than automatically replacing them. Cover the pages and states most likely to reveal regressions
Pick pages based on templates and components, not just traffic. A theme may render an article correctly but mishandle an archive, a custom block, a menu, or a form. WordPress’s Theme Handbook recommends development-environment testing with varied content and settings, and points to imported test content and checks of common WordPress features. - Include a typical page for each important template, such as posts, archives, and landing pages.
- Include theme-dependent features such as menus, widgets, custom blocks, and site-specific layouts.
- Capture key pages at desktop and mobile widths when responsive behavior matters.
- Keep login and page state consistent. A logged-in admin bar, personalized content, or a dismissed consent banner can alter the screenshot.
- Choose a stable point in the page’s loading cycle. Lazy-loaded images, animations, carousels, ads, and other changing content can make otherwise identical captures look different.
Interpret screenshot differences without mistaking noise for a bug
A comparison identifies pixels or regions that changed; a person still has to decide whether the difference is expected and whether it matters. Check changed areas for their effect on visual hierarchy, readability, responsive layout, images, menus, and user actions. A design change may be deliberate, while a shifted navigation bar or clipped mobile content may be a regression.

Dynamic content, ads, animations, carousels, lazy loading, and cookie banners can create noisy comparisons. Where your chosen tool supports it, stabilize or exclude these elements; VRTs, for example, documents hiding elements and adjusting alert thresholds. Update safely and keep a recovery route

For command-line updates, WP-CLI’s wp theme update command can target one or more themes, update all themes with available updates, exclude named themes, or select a version or release scope. Troubleshoot inconsistent or noisy comparisons
- The whole page looks different. Confirm that the old and new captures use the same URL, viewport, browser or rendering environment, login state, and page state. Check that the page finished loading before the capture.
- Only images or lower-page content differ. Lazy loading or delayed loading may mean the screenshots were taken at different times or scroll positions. Use a consistent capture process and verify that the relevant content has loaded before saving the screenshot.
- Differences appear in rotating or personalized areas. Ads, carousels, animations, banners, and personalized content can change between captures. Stabilize or exclude them if the tool supports it, or assess those regions separately.
- A plugin cannot capture the site. The VRTs listing says public accessibility is generally required; password protection or a firewall can block its external screenshot service. Check access and the plugin’s current requirements.
- An alert shows a difference but the page seems fine. Review the changed area against the intended design and test the affected user journey. Adjust exclusions or thresholds only when the variation is understood; do not use them to hide unexplained layout changes.
- The update breaks the live site. Use the backup or rollback route prepared before updating. Diagnose the problem on staging where possible, and do not approve a new screenshot baseline until the issue is resolved or the change is confirmed as intentional.
