Track a player as a logical member of a match, not as a socket. Authenticate every new connection, associate it with the player’s stable identity and valid session, and update authoritative match state. If reconnects can reach another server process, share only the session or reservation data those processes need, with atomic updates and an explicit expiry policy.

Model the player separately from the connection

A reconnect creates a new transport connection. It does not, by itself, prove that the player is entitled to rejoin a match or that an earlier connection has cleanly disappeared. Keep distinct records or states for:

  • Connection: the current socket or transport instance, which can change on reconnect.
  • Logical player: the authenticated user identity used for match membership.
  • Player session or slot: a platform-issued session identifier when the hosting system requires one.
  • Match presence: whether that player is currently represented in authoritative match state.
  • Account online status: a broader product-level status that may have a different authority and lifetime.

Use the authenticated user ID as the membership key where that fits the game, and retain a separate session or connection identifier when needed to validate a reserved server slot. A user ID alone may not identify a particular hosting slot; a connection ID alone is unstable across reconnects and may allow multiple connections to look like separate players.

Choose the authority for match membership

Keep authoritative membership with the process or framework that owns the match. On join and leave events, update that state. If one process owns a match, an in-process map can be sufficient. It will not automatically follow a reconnect routed to a different process.

For example, Nakama’s authoritative multiplayer Go handler can keep presences in match state keyed by user ID, add them in MatchJoin, and remove them in MatchLeave. Its MatchSignal callback can also mark a user ID or session ID as reserved before a later join attempt. Those hooks provide lifecycle points; the game still decides which reconnects qualify and how long a reservation lasts. See Nakama’s Go match handler documentation.

Validate each reconnect before restoring presence

  1. Accept a new connection and authenticate it. Validate credentials or a server-issued player-session token before associating the connection with existing match state.
  2. Resolve the logical player and match. Look up the authenticated player’s reservation or current match membership, rather than trusting a client claim that it was previously present.
  3. Check reconnect eligibility. Apply the game’s rules for match phase, reservation expiry, duplicate sessions, and any ban or removal state.
  4. Claim the membership safely. Ensure only the intended current connection or session can own that player’s presence, then update authoritative match state.
  5. Restore gameplay state if permitted. Rejoining a slot and restoring the player’s gameplay state are separate operations; restore the appropriate match state explicitly.

Amazon GameLift Servers’ Go SDK provides a hosting-level validation step: AcceptPlayerSession(playerSessionID) validates the supplied player session ID and changes its slot from RESERVED to ACTIVE. That validates the hosting session; it does not itself restore gameplay state. GameLift’s Go server SDK actions also include ActivateGameSession(), which signals that initialization is complete and the server can receive players.

Decide whether presence can cross processes

If all match reads and writes happen in one authoritative process, keep the match map there and avoid adding a shared store merely to mirror every heartbeat. If reconnects may be routed to another process, or multiple processes need to inspect session status, use a shared record for the cross-process facts—such as player/session identity, match ID, last activity, and reservation status. The match owner should remain the authority for gameplay membership unless the architecture deliberately assigns that role elsewhere.

Redis documents a Go session-store pattern in which server-side session data is shared across application servers and inactive records expire through TTLs. The example refreshes TTL on activity and deletes the session key at logout. This is a web-session pattern that can inform game presence storage; it is not a game-specific guarantee or a complete Go game-presence implementation. Redis’s session-storage guide describes the pattern.

A shared record can also carry an application-defined generation or ownership token. On reconnect, update or compare that value atomically so a stale connection cannot overwrite a newer claim. This token is an architectural option, not a requirement imposed by Go, Redis, GameLift, or Nakama.

Make simultaneous reconnects and notifications safe

Two reconnect attempts can race to claim the same player membership. Serialize changes at the match owner, or use an atomic compare-and-update in the shared store. Redis’s matchmaking tutorial illustrates the underlying concurrency concern: it uses WATCH/MULTI to prevent concurrent queue changes from acting on stale state. It also demonstrates sorted sets for ordered queues, hashes for metadata, expiring JSON room records, and Pub/Sub notifications. The tutorial is an Express API example, not Go presence code; its data-model and concurrency ideas should not be mistaken for a ready-made Go implementation. Redis’s matchmaking tutorial was published March 25, 2026.

Use Pub/Sub or another event mechanism to tell downstream consumers that presence changed, but treat the persisted authoritative state as the source of truth. A subscriber may miss a notification; it should be able to refresh from stored state rather than infer current membership from events alone.

With GameLift, RemovePlayerSession(playerSessionID) reports a disconnection and returns the slot to available. Use it in the hosting-session lifecycle as intended, while separately deciding whether the game retains a gameplay-level reservation or allows restoration. DescribePlayerSessions() can retrieve session data for one player session, one game session, or sessions associated with a player ID. These operations concern hosting sessions and slots; they do not decide the game’s reconnect window. The GameLift Go SDK action reference documents these calls.

Which approach fits your server?

Approach Best fit Reconnect behavior and trade-off
In-process match state One process owns the authoritative match. Simple and direct, but state does not automatically follow a reconnect routed to another process.
Framework match callbacks and reservations A framework such as Nakama owns match lifecycle. Provides structured join/leave state and a reservation hook; grace periods and restoration rules remain game-specific.
Shared Redis session or presence record Multiple processes need shared session visibility. TTL can clean up stale records; the application must choose expiry, handle concurrent updates, and define authoritative match ownership.
Hosted player-session lifecycle A hosting service such as GameLift issues and validates player-session IDs. Provides explicit slot activation and removal operations; gameplay restoration remains game logic.

Before choosing, identify who owns authoritative match state, whether reconnects can land on another process, how identity and session tokens are validated, how competing reconnects are made atomic, how stale records are removed, and whether the host or game framework owns the player-slot lifecycle.
