To find how much your crypto is worth in dollars, multiply the quantity you hold by a current USD price, then add the value of each holding. Treat the result as an estimate tied to its price source and refresh time. To estimate unrealized gain or loss, you also need a cost basis for the holdings and a complete transaction history.
Calculate your crypto portfolio value in USD
- List each asset and quantity. Identify assets by name or platform identifier as well as ticker; a ticker alone may be ambiguous. Include the holdings you want counted, including those in separate wallets or platforms.
- Choose a price source and quote currency. Retrieve a price explicitly in USD, and record the source and the time it was retrieved or refreshed. CoinGecko documents current and historical market data through its API and spreadsheet integrations.
- Calculate each position. Use
Position value (USD) = quantity held × current price (USD per unit). For example, if you hold 0.25 units and the selected data feed reports $40,000 per unit, the estimated position value is $10,000. This is an arithmetic example, not a current market quote. - Add the position values. Use
Total portfolio value (USD) = sum of each position value (USD). State which assets are included and show the price source and refresh time alongside the total.
Separate portfolio value from profit or loss
Portfolio value is what the listed holdings are worth at the selected prices. It is not, by itself, profit. A simple estimate of unrealized profit or loss is current position value − assigned cost basis. CoinGecko’s Excel tracker guide describes a holdings-value-minus-total-invested approach, but the cost-basis method and transaction treatment need to be defined for your own records.
A balance-only tracker can show a current value, but it cannot reliably reconstruct performance after buys, sells, fees, transfers, rewards, or partial disposals. Keep transaction details and historical prices if you need a record of how holdings and cost basis changed over time. CoinGecko’s historical Excel tracker guide includes transaction tracking in its workflow.
Choose a way to track prices
Spreadsheet with a data add-on or API
A spreadsheet is useful if you want to see and customize the calculations, combine assets, or keep your own transaction records. CoinGecko’s Google Sheets guide describes an official add-on and API workflow; its Excel guide describes an add-in and formulas. The Google Sheets guide warns that results may be cached and that more frequent refreshes can consume API call credits, so check the sheet’s refresh behavior rather than assuming a displayed price is live.

Exchange or platform portfolio feature
A built-in portfolio view can be convenient for assets already held on that platform. Coinbase says its investment performance feature tracks asset value changes and unrealized performance; see Coinbase Help: My investment performance. A platform view may not include holdings kept elsewhere, so it should not be treated as a complete multi-wallet total unless those holdings are included.
Custom API tracker
A custom tracker offers more control over supported assets and history, but you must handle asset identifiers, API credentials, rate limits, refresh timing, and missing prices. CoinGecko describes access to current and historical market data on its API page.

Check what the displayed total means
- Price and timing: Crypto prices can move quickly. A spreadsheet value is an estimate from a particular source at a particular retrieval time, not a guaranteed execution price; CoinGecko also notes that spreadsheet results can be cached in its Google Sheets guide.
- Coverage: A total may omit unsupported assets, wallets that were not imported, or fees and liabilities the tracker does not model. Make the inclusion rules visible.
- Profit calculation: Unrealized gain or loss depends on the cost basis and transaction history assigned to the remaining holdings. Coinbase’s calculation describes its own platform feature, not a universal accounting or tax formula.
- Taxes: An unrealized estimate is not a tax bill. Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and circumstances; the cited price-tracking guidance does not establish a jurisdiction-specific tax answer.
Compare trackers before relying on one
For any tracker, check whether it covers your assets and networks, quotes in USD, identifies its price source, displays a refresh time, supports transaction history or imports, and lets you export your data. Also check how it handles duplicate holdings, transfers, missing prices, and any API limits or fees. These criteria help reveal whether a displayed total is complete and current enough for your purpose.
