Use screenshots to document what Google showed for a specific query, location, language, device, and time—not to claim a universal or permanent ranking. Keep those conditions consistent between captures, record the results and visible search features, and treat any change as an observed difference rather than proof of its cause.
What a Google search screenshot can—and cannot—tell you
A screenshot is a dated record of one observed results page under particular conditions. Google says search relevance can involve a user’s location, language, and device, among other factors, and results can include different features depending on the query. A page observed in one Indian city, language, or device configuration is therefore not automatically “the India ranking.” Google’s guide to how Search works describes these context factors.
A capture can help you document whether a competitor’s page appeared, where it appeared in that captured page, and what else Google displayed. It cannot establish a location-independent position, guarantee that the same order will persist, explain why Google selected a result, or prove that a later difference was caused by an algorithm change or competitor action.

Build a repeatable screenshot workflow
1. Choose a fixed set of queries
List the exact searches that matter to your business. Preserve the spelling and language used in each query. Keep English, Hindi, and other language versions as separate entries; translations and transliterations are not interchangeable observations. Include the target market or intent in your own log if that helps explain why a query matters, but do not silently change the query between runs.

2. Set and record the observation conditions
For every capture, log the query, date and time, language or Search interface setting, device class, and location or localization method. Use the same settings in later comparisons. If you change the city or switch from desktop to mobile, start a distinct comparison series rather than treating it as a directly comparable capture. Google’s explanation of how Search works notes that location, language, and device can affect relevance.
In India, record language and location explicitly. A Hindi query and an English query should not be merged into one result history, and a city-specific observation should not be presented as a countrywide measurement. Google’s international-site guidance recommends making country and language versions explicit for site owners, including separate locale URLs and hreflang annotations where appropriate. It also warns that locale-adaptive pages may not all be crawled, indexed, or ranked. Those recommendations concern how websites expose locale versions; they do not certify that a manual setting or outside tool perfectly simulates a particular Indian city. See Managing multi-regional and multilingual sites and How Google crawls locale-adaptive pages.
3. Capture enough of the page to audit it
Save a full-page screenshot, or a sequence of screenshots if the results extend beyond one screen. Make sure the capture shows the query and enough of the results to identify the visible order and result types. Retain the original file and link it to a simple log entry with the observation conditions. This is a practical documentation method, not a Google-prescribed screenshot format.

4. Record observations, not inferred causes
For each capture, note the competitor domain and page that appeared, its observed order, and any relevant features visible in the page, such as local results, images, or videos. Search results are not necessarily a fixed set of ten ordinary links; Google notes that features vary with the query. Compare like with like, and record prominent features rather than reducing every page to an assumed list of ten blue links. See Google’s visual elements gallery.
5. Repeat on a schedule that fits the decision
Choose a cadence that suits why you are tracking—for example, a regular check for ongoing monitoring or a before-and-after capture around a planned site change. There is no universally established interval for this workflow. Keep the query and settings fixed, date every observation, and describe any movement as a difference between captures. A screenshot comparison alone does not establish what caused it.
How to interpret screenshots alongside other SEO data
Google Search Console: first-party data for your own site
Search Console is Google’s first-party source of information about the presence and performance of your own verified site in Search. Google recommends using it for key information and data directly from Search. It is not a complete competitor-ranking feed, so use it to understand your own site rather than to replace screenshots of competitor results.
Rank #3
Third-party rank trackers: useful observations, not Google’s internal ranking data
External rank trackers can help repeat checks at scale. However, Google states, “Third-party tools don’t have access to our internal ranking data.” Treat their competitor figures as estimates or tool observations, and check whether the tool exposes the location, language, and device settings behind each result. Do not treat a tool’s output as a canonical ranking or evidence that a specific change will improve visibility. Google’s guidance is in Google Search’s Guidance on Third-Party SEO Tools & Advice.

| Method | What it is useful for | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Google screenshot | Keeping an auditable record of a particular results page you observed. | Represents only the captured query and conditions at that time. |
| Google Search Console | First-party information about your own verified site’s Search presence and performance. | Not a complete competitor feed. |
| Third-party rank tracker | Repeating checks across queries or locations, depending on the product’s controls. | Does not have Google’s internal ranking data; outputs are estimates or tool observations. |
Before adopting a tracker, check whether it supports the Indian location and query language you need, separates desktop and mobile, and retains dated screenshots or exports with the settings used. Product controls, access, and pricing vary, so verify them with the provider.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Here is a one-request capture of a Google search URL; replace the example URL with the exact search URL and settings you want to observe. Get an API key and see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation before running it:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/search?q=best+accountant+in+delhi -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting inconsistent or unusable captures
The results appear to have shifted
First compare the log entries: query text, language, location method, device class, and capture time. If any differ, the pages are not a like-for-like comparison. If the conditions match, log the difference without attributing it to an update, competitor change, or other cause based on screenshots alone.
The screenshot omits results or important features
Capture the full page or save sequential screenshots, and check that the query and enough of the results are visible. Record local, image, video, and other prominent features; a changed result layout can make a simple position count misleading.
Best Value
A local or language version seems missing
Confirm that you are comparing the intended query language and location, and keep each language or city observation separate. For your own site, review Google’s guidance on explicit locale URLs and hreflang; locale-adaptive delivery can mean not all variants are crawled, indexed, or ranked. Meeting technical requirements and best practices does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page, as explained in Google Search Essentials.
A third-party number conflicts with your screenshot
Check whether the tool used the same query, geography, language, and device conditions, and note whether its output is a screenshot or a reported estimate. Neither a mismatch nor a single capture establishes which source represents a universal position; Google says third-party tools lack its internal ranking data.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my competitor’s Google ranking in India?
Search the exact query under recorded language, location, and device conditions, save a dated screenshot, and repeat with the same settings. Describe the result as the competitor’s observed position in that capture, not a single nationwide ranking.
Can I track Google search results with screenshots?
Yes. Screenshots provide a record of a particular results page at a particular time and under particular conditions. They do not reveal Google’s internal ranking data or explain why a result appeared.
