Use screenshot-based visual regression testing: capture representative pages and interactive states, save approved screenshots as baselines, then compare each later run against them. For JavaScript-heavy sites, the key is to wait for the intended UI state and control changing content so differences reflect real design changes rather than timing or live data. Playwright Test provides this workflow with toHaveScreenshot().
How visual regression checks work
A visual regression check renders a page in a browser and compares the resulting screenshot with an approved reference image. Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() can create the reference on the first run and compare subsequent captures against it. When a comparison differs, inspect the diff to decide whether the application changed unexpectedly or the new appearance is intentional. See Playwright visual comparisons.
This is useful for JavaScript-heavy pages because tests can first establish a specific state—such as an open menu, loaded results, or an expanded panel—and then capture that state instead of comparing only the initial page load.
Set up a Playwright screenshot baseline
The following minimal example uses Playwright Test. Save it as a test file such as tests/home.spec.ts in a project with Playwright Test installed. Replace the example URL and selectors with your site’s route and UI.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Welcome' }).waitFor();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Run the test with npx playwright test. On its first run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot. Review and retain that image as a project artifact; later runs compare against it. The first image is not automatically proof that the design is correct, so check it before treating it as the approved baseline.
Capture the state that matters
Choose routes and states based on what could regress, not merely what is easiest to load. For example, test a navigation menu while open, a populated search result, a validation message, or a responsive layout at the viewport your users rely on. Make the test reach that state before calling toHaveScreenshot(); otherwise, a slow script or delayed rendering can produce a capture of an intermediate state.
Use stable locators and explicit waits for meaningful page content. If the page relies on asynchronous data, use test data or a predictable fixture where possible. Waiting for a heading or result container is generally more meaningful than assuming a fixed delay will always be enough.

Keep the rendering environment consistent
Screenshot output can vary with the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode—not only with application code. Generate baselines and comparison screenshots in the same environment where possible, including the same browser project and CI environment. Playwright documents these sources of rendering variation in its visual comparison guidance.
Make captures deterministic without hiding real regressions
Live timestamps, rotating promotions, animation, avatars, and other volatile regions can create noisy diffs. First consider making test data stable or waiting for the page to finish the behavior under test. If a region is irrelevant to the visual check and cannot be stabilized, Playwright documents applying a stylesheet during capture to filter changing content. Keep that filtering narrow: masking a large or important area could conceal a genuine regression.
For example, a capture stylesheet can hide a specific timestamp selector. The selector must match your application, and the chosen style should affect only content you have explicitly decided not to test:

Review and update baselines deliberately
- Run the visual test and inspect any generated diff rather than accepting it automatically.
- Decide whether the difference is an unintended regression, a nondeterministic capture, or an approved design change.
- Fix unstable test setup or the application if the diff is noise; do not update the baseline to make a failing test pass without understanding the change.
- For an intentional change, use Playwright’s snapshot update workflow, review the new reference, and commit the updated baseline with the code change.
Baselines are maintained project artifacts. Treating their changes as reviewable code helps preserve an audit trail of intentional visual updates.

Choose between local comparison and hosted review
Playwright’s built-in comparison is a direct option when your team wants screenshots and baselines managed alongside its tests. If you need a hosted visual-review workflow, Applitools documents Eyes checkpoints in Playwright, and Percy provides a Playwright client library: Applitools integration and Percy client library. Those documents establish integration paths; they do not establish a universal winner, independent performance comparison, or current pricing.

For a one-off or externally triggered capture, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from a GET request. The following cURL command saves a WebP screenshot; replace the example URL and provide your API key:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. This API call captures a page, but it does not itself create or compare approved visual baselines.

Troubleshooting visual test failures
The screenshot changes between runs without a code change
Check whether the test ran in a different operating system, browser version, headless mode, or other rendering environment. Then look for live data, animation, delayed assets, or incomplete page state. Keep the environment consistent and stabilize or narrowly filter volatile content.
The capture shows a loading or incomplete state
Wait for a locator that indicates the intended UI is ready, such as the results container or a key heading. For JavaScript-driven interactions, perform the action in the test and wait for its resulting state before capturing. Avoid relying only on a short fixed delay, which can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
A baseline update would hide a real issue
Do not update snapshots until you have reviewed the diff and confirmed the new appearance is expected. If it is not, fix the application or test. If the change is intentional, update only the affected references and include them with the reviewed code change.
