When you return to Skyrim and cannot remember what to do next, open the Journal, read the current objective, activate the quest you want to follow, then use its map or compass marker as a clue. Check Miscellaneous as well as named quests: its objectives can lead to quests, locations, and rewards. A marker is not a guaranteed route, and the Journal cannot be assumed to recover every objective or prevent every quest from being missed.
Track a quest with a simple Journal-to-marker loop
- Open the Journal and read the quest entry. Check both its description and its current objective instead of relying on remembered dialogue. Bethesda Support recommends reviewing the quest log when you are unsure how to complete a quest. See Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition quest troubleshooting guidance and its original Skyrim support guidance.
- Activate the quest you intend to work on. In the PC manual’s original control mapping, press J to open the Journal, select the quest, and press Enter to set it active. Bethesda’s PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 manuals describe active quest targets appearing on the compass and world or local maps. Button mappings vary by platform and can be reassigned, so use the prompts and control settings for your edition. The manuals are available from Bethesda’s manuals page.
- Check the compass and map. The PC manual’s original mapping uses M to open the world map at the quest target. Treat that as a PC-manual example, not a universal key. Use the marker to identify a destination, then compare it with the Journal text and the surroundings; it is not a step-by-step route.
- Return to the Journal if the marker is unclear. Re-read what the objective asks you to do and look around the marked area, including other floors or entrances. Bethesda’s advice is to investigate available quest markers alongside the quest log, not to assume a marker alone explains the task.
The controls above come from older PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 manuals. They establish the general method, not verified button-by-button instructions for every current release, console generation, or custom layout.
Check Miscellaneous objectives, not just named quests
In the Journal, review Miscellaneous as well as the main, faction, and other named quest categories. The PC manual says its special objectives may lead to new quests, locations, and rewards. If you have not checked this category recently, scan its entries and activate one when you decide to pursue it.
This routine helps you notice objectives already recorded in the Journal; it is not a guarantee that every objective will be logged or that every quest can be recovered there. The available guidance does not establish the missability or failure conditions of every Skyrim quest.

Choose how much you want to rely on markers
| Approach | Navigation help | Spoiler exposure | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Follow the active marker | Provides a destination on the compass or map in the documented manuals’ systems, but not necessarily a usable route. | Can direct you toward a destination before you have explored it naturally. | Players who want a quicker way to orient themselves. |
| Read the objective first and explore | Relies more on the Journal wording and your own search; vague descriptions can make progress less certain. | Leaves more room to discover the destination through play. | Players who prefer less guidance and do not mind taking notes. |
You can combine the approaches: read the entry first, use the marker when useful, and switch back to the Journal if it stops making sense. Grouping objectives that point to the same town or region is also a practical way to organize a session: inspect each entry, choose what to activate, and handle nearby tasks together. That is a player-organizing tactic, not an automatic Journal feature.
When a quest marker seems to point the wrong way
A marker identifies a target, but it may not make the route obvious. One player discussion describes a marker leading out of a town and then appearing to point back through its entrance; commenters also describe confusing barriers or floors. These are individual reports, not an official rule or a measure of how often it happens.

- Read the current Journal objective again and compare its wording with the marker.
- Look for another entrance, a different floor, or a nearby path to the destination.
- Search the destination area rather than assuming the marker itself is a traversable route.
- If an NPC appears stuck or missing, leave the area and return later; Bethesda gives this as troubleshooting advice for Skyrim Special Edition and Switch.
- If the quest still appears broken, Bethesda’s stated fallback is to try an earlier save. Save manually before experimenting where your platform permits; loading that earlier save means losing progress made afterward.
Do not treat console commands as a universal fix. They are not available on every platform, and forcing a quest stage can skip content.
Keep a low-spoiler routine for returning to Skyrim
- Open the Journal and read the exact objective you last left unfinished.
- Review Miscellaneous for special objectives you may have overlooked.
- Activate one intended task and check its marker on the compass or map.
- If the marker seems indirect, use the objective text and nearby landmarks to find the destination.
- Before testing troubleshooting steps on a quest that may be broken, make a manual save when possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Skyrim quest marker point the wrong way?
A marker shows a target, not necessarily a traversable route. Re-read the Journal objective, then check for another entrance or floor and search the destination area. Reports of indirect or confusing markers are anecdotal, not proof that the quest is broken.
