To check why people can’t hear you, first remove anything covering the iPhone’s openings, then record and play a Voice Memo while speaking toward the bottom of the phone. For speakerphone complaints, compare two Camera videos—one made with each camera selection. These checks help show where the symptom occurs, but Apple’s instructions do not identify a particular physical microphone as faulty.
Before testing: rule out an obstruction
Remove the case, screen protector, or film, and clear debris from the iPhone’s openings. Apple does not specify a cleaning tool in its guidance, so avoid inserting a probe or assuming a particular tool is appropriate. Retest after removing anything that might be blocking an opening.
Test ordinary phone or FaceTime calls
- Open the Voice Memos app.
- Record yourself speaking toward the bottom of the iPhone.
- Stop the recording and play it back. Apple says your voice should sound clear.
If the memo is unclear, that is a reason to continue troubleshooting or seek service—not enough on its own to conclude that a specific microphone component has failed.
Compare recordings for speakerphone problems
- Open Camera and record a video while speaking toward the top of the iPhone.
- Switch to the other camera selection and record a second video while speaking in the same way.
- Play both videos and compare how clearly your voice comes through.
Apple recommends this paired-video check for speakerphone complaints. A difference in clarity is useful comparative evidence, but Apple does not name which physical microphone each recording uses or map either result to a particular part.

If the problem happens in only one app
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Check that the affected app has microphone access enabled.
- If access is already enabled, or the app is not listed, contact the app developer.
A problem limited to a single app makes that app’s permission and developer support the relevant troubleshooting branch.
How to interpret mixed results
- Voice Memo is clear, but calls are not: The problem was not reproduced by the recording check. Apple’s instructions do not diagnose a carrier, call-routing, or physical-microphone cause from this difference.
- The two Camera videos sound different: You have a comparison that may help describe the speakerphone symptom, but it does not identify a specific microphone component.
- Only one app has trouble: Check that app’s microphone permission and contact its developer if needed.
- Audio remains unclear across calls, recordings, or app use: Apple says service may be needed. That result alone does not establish which part needs replacement.

If calls, recordings, or app audio remain unclear after checking for obstructions and following the relevant recording or permission steps, Apple advises that service may be needed. Its troubleshooting page is If the microphones on your iPhone aren’t working.
