To tie a boat to a dock, prepare dock lines and fenders before you approach, then secure the boat with a cleat hitch and a line arrangement suited to a side tie or slip. Keep the lines snug without making them taut, and allow for wakes and changes in water level. Wondering how to tie up a boat in a slip? The key is controlling fore-and-aft movement while keeping the boat centered, not relying on one fixed knot or line layout.
Prepare before approaching the dock
Check wind, current, nearby traffic and the dock layout before maneuvering. NASBLA’s power-boating skills material treats arrival and securing as competencies that include accounting for wind, current and expected tides. Its March 2015 benchmark describes bringing a boat to a safe stop within 12 inches of a dock, slip, mooring, ramp or shoreline; that is a training benchmark, not a universal operating target or docking law. NASBLA power boating standards alignment (March 2015).
- Prepare bow and stern lines on the boat’s cleats and coil them so they are ready to handle.
- Position fenders between the hull and dock, especially at the boat’s widest point and likely contact areas.
- Approach slowly with the crew ready to handle lines. Do not use hands or feet to fend the boat off the dock.
How to tie up a boat alongside a dock
For a side tie, use a bow line led forward and a stern line led aft to limit movement along the dock. Add a breast line, led roughly perpendicular from a midship or suitable aft cleat to the dock, to help restrain movement away from it. A spring line can also limit fore-and-aft movement; its effect depends on how it is led.

How to tie a boat in a slip
A common slip setup uses two bow lines to the forward structure and two stern lines to the rear structure. Cross the lines where the layout allows: the opposing leads help control forward and backward movement and keep the boat centered. Marina geometry, cleat locations and the boat’s configuration may call for a different lead, so treat this as a starting arrangement rather than a universal rule.
How to tie a cleat hitch
A cleat hitch secures a line to a cleat. Its route goes around a horn and across the cleat in a figure eight, then finishes with a locking flip-under loop. Discover Boating’s step-by-step cleat hitch guide describes starting around the cleat base, taking a turn around a horn, crossing the center and forming the finishing half-hitch by flipping the line under the final loop. Its knot guide also describes reversing direction and flipping a loop over a horn to cinch the hitch. Follow one clear demonstration for the cleat orientation and exact finish rather than mixing variations.

- Lead the line around the cleat base, then take it around a horn.
- Cross the line over the cleat to make a figure-eight route around the horns.
- Form a small loop by turning the working part of the line under itself, then flip that loop over the last horn to lock the hitch.
- Pull the line snug and check that the hitch lies flat and holds when loaded.
Do not substitute a clove hitch on a dock cleat for a cleat hitch. Discover Boating warns that a clove hitch can come undone if pressure is not maintained or if the knot rotates, and advises against it for heavy-duty securing such as tying a boat to a dock.

Choose line length and leave room for movement
Line length depends on the boat, dock geometry, attachment points and conditions. BoatUS gives about two-thirds of the boat’s overall length as a general rule of thumb for ordinary dock lines and says spring lines should be considerably longer. This advice comes from its 2012 dock-lines guidance; it is not a fixed specification for every boat or mooring.

- Widely Used Applications: These dock lines serve not only for marine mooring, anchoring, or towing watercraft, but also for camping, securing loads, and outdoor tasks. They are suited for general utility tasks in workshops or during outdoor adventures
Set lines snugly, not under strain. They need enough length and slack to absorb shock from waves and wakes. In tidal areas, allow for the boat’s vertical movement as water levels change; lines that are too tight can load the boat’s cleats or dock pilings. Recheck the leads and slack after securing, especially if conditions or water level change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Side tie or slip: which arrangement fits?
| Docking situation | Typical lines | What they control |
|---|---|---|
| Side tie | Bow line led forward, stern line led aft, and a breast line; add or position a spring line as needed | Bow and stern lines limit fore-and-aft travel; a breast line helps limit movement away from the dock, while a spring line can help restrain fore-and-aft movement |
| Slip | Commonly two bow lines forward and two stern lines aft, crossed where possible | Controls forward and backward movement and helps keep the boat centered |
Neither arrangement is a one-size-fits-all prescription. Adapt line leads, length and slack to the boat, dock, wind, current, expected wakes and water-level changes.
