To test a Supabase database backup, restore it into an isolated local Supabase database or a separate project, then verify its schema, data, permissions, row-level security (RLS), and important application queries. A successful restore command proves only that the restore completed; it does not prove that the database is usable or that Storage files and other Supabase services are recoverable.

Choose a safe restore target

For local inspection, Supabase documents restoring a downloaded backup with the Supabase CLI. First identify the backup image’s PostgreSQL version and configure the local database to use it. Supabase says local restore support starts at PostgreSQL 15.1.0.55; a backup from an older hosted version may not restore locally. The CLI-started database is for local development, not production use. Follow Supabase’s local restore guide for the current command and setup details.

A separate hosted project is an alternative when you need a hosted environment for checks. Supabase labels restore-to-new-project as beta, and it is a database-only restore rather than a complete copy of the original project. Review the copied and missing components, access controls, and possible side effects before choosing this route. See Supabase’s new-project restore guide.

Whichever target you use, treat restored production data as sensitive: restrict access, use controlled credentials, and avoid exposing secrets in logs or test output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Restore and confirm the database is queryable

  1. Choose a recovery point. Record which downloaded backup or recovery point you are testing. Supabase’s daily backup access is listed as 7 days for Pro, 14 days for Team, and up to 30 days for Enterprise in its current Database Backups guide. Plan terms and availability can change, so check the live documentation before relying on a retention window. If PITR is enabled, select a point within the configured recovery window; Supabase says PITR offers restore points with up-to-seconds granularity, and its feature page states a two-minute worst-case recovery point objective. That is Supabase’s published figure, not a guarantee for every project or incident. Supabase also says PITR replaces daily backups while it is active.
  2. Match the PostgreSQL version where required. For a local downloaded-backup restore, check the backup image’s version and set the local version accordingly, as described in the local restore instructions. Supabase says projects on PostgreSQL 15.8.1.079 and newer use its newer physical backup process; physical backups are enabled by default for eligible projects. Backup type can affect which restore and download paths are available.
  3. Run the restore using the chosen path. For local inspection, use the CLI workflow in Supabase’s local restore guide. For a hosted restore, use the documented project restore flow and plan for possible unavailability during restoration; downtime depends on database size. A new-project restore is beta and database-only.
  4. Connect and issue a basic query. After a local restore starts, connect with psql as shown in the local guide, or use your application’s database client. Confirm that a simple query succeeds before moving on to content checks.

Do not assume restore duration is fixed. Supabase says PITR restore time depends on the time since the last full backup, WAL activity, and database size; its PITR troubleshooting guide explains these variables.

Verify schema, data, and database behavior

Check the expected schema

Compare the restored database with a known schema baseline or the source database. Check for the tables and schemas your application needs, plus relevant views, procedures, indexes, roles, and permissions. Supabase’s new-project restore documentation lists database schema, tables, views, procedures, data, indexes, roles, and permissions among the database content copied.

Check representative data and relationships

Query records from important tables rather than relying only on table existence. Compare known row counts or application invariants where you have trustworthy reference values. Check key relationships and constraints—for example, whether records that should point to a parent still do so, and whether expected unique or foreign-key constraints are present. A query returning rows is useful evidence, but it does not establish that every table or relationship is intact.

Test permissions and RLS with realistic identities

Exercise access patterns using roles and user contexts that reflect the application. Verify that authorized operations succeed and that unauthorized reads or writes are blocked by the intended grants and RLS policies. Testing as an all-powerful database role alone can conceal application-facing access failures.

Run application queries and repeatable tests

Test important reads and writes through the same Supabase client and application paths your service uses. Supabase documents two approaches to automated database tests: use a Supabase client in the application’s language and framework, or run SQL tests through the Supabase CLI. See Supabase’s database testing guide. Keep the checks repeatable so the same suite can be run after future backup drills or schema changes.

Check what a database restore does not recover

A database restore and a full Supabase project recovery are different tests. Supabase says database backups include Storage metadata but not the underlying Storage API objects. If application recovery depends on files, separately verify that the referenced objects and bucket configuration are available.

A restore to a new project also requires manual reconfiguration of project-level components, including Storage objects and settings, Edge Functions, Auth settings and API keys, Realtime settings, extensions and database settings, and read replicas. Treat each required component as a separate recovery check rather than inferring it from successful database queries.

  • Custom-role passwords: Supabase says daily backups do not store passwords for custom roles. Reset those passwords after restoring, then verify the relevant connections.
  • Subscriptions and replication slots: When restoring a hosted project, subscriptions and replication slots may need to be dropped and recreated. Supabase says the Realtime slot is handled automatically.
  • External operations: Supabase warns that enabled extensions with external operations may start running after a new-project restore completes. Review cron jobs, webhooks, and wrappers before using that path as a safe test environment.
  • Logical backup availability: A downloaded backup can be restored locally for inspection. A logical export can also be made with the CLI or pg_dump, but Supabase notes that physical-backup/PITR configurations do not necessarily produce a downloadable logical backup file. See its logical backup download guidance.

Include Vault in the recovery test when needed

If the database uses encrypted Vault secrets or encrypted columns, verify that the restored data can still be read or decrypted without printing secret values. Supabase documents that same-project restores and its new-project restore feature preserve or copy the encryption root key. A manual pg_dump/pg_restore migration creates a new project with its own key; copy the old root key if the migrated encrypted data must remain readable. See Supabase Vault documentation.

Make the backup drill repeatable

Keep a short record for each drill so a future restore can be compared against a known result:

  • Backup or recovery point tested, and source and destination PostgreSQL versions.
  • Restore errors and elapsed time.
  • Schema, representative data, relationship, and application-query checks performed.
  • Roles, grants, and RLS access patterns tested.
  • Manual configuration or credential work still required for recovery.

Repeat the drill after material schema or backup-process changes. A passing test demonstrates only the database behaviors and recovery point you actually checked; it does not prove that every external service, file, or integration works. Supabase’s production checklist also covers backup and PITR planning.
