Track a batch screenshot run in two places: use your test runner or CI report to see which tests completed and which failed, then inspect the expected and actual screenshot artifacts to understand visual differences. Those are separate jobs. In Playwright Test, the first run can create a reference image; later runs compare captures against it. Exact progress indicators and report features depend on your chosen reporter and CI provider.
What progress tracking tells you—and what it does not
A test report answers operational questions: which tests ran, whether they passed, and where failures occurred. Screenshot artifacts answer a different question: how a page capture differs from its reference. A progress bar or final failure count cannot explain a pixel difference, and an image diff alone does not establish how far the batch has progressed.
For any framework, select a reporter that exposes the per-test status or summary you need, and make its output available in CI. Do not assume every runner has the same live states, report layout, artifact links, or dashboard. Check the documentation for the installed runner and CI provider before configuring exact labels or upload steps.
How Playwright Test handles screenshot comparisons
First run: create a reference
Playwright’s visual comparison workflow uses reference screenshots, also called snapshots. A first run can generate a reference image; subsequent runs compare the new capture with that reference. Therefore, a missing expected image on an initial run may mean the baseline is being created, not that an existing reference has regressed. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Later runs: compare captures
When an assertion compares a screenshot, Playwright waits for two consecutive page screenshots to produce the same result before it compares the last capture. This helps avoid comparing while the page is still changing, but it does not make inherently dynamic content deterministic. Refer to the PageAssertions API documentation for the behavior of screenshot assertions.
Keep rendering conditions consistent
Screenshot output can vary with the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Create and compare baselines in the same rendering environment where practical. Stabilize test data and wait for meaningful page readiness; hide or control volatile elements such as timestamps, rotating content, or animations using the visual-comparison controls your Playwright version supports.

A practical workflow for a large screenshot batch
- Choose observable reporting. Configure the test runner’s reporter and CI job so the run’s per-test output or end summary is easy to find. Verify what states and artifact links that particular reporter actually exposes.
- Standardize the capture environment. Use consistent browser and operating-system versions, headless settings, and relevant rendering conditions for baseline creation and comparison.
- Run the batch and follow test status. Use the runner or CI report to identify completed and failed tests. Treat a test failure as a signal to investigate, not as proof that the screenshot itself is the cause.
- Open screenshot artifacts for visual failures. Locate the expected and actual images, and any generated diff, through the test output, snapshot path, or report. Compare the images to determine what changed.
- Inspect execution context when the image is not enough. Use the available trace or report artifacts to understand what the test did and what the page looked like around the failure. A screenshot shows an image state; it does not necessarily reveal why the page reached that state.
- Update references only for intentional changes. Playwright documents updating snapshots with
--update-snapshots. Review the new image changes, approve only expected visual updates, and commit the updated reference files so reviewers can inspect them alongside the code.
How to investigate a failed or apparently stuck test
The run has no visible per-test updates
Check whether the configured reporter emits live progress or only a summary at the end, and whether CI buffers or hides its output. The available evidence does not establish a universal progress-bar interface; consult the reporter and CI documentation for the exact behavior and settings.
An expected screenshot is missing
Determine whether this is the initial baseline-generation run or a later comparison. In Playwright, the first run can create the expected screenshot. A missing reference in that situation differs from a mismatch against an established baseline.

The image differs between machines or runs
Compare browser and operating-system versions, headless mode, settings, and other rendering conditions. Then look for changing page content and make it stable or exclude it using supported screenshot controls. Keep baseline generation and verification as similar as possible.
The test failed but the screenshot does not explain why
Inspect the test’s snapshot path and any report artifacts, then open the execution trace if available. Playwright’s TestInfo documentation describes test-related information and output paths. The Trace Viewer introduction is on Playwright’s /next/ documentation path, so check it against the Playwright version installed in your project before relying on exact interface details.

What to evaluate in a reporter or CI setup
- Progress timing: Does it show per-test updates during execution, or only an end-of-run summary?
- Visual evidence: Does the report preserve or link to expected, actual, and diff images?
- Execution context: Can you reach traces or other artifacts from a failed test?
- Baseline workflow: Are reference files stored and reviewed in a way that makes intentional changes clear?
- Environment consistency: Can the same browser and operating-system conditions be used to create and check baselines?
- Artifact availability: Is it straightforward to publish and retrieve reports and images through your CI provider?
These are selection criteria, not claims that one reporter or CI service is faster or more reliable than another. The right configuration depends on your runner, reporter, and CI platform.
