To trace a frontend performance issue, reproduce the exact slow load or interaction in the browser, record it in DevTools, then follow the timeline to see whether the delay comes from requests, JavaScript, layout, or rendering. Use Lighthouse to find broad audit leads; use a Performance recording to explain a specific event.

Start by making the problem reproducible

Turn “the page feels slow” into a repeatable test. Note the affected URL or route, browser, viewport, device class, exact steps, and whether the problem happens on a first visit or a repeat visit. For an interaction problem, record the precise click, scroll, typing, or menu-opening sequence.

Keep comparison runs consistent: use the same route and action, viewport, cache and storage state, and CPU and network settings. Otherwise, a changed test condition can look like a code improvement or regression.

Choose the right capture

For a slow page load

  1. Open Chrome DevTools and select Performance.
  2. Select Record and reload (or start recording and reload the page). Wait for the page to settle, then stop the recording if it does not stop automatically.
  3. Inspect the captured timeline, including network requests and main-thread activity, around the point when the page became usable or its largest visible content appeared.

For a slow interaction, scroll, or animation

  1. Open DevTools > Performance and start a recording.
  2. Perform the exact action that reproduces the issue, such as clicking the affected control or scrolling through the problematic area.
  3. Stop the recording and inspect the activity surrounding that action, including interaction timing, scripting, layout, and rendering.

Chrome documents page-load and runtime recordings as distinct workflows; capture the event that actually fails rather than relying on a page-load trace for an interaction problem. See Chrome DevTools Performance.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use Web Vitals as clues, not diagnoses

The Performance panel’s live metrics view can show local Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). Interact with the page to capture local Interaction to Next Paint (INP). These metrics describe what happened in that run; they do not, by themselves, explain why.

Use a trace to investigate the work behind the symptom. DevTools can also show Chrome UX Report (CrUX) field data when available, alongside the local result and its collection period and device category. Field data represents real users over the displayed period; a local recording represents the conditions of your particular test. They answer different questions, so a mismatch is useful context rather than proof that either result is wrong. See Chrome DevTools Performance.

Follow the timeline to the likely bottleneck

Late first content or a late largest element

Start with the Network track and request timing. Look for a slow document response, a long dependency chain, or a resource that begins loading late. Then inspect the relevant Performance Insights for document request latency, render-blocking requests, LCP breakdown, or LCP request discovery. Together, these clues help distinguish server response time, late resource discovery, and time spent rendering.

A slow click or other interaction

Use a runtime recording and locate the interaction in the interaction table and timeline. Check its timing breakdown and the main-thread work around it. Long scripting, layout, or rendering activity near the action can point toward work that delays the next visual response; use the trace to identify the task and then investigate the responsible code.

Unexpected movement

Inspect CLS and the layout-shift entry to see when a shift occurred and which element was affected. The layout-shift culprits insight can help narrow down the source. A CLS value signals movement, but the trace is what connects that movement to an element and moment.

Jank during scrolling or animation

Record the runtime behavior and inspect frame and CPU activity during the jank. Look for expensive JavaScript, repeated layout, or paint work. If the trace shows synchronous layout forced by script, the forced-reflow insight is a useful lead.

Repeat visits are still slow

Compare request and cache behavior between first and repeat visits. Performance Insights includes cache-lifetime findings, while Lighthouse’s storage-clearing option changes whether an audit models a first visit or a repeat visit. Make the storage choice explicit when comparing results.

Performance Insights can surface leads for CSS selector costs, duplicated or legacy JavaScript, font display, image delivery, DOM size, third parties, dependency trees, and other loading or rendering issues. Treat each finding as a direction for investigation, not proof that it is the cause in your case. Verify it against the trace and, where possible, the relevant source code. Choose the tool that answers your question

Tool Best use What it shows Important limitation
Chrome Performance panel Explaining a reproduced load or runtime symptom CPU and network activity over time, local Web Vitals, and trace-linked insights The recording reflects the tested device, browser, cache, and network conditions. Chrome documentation
Lighthouse A broad page-load audit and a shortlist of opportunities Audit metrics and potential optimizations, with mobile or desktop and throttling options Default simulated throttling estimates mobile conditions; it does not physically slow the browser. Lighthouse performance scoring
Network panel or Network track Finding slow, blocked, or dependent requests A request waterfall and timing details; requests in a trace can be opened in Network A delayed request alone may not explain time lost to main-thread work or rendering. Chrome documentation
Firefox DevTools Reproducing and inspecting a Firefox-specific issue Performance analysis of responsiveness, JavaScript, and layout; Network Monitor requests; and device or network behavior in Responsive Design Mode Browser implementations and data views differ, so confirm an issue in the browser where it occurs. Firefox Performance tool

Use Lighthouse without confusing the test conditions

Lighthouse is a useful starting point when you need a broad audit, but a score is not a root-cause explanation. Use a report to choose a lead, then inspect the related request, element, or trace evidence.

Choose first-visit or repeat-visit storage intentionally. Lighthouse can clear storage to model a first-time visit or retain it for a repeat visit. Its default simulated throttling extrapolates mobile performance; the advanced DevTools throttling option actually applies CPU and network limits and takes longer. These modes are not interchangeable, so state which one you used when comparing runs. See Lighthouse performance scoring.

Use the current Chrome insights location

Do not look for a separate Chrome “Performance insights” panel. Chrome’s documentation says that standalone panel was deprecated and removed starting with Chrome 132; its insights are available in the Insights tab of the Performance panel. Follow the current Performance panel documentation rather than older instructions for the removed panel.
