To test web accessibility with Cypress, scan the rendered page or component with cypress-axe, then add Cypress assertions for the names, states, keyboard behavior, and outcomes your application requires. Run scans after tests reach meaningful interface states, and pair automated findings with manual evaluation: a clean scan does not prove a site is accessible or conforms to WCAG.
Choose how to run accessibility checks
There are two main scanning approaches in Cypress, plus ordinary test assertions that remain useful with either one.
| Approach | Where it runs | Best fit | What to account for |
|---|---|---|---|
cypress-axe |
In the Cypress test, against the current rendered page or component. | Teams that want open-source, test-level scans integrated into existing test code. | You choose when and where to scan and can scope checks to rules or criteria. Confirm setup and compatibility in the current Cypress documentation; the available source does not establish a current version compatibility matrix. |
| Cypress Accessibility | Cypress Cloud processes test-run data, including Test Replay data. | Teams using Cypress Cloud that want accessibility results associated with cloud test runs. | It is a paid Cypress Cloud option. Confirm current plan terms and the actual axe-core version/configuration for a run in Cypress’s documentation before relying on version-specific behavior. |
| Regular Cypress assertions | In the test code. | Checking product-specific expectations a generic rules engine cannot infer. | Assertions need to reflect the interface requirements and user tasks; a scanner does not know what a particular button’s intended accessible name should be. |
Cypress documents cypress-axe as a community plugin and Cypress Accessibility as a paid cloud option. The plugin injects axe-core and lets a test call checkA11y() on the state currently rendered in the browser. See Accessibility testing in Cypress.
Add an in-test scan with cypress-axe
Install and configure the plugin using its current package instructions, since exact versions and compatibility details are not established here. The basic flow is to visit or mount the target UI, let it reach the intended state, and invoke checkA11y().

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install and register: follow the current Cypress setup instructions for cypress-axe for your Cypress project and test type.
- Reach a meaningful state: visit the route or mount the component, then complete the interactions users need, such as opening a menu or submitting a form to reveal validation messages.
- Scan: call
cy.checkA11y()after the relevant UI has rendered. The scan evaluates that current state, not every route or state your application might show. - Review and fix: inspect violations, determine whether each applies to the user-facing interface, fix the underlying issue, and rerun the test.
A minimal test after the plugin is configured looks like this:
describe('home page accessibility', () => {
it('scans the rendered home page', () => {
cy.visit('/');
cy.checkA11y();
});
});
For a stateful interface, put the scan after the action that exposes the state:
it('scans the open navigation menu', () => {
cy.visit('/');
cy.get('[aria-expanded="false"]').click();
cy.get('[role="menu"]').should('be.visible');
cy.checkA11y();
});
Adapt selectors and expected behavior to your application. The examples illustrate where to scan; they do not imply that a particular selector or role is required for every menu.

Scan the states users actually encounter
An automated check only inspects the page or component state it evaluates. A route-level scan taken before a dialog opens will not check the dialog, and a form’s initial state will not reveal problems specific to its error messages or success state.
- Cover important routes and shared components, including dialogs, menus, tabs, expanded sections, and validation states.
- Perform the interactions that expose each state before calling the scan.
- For component tests, test the relevant component state rather than assuming a scan of the full page covers every component configuration.
- Keep test failures actionable by associating each scan with a specific route or state.
Cypress Accessibility can process captured test-run data, while cypress-axe checks run in test code. In either case, plan coverage around the states your tests reach; see Cypress’s testing guidance.
Understand the ruleset and scope
Do not read a passing result as “all WCAG rules passed.” Cypress Accessibility’s documented default ruleset includes axe-core WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 Level A/AA rules and Deque Best Practices. It excludes three WCAG-tagged rules by default: color-contrast, no-autoplay-audio, and meta-refresh. WCAG 2.2, AAA, experimental, and deprecated rule groups are off unless enabled. Deque Best Practices are recommendations, not WCAG success criteria. Check the current Cypress Accessibility rules documentation when configuring cloud scans.

With cypress-axe, you can scope checks to selected WCAG criteria and rules. Choose that scope intentionally: narrower checks can help target a test, but they also leave excluded issues outside that scan. Keep the scope and intended coverage visible to the team rather than treating a reduced rule set as comprehensive.
Pair scans with application-specific assertions
A rules engine cannot decide every product requirement. Add regular Cypress assertions for accessible names, state changes, keyboard behavior, focus handling, and task outcomes that matter in your interface. For example, a test can verify that a control has the expected accessible name and that keyboard interaction produces the intended result, in addition to running checkA11y().
Use your product’s requirements to decide what the name, state, and behavior should be; a generic scanner cannot infer that intent. Cypress recommends combining the chosen library’s coverage with manual testing and traditional assertions about expected behavior in its accessibility testing guidance.

Review findings and retain manual evaluation
Automated scans are useful for catching rule-based problems, but they cannot judge every issue that depends on context or a person’s experience. Cypress states: “Automated scans cannot prove an interface is accessible, so manual testing is still needed” in its accessibility testing overview.
Cypress’s accessibility automation principles says automation can catch up to 57% of issues that would appear in a manual audit. That is Cypress’s stated upper-bound figure, not a guarantee for a particular project and not evidence that an automated pass establishes conformance. Combine scans with manual checks suited to your interface and audience, including keyboard and assistive-technology evaluation where appropriate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cloud scan version considerations
Cypress Accessibility processes Cypress Cloud/Test Replay run data and uses an axe-core version. Cypress says it ordinarily adopts new axe-core versions at least 30 days after release, while allowing earlier updates for critical security patches. A cloud scan can therefore use a different axe-core version from one installed locally in a project. For a version-sensitive investigation, verify the version and configuration used for that run in the Cypress documentation; do not assume local and cloud results are identical.

Troubleshoot common accessibility-test problems
checkA11yis not recognized: the plugin setup or command registration may be missing or may not match your test setup. Recheck the current Cypress integration steps and confirm they are applied to the test type you are running.- The scan misses a problem in a dialog or menu: the test may be scanning before that state appears. Trigger the interaction, assert the state is visible or active, and then scan.
- A passing scan is mistaken for complete coverage: check which rules are enabled, which states your tests reach, and which manual or product-specific checks remain necessary.
- Local and Cypress Cloud findings differ: check the axe-core version and rules configuration used by each path; Cypress Accessibility may not adopt a newly released axe-core version immediately.
- A finding seems irrelevant or unclear: examine the specific rendered state and rule context, then decide whether the issue applies to the interface and fix or document it according to the team’s process. Do not suppress a finding simply to make a test pass.

For capturing a visual reference of a page during a separate review workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API. One GET request returns an image or PDF; it is not an accessibility scanner and does not replace Cypress accessibility tests.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
