To track a product’s displayed price on an Indian shopping site, use Puppeteer to open the product page, wait for that site’s price element, save its text with the product URL and capture time, and take a screenshot. A completed navigation does not prove the price loaded or that it is the correct variant, seller, or checkout total; treat each capture as a dated observation, not a guaranteed price quote.
What this workflow can—and cannot—tell you
Puppeteer automates a browser, so it can capture prices rendered by JavaScript and save the page or a specific element as an image. Its documentation demonstrates navigating with page.goto() and capturing with page.screenshot(). The price selector and readiness condition must be specific to the retailer’s page; there is no universal price selector.
A screenshot records what the browser rendered for that request. It does not prove the same price was available to every shopper or establish the final amount payable after delivery, fees, or checkout adjustments. Product variant, seller, delivery location, account state, discounts, stock, and currency formatting can change what appears. Store relevant context alongside each capture.
Before automating a retailer
Check the current terms and permissions that apply to your intended use, and avoid excessive polling. The sources available here do not establish that automated consumer collection—or reuse of screenshots—is permitted for every Indian retailer. This is especially important for Flipkart: its documented APIs are Marketplace Seller APIs for seller processes, and its production information is governed by Marketplace terms. Listing Management APIs expose seller listing attributes such as selling price, MRP, and shipping fees; that does not make them a public consumer price-monitoring API.

Build a site-specific Puppeteer capture
The example below is an illustrative pattern based on Puppeteer’s documented APIs, not tested against a live retailer. Supply a product URL and selector through environment variables, and adapt the selector and any readiness condition to the page you are authorized to access. Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. Puppeteer’s documentation showed version 25.12.0 when accessed; check its current documentation for version-specific behavior.

Keep the URL explicit rather than discovering or guessing product links. Store the resulting JSON record and PNG together or move both into your chosen storage system.

Why wait for the price, not just navigation
page.goto() resolves with the main-resource response, but product content can render after the initial document load. Puppeteer recommends locator APIs for selecting and interacting with elements because they wait for an element to be present and ready. The example waits for the configured price locator, then reads its text. waitForSelector() is a lower-level alternative when you need its specific wait options.
A general network-idle condition can be useful, and Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates networkidle2, but quiet network activity alone does not confirm that the correct price is visible. Prefer the actual price element or another explicit, page-specific readiness condition.

Choose screenshot scope
- Full page: use
{ fullPage: true }when surrounding product details help identify what was captured. - Price or product element: take an element screenshot when compact evidence is more useful. Puppeteer’s element screenshot workflow scrolls the target into view as needed.
- Clipped region: use the screenshot
clipoption when you know the viewport region to preserve.
Screenshot options include path, fullPage, and clip. Whichever scope you choose, keep the product identity and timestamp outside the image too; screenshots alone are harder to compare reliably.
Keep observations comparable over time
For every capture, save at least the product URL or stable identifier, capture timestamp, displayed price text, and screenshot path. For meaningful comparisons, also record relevant context you control or can observe, such as selected variant, seller, delivery location, stock text, and whether you were signed in. Do not silently normalize away the original displayed text: formatting, discounts, and labels may matter later.

Schedule captures conservatively and keep an error record when a run fails. A missing price is not a zero price; distinguish a missing element, a timeout, a failed navigation, and a successful capture. Product pages can change markup, so review selectors when failures begin rather than assuming that yesterday’s selector remains valid.

- Navigation returns an error status: inspect
response.status(). In headless shell mode, Puppeteer notes that valid HTTP error statuses such as 404 or 500 may be returned without throwing. Treat an error response as a failed capture rather than continuing to record a price. - The price locator times out: the selector may be wrong or stale, the content may not have rendered, or a consent, location, or other dialog may be blocking the page. Verify the page and selector for the exact product and state; handle dialogs only in ways allowed by the retailer.
- The element exists but the value is blank or unexpected: inspect whether the selector matches the visible price rather than a hidden template, crossed-out original price, or another variant. Store the raw text and review a screenshot before treating the value as comparable.
- The page loads but shows the wrong product context: confirm the exact URL and preserve selected variant, seller, location, and account context. A browser capture does not make those conditions uniform.
- The browser process remains open after an error: keep browser cleanup in a
finallyblock as shown, and capture failures at the job boundary so a broken run does not disappear silently.

When a native price history is enough
For Amazon-only shopping, Amazon reported in an article published May 1, 2026 and updated June 24, 2026 that its customer price-history feature was available in India, with 30-, 90-, and 365-day views; Amazon said 365-day insights were rolling out at that time. Amazon also reported that more than 50 million customers had used the feature. That usage figure is Amazon’s own report, not an independently verified measure. The native feature avoids maintaining a browser job, but the cited description does not establish cross-marketplace tracking.

Does a successful Puppeteer navigation mean the product price was captured?
No. Navigation only establishes that the main resource responded; the script must separately wait for and validate the page-specific price content.
Can I use Flipkart’s seller API to track public prices as a consumer?
The documented APIs are seller-oriented and do not establish a public consumer price-monitoring API. Check current applicable terms and permissions before automating collection.
