That can reveal changes in listed prices, availability, assortment, or product attributes. It does not, by itself, establish sales, revenue, or market share.
What web scraping can—and cannot—tell you
Scraping is a way to collect observations; the trend comes from how consistently you collect and analyze them. E-commerce applications include price monitoring, product tracking, market research, and brand sentiment, as described in Apify’s 2022 e-commerce guide. A product page shows what was displayed to your crawler at a particular time. It is not automatically a record of completed purchases or total demand.
Start with a question narrow enough to answer from the pages you can access. For example: “How did listed prices change for these 40 models at these five storefronts this month?” State the source set, geography, observation window, and known gaps alongside any result. Do not turn a small or uneven sample into a claim about the whole market.
What data should I track?
Collect only fields that help answer the question. A practical starting record includes:

- Source URL, storefront or region, and observation timestamp.
- A stable product identifier, such as the seller’s SKU or product ID, plus the product name as displayed.
- Displayed price and currency; keep sale price and shipping separate when visible.
- Availability text as shown, such as “in stock” or “sold out.”
- Category, brand, and only the attributes needed for grouping or comparison.
Keep the raw value as well as its normalized counterpart. For instance, retain the page’s original availability phrase alongside a normalized status. This lets you revisit mapping decisions without erasing what the page actually showed. Avoid gathering personal information unrelated to the analysis.
Use consistent identifiers for sources and products. A title change or a page redesign should not silently create a new product series or rewrite earlier observations. When product matching is uncertain, record the uncertainty rather than combining records simply because names look similar.
How to build a repeatable tracking workflow
1. Define the question and sample
Choose the product category, sources, geography, and time window before collecting. Decide what counts as a comparable product and how you will handle bundles, variants, shipping, discounts, and currency. If the objective is competitor price monitoring, a fixed list of equivalent products is usually more interpretable than a changing set of search results.
2. Check access conditions before automating
Prefer an official feed or documented API when it provides the data you need. Before scraping pages, review the site’s robots.txt instructions, terms of service, access requirements, and the possibility that pages expose personal or protected information. Do not bypass authentication, CAPTCHAs, technical restrictions, or an explicit denial of access.
Robots.txt is a crawler convention, not a technical security boundary or legal permission. Google explains: “The instructions in robots.txt files cannot enforce crawler behavior to your site; it’s up to the crawler to obey them.” A disallowed URL may still be discovered or indexed in some circumstances, so robots.txt is not a way for a site to hide content. Legal rules depend on jurisdiction, the site’s terms and access conditions, and the data involved. The U.S. General Services Administration’s 2021 guidance addresses U.S. civilian federal agencies; it is not a universal legal ruling. It flags issues such as terms where an account is required, sensitive information, and copyright. The EDPB’s Guidelines 03/2026 consultation page concerns scraping in the context of generative AI and lists a feedback period of 8 July–30 October 2026; it does not settle the legality of general e-commerce scraping. Get appropriate legal or organizational review where needed.
3. Collect conservatively and honor crawler rules
Use modest request rates, cache where appropriate, and back off when a site returns errors or signals that access should stop. Configure your crawler to obey robots.txt and verify that the setting is active. Scrapy documents this through its robots middleware and the ROBOTSTXT_OBEY setting; its middleware filters forbidden requests when enabled. 4. Save immutable observations
Store each collection as a dated snapshot rather than overwriting the prior value. Include the source, product key, timestamp, raw fields, normalized fields, and collection status. Record missing or failed observations as gaps; do not fill them with a previous value without clearly labeling that choice. A retained history helps distinguish a real price change from a parser change or a missed collection run.

5. Validate before interpreting
Check that expected fields are present and that values are plausible. Flag a sudden tenfold price jump, a currency change, a missing product identifier, or a large drop in parsed records for review. Product pages change markup, and a scraper can continue to return a response while extracting the wrong element. Keep a small review sample of source pages and compare it with extracted values after parser changes.
6. Normalize and analyze
Normalize currencies, availability categories, product identity, and time zones before comparing records. Useful outputs include price distributions and observed price changes, the frequency with which sampled products were marked unavailable, assortment counts, and the prevalence of selected attributes or keywords. Describe the collection cadence, sources, geography, matching method, and missingness with the chart or summary.

Those measures describe the pages and products in your sample. They become evidence for broader business outcomes only if your data and method actually support that inference.
How often should I scrape product prices?
Set the schedule to the decision the data supports, while respecting each site’s access conditions. A daily observation may suit a weekly competitor-price review; a slower cadence may be enough for assortment changes. There is no single frequency that is correct for every category or source.
- Use the same schedule across sources when comparisons depend on timing.
- Record the exact observation time and timezone, especially if prices or availability change during the day.
- Use caching and conservative request rates where appropriate; avoid repeated requests that add no useful observation.
- Back off on errors and stop rather than trying to defeat a site’s restrictions.
- Label missed runs. A gap is different from an unchanged value.
More frequent collection increases operational load and may increase access or compliance risk without making the signal more useful. Choose the least frequent schedule that answers the question reliably.
Should you build a scraper or use a hosted API?
A custom crawler gives your team control over implementation and storage, but also leaves you responsible for maintenance, scheduling, parsing, and recovery. A hosted scraping API can reduce infrastructure work but introduces vendor, coverage, data-processing, and cost dependencies. Scrapy.io documents tool discovery, synchronous calls, asynchronous batch runs, dataset retrieval, and schedules in its API documentation; that vendor documentation describes its workflow, not independent proof of extraction accuracy.

Compare options against your actual source set and fields. Check permitted coverage, extraction quality, geography, cadence, reliability, export formats, failure reporting, integration effort, retention, and pricing. Test with a small sample and manually verify extracted values before relying on a tool for trend reporting.

Troubleshooting common problems
Prices are missing or suddenly implausible
The page structure may have changed, a selector may now match the wrong element, or the displayed price may depend on a variant or location. Compare a saved page with the extracted record, verify the selector, and retain the raw value. Mark affected observations as suspect until corrected; do not silently patch historical values.

Availability appears to fluctuate unrealistically
Availability can vary by storefront, region, variant, or time. Capture the source context and exact page wording, then normalize only after checking what each label means. Do not interpret “unavailable” as a confirmed stockout across all sellers.
The crawler is blocked or receives repeated errors
Confirm the requested path is permitted by robots.txt and review the site’s terms and access conditions. Reduce request frequency and use backoff. If access is denied or requires bypassing a control, stop and seek an authorized data route rather than evading the restriction.
Trend charts have gaps or abrupt jumps
Check collection logs, timestamps, time zones, product matching, currency conversion, and parser versions. Distinguish a missing observation from a carried-forward value, and annotate genuine gaps. Recompute the chart only after documenting any normalization or parser correction.
Frequently asked questions
Can product-page scraping reveal what competitors sell?
It can track products and attributes visible on the sampled pages. It cannot establish a competitor’s complete catalog unless your source coverage supports that claim.
Do I need to save the page HTML?
Not necessarily. A dated record of the fields and source context may be enough for routine tracking; retaining page evidence can help investigate parser changes, subject to your storage, privacy, and access requirements.
