Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To test a QA issue before it reaches production, reproduce the fix on a pull request or branch, let your CI platform deploy that change to a preview, and give QA the exact preview URL and commit to check. Then verify the reported steps on the deployed build and run a focused browser test for the affected flow. A preview makes the proposed change available for review before production; the available platform documentation does not quantify how much time this saves.
What a deploy preview lets QA test
A deploy preview is a deployed version of a proposed change that reviewers can open before it goes to production. It gives QA a testable build associated with a branch or pull request, rather than requiring every reviewer to run the application locally.
Netlify calls this a “Deploy Preview” and documents previews for connected pull or merge requests. Vercel calls these “Preview Deployments” and documents them for non-production branch pushes and supported pull requests. The precise triggers and access depend on your repository connection and project settings.
Set up a repeatable QA loop
- Open a focused pull request. Use a branch for the fix and link the QA issue in the pull request. Include the observed behavior, expected behavior, and concise reproduction steps.
- Wait for the deployment to finish. Use the deployment status in your hosting provider or CI. A Netlify preview URL may return Not Found while its initial deployment is still pending; wait for a successful deploy before sending the link. Later successful pushes update the preview content.
- Share the right URL and revision. Put the preview URL in the issue or review thread, along with the route QA should open and the commit being tested. If the branch URL follows its latest deployment, identify the commit so everyone knows which code the result applies to.
- Reproduce the issue manually. Follow the original steps on the preview before broad testing. Record whether the issue still occurs and any relevant browser, device, account, or test-data setup.
- Run focused automated checks. Add or run an end-to-end test for the affected flow. Start with the smallest useful check, then widen coverage if the change could affect neighboring behavior.
- Report the result beside the change. Record the tested URL or commit, steps, browser/device where relevant, and whether the issue is fixed or still reproducible.
Choose a URL that matches the review
Preview links do not all have the same semantics. Use the type that fits the question QA needs to answer.

| URL type | What it identifies | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Branch preview URL | Netlify documents that successful changes update the preview; Vercel documents branch-specific URLs that point to the latest branch changes. | QA should test the current state of an active branch. Include the commit under review because the target can move after another push. |
| Deploy-specific or commit-specific URL | Netlify documents a deploy permalink whose contents do not change after redeployment. Vercel documents commit-specific URLs for an exact deployment. | A reviewer needs a stable snapshot, or you need to preserve which build a test result refers to. |
Netlify says a preview remains available until deleted. Availability and access still depend on deployment state and project settings, so do not assume every URL is immediately ready or publicly reachable.
Keep preview access and configuration safe
- Check who can open the link. Netlify documents that preview URLs may be accessible to anyone with the link unless protected, and supports password protection. Vercel previews may also have Deployment Protection enabled. Confirm the actual project settings before sharing a URL or credentials.
- Use preview-specific configuration. Keep preview environment variable values separate from production values where supported. Netlify documents Deploy Preview context values, and Vercel documents environment-specific variables.
- Prefer non-production services and data. A frontend preview may not reproduce a defect that depends on backend code, secrets, data, or an external service. Configure safe test services and data for the environment rather than assuming the deployed frontend represents the whole system.
- Share only safe setup details. Include test-account or setup instructions when needed, but do not put passwords, tokens, or other secrets in a public issue or an unprotected preview link.
Run Playwright after a Vercel preview deploys
Vercel documents a GitHub Actions pattern that runs Playwright after a Preview Deployment. The essential sequence is to wait for deployment readiness, make its URL available to the test job, and run the browser checks against that URL. If Deployment Protection is enabled, configure Protection Bypass for Automation as described in Vercel’s testing guidance; otherwise the browser test may reach the protection screen instead of your application.

For a local or CI Playwright test that receives its target URL through an environment variable, a minimal test can look like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('QA issue is fixed on the preview', async ({ page }) => {
const baseURL = process.env.PREVIEW_URL;
if (!baseURL) throw new Error('Set PREVIEW_URL to the deployed preview URL');
await page.goto(new URL('/affected-route', baseURL).toString());
// Replace this assertion with the expected result for your issue.
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Expected page state' })).toBeVisible();
});
Run it after the preview is ready with PREVIEW_URL set to the deployment URL and npx playwright test. Replace the route and assertion with the actual reproduction and expected behavior. This test is an example of how to pass a deployed URL into Playwright; it is not a complete GitHub Actions workflow or a guarantee that deployment readiness and protection are configured automatically.

Capture a visual reference from the deployed page
A screenshot can help document what QA saw on a particular preview route, especially for a visual regression or a review thread. It is supporting evidence, not a replacement for clicking through and testing interactive behavior. For an immutable comparison, capture the deploy-specific URL rather than a branch URL that may later point to a newer build.
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can capture a preview page as an image or PDF; its screenshot is useful for visual inspection, while Playwright remains the better fit for assertions and interaction tests. The API also accepts options for full-page capture, CSS selectors, viewport and device settings, waits, custom CSS or JavaScript, and PDF output. See the ScreenshotNeo site and API documentation.

After you have the preview URL, request a screenshot directly. Replace the example URL with your actual preview deployment URL and use your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://your-preview-url.example/affected-route -o shot.webp
Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture; the service also removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, and those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Troubleshoot a preview that QA cannot test
- The preview returns Not Found or is incomplete: Check whether the initial deployment is still pending. Wait for success, then reload the preview; do not treat a pending URL as a failed fix.
- The link opens the wrong revision: A branch URL can follow later successful pushes. Compare the deployed commit with the pull request, or use a deploy-specific or commit-specific URL when an immutable build is needed.
- The page shows a login or protection screen: Check the project’s preview access settings. For automated Vercel tests with Deployment Protection enabled, configure Protection Bypass for Automation; do not expose bypass credentials in issue comments.
- The preview behaves differently from production: Check preview environment variables and dependencies. A frontend preview may not include the backend, data, secrets, or third-party service state required to reproduce the issue.
- Playwright cannot find the expected element: First open the same preview URL manually and confirm the route, test account, and expected state. Then check that the test waits for the relevant UI condition rather than assuming the page is ready immediately.
Compare preview workflows on practical criteria
Netlify and Vercel both document preview deployments for review and testing. Choose based on your repository and release workflow, not an assumed speed advantage: the documentation cited here does not provide comparative performance measurements.

| Decision point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Trigger and repository | Which branch or pull-request events create previews, and whether your Git provider and project configuration support them. |
| URL behavior | Whether the review URL follows the latest branch deployment and whether an immutable deploy- or commit-specific URL is available. |
| Feedback path | Whether reviewers can keep feedback connected to the pull request or issue tracker. Netlify describes feedback workflows connected to tools including GitHub, GitLab, and Jira; available integrations can depend on configuration and plan. |
| Access control | Whether previews are open to anyone with the URL, password protected, or restricted by team or deployment protection settings. |
| Environment isolation | Whether the platform lets you configure distinct preview variables and use test services or data separately from production. |
| Browser-test access | Whether CI can wait for deployment readiness, pass the deployment URL to the browser test, and authenticate safely if access protection is enabled. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a deploy preview change the production site?
A preview is intended for reviewing a proposed change before production. Confirm that your own build and deployment configuration targets the preview environment rather than production.
Can I use a screenshot instead of an end-to-end test?
No. A screenshot records appearance at a point in time; it does not establish that a user interaction or application flow works.
