Google Docs and Sheets do not share one universal “Track Changes” feature. In Docs, use Suggesting to propose edits that can be accepted or rejected, and version history to review saved states. In Sheets, use version history for spreadsheet-wide revisions or Show edit history for a particular cell; cell history does not capture every kind of change.
Choose the right change-tracking tool

Google describes Sheets version history as a broad counterpart to Excel’s Track Changes for seeing who changed a spreadsheet and when; that is a task-level analogy, not a promise that the products track changes identically. Google’s overview of managing Docs and Sheets data provides the comparison.
Suggest and review edits in Google Docs
- Open the document on a computer.
- At the top right, select Editing, then choose Suggesting.
- Make the proposed change. Additions appear in a different color and deletions are crossed out.
- Review suggestions individually, or go to Tools > Review suggested edits to review them together and accept or reject all.
You need Commenter or Editor permission to suggest edits. If Suggesting is unavailable, ask the owner to grant one of those permissions. The owner can accept or reject suggestions. Google’s instructions for suggesting edits cover the review steps.
Suggesting is for proposed edits; it is not a substitute for version history, which lets you inspect saved earlier states. Google also says Microsoft Office tracked changes become suggestions when a file is imported into Google Docs editors, and Docs suggestions become tracked changes when converted to Office.

Find who edited selected text
Google Docs offers Show editors for selected text, but Google lists it only for Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and Education Plus. Do not assume it is available on every Google account or plan. Google’s version-history help lists this plan limitation.
Find what changed in a Docs or Sheets file
- Open the file on a computer.
- Select the Last edit / Version history control near the top right. In Sheets, you can also use File > Version history > See version history.
- Select an earlier version to inspect who updated the file and what changed. In Sheets, unmodified rows may be hidden; select Show unmodified rows if you need to compare them too.
- Use Back to return to the current file. To make an earlier state active, select Restore this version. To keep an earlier state separately, make a copy of that version instead.
You need editing permission to browse earlier versions. Google also documents version-history and restore options in its Sheets collaboration guidance.

Before restoring a spreadsheet
Restoring an earlier Sheets version clears cell-by-cell edit history for changes made before the restore. If you may need those details, make a copy of the earlier version rather than restoring it over the current spreadsheet.
See who changed a specific cell in Google Sheets
Right-click the cell and select Show edit history. This view is narrower than spreadsheet version history and is not exhaustive: Google says inserted or deleted rows and columns, formatting changes, formula-driven changes, and changes made before a prior-version restore may not appear. For broader context, inspect version history instead. These limitations are described in Google’s help for finding what changed in a file.

Get change notifications
Google Docs
Open Tools > Notification settings and choose notifications for added or removed content, or select none.
Google Sheets
Open Tools > Notification settings > Edit notifications. Choose whether to be notified about any changes or form submissions, then select immediate email or a daily digest.

Notification settings apply to the file. In Sheets, editors can see usernames of spreadsheet editors; viewers can set notifications but cannot see usernames. Google cautions that an email may not display all changes in a large file or when there are many edits, so check the file itself when you need to review changes. - Earlier versions: You need edit permission to browse version history.
- Docs selected-text editors: Show editors is limited to the Workspace editions listed above, according to Google’s current help page.
- Mobile: Google’s Android help directs users to open a document on a computer to see version history. The steps in this guide are therefore for computer use.

Troubleshooting change tracking
- Suggesting is missing: You may not have the required permission. Ask the owner for Commenter or Editor access.
- You cannot open earlier versions: Version-history browsing requires edit permission; request it from the owner.
- A Sheets cell’s history looks incomplete: Cell history does not include every structural, formatting, formula-driven, or pre-restore change. Check version history for a broader view.
- A notification email does not show a change: Emails may omit details for large files or many edits. Open the file and review its version history or relevant suggestions.
- Cell history disappeared after restoring a version: Restoring clears cell-level history for changes made before the restore. Make a copy of an earlier version first when preserving that detail matters.
- You cannot see who edited a Docs passage: Show editors is restricted to specific Workspace plans; version history is the broader option, subject to edit access.
