Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Set the browser viewport to explicit width and height in CSS pixels before navigating, then capture the visible viewport and compare it with a reviewed visual baseline. Also control device scale and any relevant mobile emulation. A fixed viewport makes the test repeatable, but it cannot by itself guarantee pixel-identical output across different browsers, operating systems, or rendering environments.
What a fixed viewport test should control
A viewport is the page’s visible area, expressed as a width and height in CSS pixels. Set both dimensions before loading the page under test. Keep related settings distinct: viewport size is not the same as screen dimensions, device scale factor, user agent, touch support, or mobile emulation. Playwright documents these as separate controls, and a preset device’s viewport can be overridden. See Playwright’s emulation guide.
- Viewport width and height: the layout area the page sees.
- Device scale factor: how CSS pixels map to device pixels and, when device scale is selected, the screenshot’s output dimensions.
- Mobile emulation: use mobile mode, touch, and a user agent when those conditions are part of the behavior being tested; changing viewport dimensions alone does not reproduce them.
- Capture scope: a viewport screenshot tests what is visible in that area; a full-page screenshot tests the scrollable document and is a different assertion.
Playwright’s Page API describes viewport and screenshot settings. Its screenshot scale can be set to CSS pixels (one output pixel per CSS pixel) or device pixels; device-pixel output can be larger on a high-density configuration.
Run a fixed-viewport visual regression test
- Choose the dimensions and rendering profile. Pick the CSS-pixel width and height that represent the layout you need to verify. If testing a mobile or high-density profile, define the matching device scale and relevant emulation settings as well.
- Apply settings before navigation. Configure the browser context or page before opening the target URL so the page renders at the intended viewport from its first load.
- Capture only what the test intends. Use a viewport capture for a fixed-viewport check. Enable full-page capture only when the complete scrollable page is the subject. Select CSS or device scale deliberately.
- Create and review a baseline. Playwright Test’s
toHaveScreenshot()creates a reference image on its first run; review it and commit it so later changes can be inspected. Subsequent runs compare captures with that baseline. See Playwright visual comparisons. - Set comparison tolerance to match the test. Playwright screenshot assertions provide difference-threshold controls and stylesheet options. Use a threshold appropriate to the change you want to catch, rather than treating an unexplained default as universally correct. The available assertion options are documented in the PageAssertions API.
- Reduce avoidable variation. Stabilize page state and hide or normalize genuinely dynamic content where appropriate. A supplied stylesheet can make captures more repeatable. During snapshot creation, Playwright’s visual comparison process takes screenshots repeatedly until two consecutive captures match.
- Keep baseline and comparison conditions consistent. Prefer running in the same environment used to create the baseline. Browser version, operating system, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering even when the viewport is unchanged.
Choose the right capture and comparison settings
| Decision | Use this when | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport dimensions | You need to verify a particular visible layout size. | Set explicit width and height in CSS pixels before navigation. |
| Device emulation and scale | The expected rendering depends on mobile behavior or high-density output. | Viewport, screen dimensions, device scale, user agent, touch, and mobile mode are separate controls. |
| Viewport versus full page | You are testing either the visible frame or the full scrollable document. | Full-page output covers a different area and should not be substituted for a viewport test. |
| CSS-pixel versus device-pixel screenshot | You need output dimensions corresponding to CSS layout or device density. | Device-pixel output may be larger; CSS scale produces one image pixel per CSS pixel. |
| Difference tolerance and styling | You need to balance sensitivity against known rendering variation. | Thresholds and stylesheet normalization should reflect the visual changes the test is intended to detect. |
| Browser and host environment | You need stable regression comparisons over time. | Operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect results. |
There is no universally correct viewport or visual-difference tolerance: choose them from the interface and regressions the test is meant to catch. Playwright recommends running comparisons in the same environment that generated the baseline.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Troubleshoot mismatched or unstable screenshots
- Layout differs despite setting a width: confirm both viewport dimensions are set, that they are applied before navigation, and that no device preset or later configuration overrides them.
- Mobile layout does not match a phone: check mobile mode, touch support, user agent, and device scale as well as viewport dimensions. These settings are not interchangeable.
- Image dimensions are larger than expected: check whether the capture uses device scale rather than CSS scale, and confirm the configured device scale factor.
- The screenshot includes content below the fold: disable full-page capture for a viewport-only assertion.
- Repeated runs differ without a code change: stabilize dynamic page content, use screenshot styling to normalize appropriate elements, and compare in the baseline’s browser and host environment.
- Small differences fail the test: review the baseline and tune the difference threshold to the intended sensitivity. Do not mask or loosen differences that the test is supposed to catch.
- The baseline changes unexpectedly: treat the first-run reference as a proposed baseline, review it before committing, and ensure later runs use the same rendering environment.
