To stop repeatedly dragging and resizing windows, start with Windows’ built-in Snap: press Windows+Z, choose a layout, then use Snap Assist to fill the open spaces. If those preset arrangements do not fit a layout you use regularly, Microsoft PowerToys FancyZones lets you create custom zones.
Arrange windows with built-in Snap first
Windows Snap can place open apps in standard positions without manually sizing each one. In Windows 11, open the Snap flyout by hovering over a window’s maximize or restore button, or press Windows+Z. Choose a layout, then select other open windows in Snap Assist to fill its remaining positions. The layouts shown can vary with display size.
Use the keyboard or screen edges
- Press Windows+Left Arrow or Windows+Right Arrow to snap the active window to a side. Press an arrow again to cycle through available positions.
- Drag a window to a screen edge or corner to snap it into position.
- After placing windows side by side, drag the divider between them to resize the adjacent windows.
Bring an arranged group back
When you switch away from a snapped group, Windows can restore it through Snap Groups. Select the group from the taskbar, Task View, or the Alt+Tab switcher rather than arranging each window again.
When FancyZones is worth setting up
Snap is suited to quick, standard arrangements. If the available layouts do not match a recurring setup—such as keeping a narrow reference window beside a main work area—FancyZones adds custom zones. It is a window manager included with Microsoft PowerToys, a separate, free and open-source utility.

Create and use a FancyZones layout

Install and open PowerToys, then select FancyZones in PowerToys settings.

Open the layout editor from FancyZones settings. Choose Grid for a layout that divides the screen into zones, or Canvas for zones you can move and resize.

For Grid, split or merge zones to shape the arrangement. Its relative layout adjusts across different screen sizes. Canvas starts with one zone and allows zones to overlap.

To place a window, hold Shift while dragging it. Select the highlighted zone where you want it to go.

For quick switching, assign a layout hotkey in the editor and enable quick layout switching. Apply an assigned layout with Win+Ctrl+Alt+[number].
Optional keyboard snapping
FancyZones can intercept Windows Snap keyboard shortcuts. In FancyZones settings, turn on Override Windows Snap hotkeys if you want that behavior; the result of Windows+Arrow depends on the selected movement mode. Leave it off if you want to keep the standard Snap shortcuts.

Check monitor settings before spanning zones
FancyZones can span zones across multiple monitors only when all connected monitors use the same DPI scaling. Microsoft also warns that monitors with different orientations may produce unexpected effects. If your displays use different scaling or orientations, keep layouts within an individual monitor to avoid relying on a spanning arrangement.

Microsoft’s Snap instructions include Windows 10, but support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that means it no longer receives free updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. For the current support status and Snap steps, see Microsoft’s Snap Your Windows guide.

Choose the simplest layout that fits
Use Snap when its presets cover the arrangement you need; move to FancyZones when you repeatedly need a custom layout. Microsoft’s documentation describes the features, but does not establish a measured productivity advantage for either option.
