Urlwatch can alert you when a tracked recruitment page changes. To use it for Indian government job notifications, monitor the recruiting organisation’s official recruitment or examination page, give each page its own named job, filter out unrelated page content, and verify every alert against the original notice before acting. Urlwatch detects changes; it does not certify a vacancy or guarantee complete coverage.
Choose official recruitment pages to monitor
Start with the recruitment, vacancy, active-examination, or notification page maintained by the organisation that is hiring. Choose agencies and departments according to the roles and locations you care about; one Urlwatch job cannot guarantee coverage of every central and state government vacancy.
India’s Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and Apps identify gov.in and nic.in domains as a strong indicator of official status. Treat the domain as a clue, not proof by itself: check that the organisation and notice are genuine. The guidelines also say recruitment information should make the notice’s title, language, purpose or application procedure, and validity clear where applicable, and that outdated notices should be removed or archived.
The National Career Service (NCS), managed by the Ministry of Labour & Employment, warns that fraudulent sites or people may falsely claim an association with NCS. It says its services are free and advises jobseekers to verify information through the official NCS website. A legacy NCS government-vacancies directory URL currently redirects to the NCS homepage, so use current navigation from the relevant official agency instead of relying on that old directory.

Set up named Urlwatch jobs
Urlwatch retrieves each configured job, applies its filters, compares the result with the previously stored state, and reports changes. It supports ordinary URL retrieval, browser navigation for JavaScript-rendered pages, and shell-command jobs. The project describes Urlwatch as a way to watch webpage changes and receive notifications by email, in a terminal, or through third-party services. See the Urlwatch introduction and official project page. The project page identifies version 2.29, dated 2024-10-28; that is the version listed on that page, not a claim that no later release exists.
- Make a source list. Record the official page URL for each recruiting agency or department you want to follow. Prefer the hiring body’s own recruitment or examination page.
- Edit the job list. Run
urlwatch --edit. Urlwatch stores jobs as YAML, with jobs separated by---. Give each one a human-readablenameand the page address in itsurlfield. The job documentation describes the job format. - Start with a simple retrieval. A basic job can look like this:

- Run Urlwatch to establish a baseline. The first run records the current filtered output. Later runs compare against that state, so meaningful differences can be reported.
- Inspect the changed text and open the source page. Confirm that the alert concerns a notice, corrigendum, vacancy detail, or deadline rather than an unrelated page update.
Filter page noise without hiding notices
Recruitment pages often contain navigation, footers, counters, and other content that changes without affecting a notice. Urlwatch supports CSS and XPath selection, as well as chained filters—for example, selecting HTML, converting it to text, and then grepping or sorting the result.

Check that the preview retains the information you need, including notice titles and relevant deadlines. The filter documentation notes that only new content is processed with the current filter. Changing a filter does not retroactively reprocess the old snapshot, so after a filter change, inspect the test output and understand how the new comparison behaves before relying on alerts.

Use browser rendering only when the page requires it
Begin with an ordinary URL job. If the retrieved page lacks the notices or content visible in a browser, the site may rely on JavaScript rendering. Urlwatch’s browser-navigation URL variant can handle such pages, but it is more resource-intensive and requires the optional Playwright package and installed browsers. Follow the job documentation for the browser job configuration. Avoid adding browser setup unless a standard retrieval fails to include the content you need.
Schedule runs and choose a useful alert route
Urlwatch can report changes in the console and through configured reporters such as email. Its quick-start documentation describes scheduling recurring runs with cron. Choose an interval that fits your needs and the source site; there is no universally correct interval established for government recruitment pages. Make sure the machine or service that runs Urlwatch is available at the scheduled time and that the chosen reporter is configured to reach you.

Verify an alert before taking action
A change alert is a prompt to investigate, not confirmation that a new eligible vacancy exists. Open the recruiting body’s official page and notice, then independently check the notice title, application procedure, eligibility, validity, and deadline. Urlwatch does not validate authenticity, determine your eligibility, or confirm that a deadline is current. Be wary of impostor sites and fee requests; NCS says its services are free and advises verification through its official site.

Troubleshooting
- Every run reports lots of changes. The job may include volatile navigation or other irrelevant content. Use a CSS or XPath selector to focus on the relevant section, then preview it with
urlwatch --test-filter. - A notice visible in the browser is missing from the alert output. Check whether the ordinary URL retrieval contains that content. If not, the page may require JavaScript; consider a browser job and account for its Playwright and browser requirements.
- The filter preview omits a title or deadline. Revise the selector or chained filters, then test again. Do not rely on a filter until its output retains the notice details you need.
- A filter change produces confusing comparisons. Current filters apply to new content, not retroactively to the old snapshot. Test the new output and treat the resulting comparison cautiously.
- No alert arrives. Confirm that the scheduled Urlwatch run executes, inspect its console output, and verify the reporter configuration and delivery route. A configured job only helps when it runs and its report reaches you.
- An alert looks like an official recruitment update but links elsewhere. Navigate independently to the recruiting organisation’s verified official site and locate the notice there before submitting information or payment.
