Use Selenium WebDriver to exercise the application through a real browser, and use the application’s MongoDB driver or test helpers to arrange and verify database state. Selenium does not connect to MongoDB or replace database tests: the browser test checks what a user can see and do, while a separate component handles persisted data.
Separate browser behavior from database work
Selenium WebDriver drives a browser natively. It can open your application, enter data, click controls, and inspect the resulting page. It does not own the application’s MongoDB connection. The application itself—or test support code using the matching MongoDB driver—creates and reads database records.
WebDriver also is not a test runner: it does not compare expected and actual values, decide whether a test passes, or report results. Use a test framework for those responsibilities. This division follows the documented roles of the components; Selenium and MongoDB do not provide a single official integration recipe for this pattern. See Selenium WebDriver and Selenium components.
A maintainable test flow
- Arrange: Create the records the scenario needs through your application’s test fixtures or its language-specific MongoDB driver. Use a test database rather than production data.
- Start the browser: Create a WebDriver instance through the language binding selected for your test suite.
- Use the application UI: Navigate to the same page and perform the actions a user would take.
- Assert the visible outcome: Use the test framework to verify the rendered result, confirmation message, or updated view.
- Check persistence when it matters: If the requirement is that a write reached MongoDB, verify it separately with the application’s driver or a test API. A visible success message alone does not prove every database invariant.
- Clean up: Close the browser in teardown even when an assertion fails, and remove or isolate test data using the mechanism appropriate for your application.
The exact fixture, reset, transaction, and isolation strategy depends on the application’s language and architecture. There is no universal MongoDB reset procedure prescribed by Selenium.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up Selenium for your language and browser
Choose the Selenium language binding used by your test suite, a browser your application supports, and that browser’s compatible driver. Selenium’s getting-started guidance describes those basic requirements: Selenium getting started.
For Python specifically, the official API documentation labels its current version as Selenium 4.49.0, requires Python 3.10 or later, and describes Selenium Manager as the default browser and driver management mechanism on most supported platforms and browsers. It lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, WebKitGTK, and WPEWebKit support for that API documentation. Check the requirements for your chosen binding, operating system, browser, and CI image rather than assuming that every combination is available: Selenium Python API documentation.
In Python, install the binding in the environment used to run tests:

PyMongo is MongoDB’s official Python driver and its recommended way to work with MongoDB from Python. This only applies to Python; use the matching official driver for Java, JavaScript, or another application stack. See PyMongo documentation.
Python example: create a record, exercise the UI, verify it
This example shows the division of labor. Replace the example database, collection, application URL, and form selectors with values from your test environment. It assumes that the page has an input named name, a submit button, and a visible element with ID saved-name after a successful save. The Selenium part is runnable once those application-specific selectors and routes match your app.

The unique value prevents unrelated test records from matching the assertion. For stronger cleanup guarantees, put deletion in a cleanup callback or test-fixture teardown that still runs after assertion failures; the best mechanism depends on your test framework and fixture design. Do not use a shared database that other runs can modify concurrently unless each run has an isolation strategy.
Choose local execution or Selenium Grid
| Approach | Where the browser runs | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local WebDriver | On the machine running the test | Development and CI jobs where a browser can run alongside the test process | Simpler setup; the runner must have a compatible browser environment. |
| Selenium Grid or remote WebDriver | On remote browser nodes, potentially across machines | Remote execution or distributed parallel runs | Adds infrastructure and maintenance, but allows browser execution to be separated from the test runner. |
Selenium’s Python API documentation says local scripts do not need the Java server. Grid is the Selenium option to consider for remote execution and distributed parallel runs: Python API documentation and Selenium Grid documentation.

Choose a browser matrix from your users’ needs
Selenium supports multiple browser implementations, but that does not mean every project should test every browser. Base the matrix on the browsers your application claims to support, your users’ likely environments, compatible browser-driver combinations, and what your CI environment can run. Selenium’s supported browser list is a starting point; your application’s compatibility requirements set the actual matrix.

Know what the test proves
- Browser test: A user can complete a visible workflow and receive the expected rendered response in the tested browser and environment.
- Database assertion: A driver-level check can verify a persisted record or database-specific condition that the UI does not expose.
- Complementary tests: Keep direct unit, API, and database integration tests for cases that do not need a browser. Browser coverage is not a replacement for those checks.
Troubleshooting common failures
Browser or driver does not start
Check that the selected browser is installed and that the binding supports the browser and operating system in the environment. Current Selenium bindings use Selenium Manager for much driver and browser management; avoid assuming that a manual driver download is always required. If the environment blocks downloads or has a restricted browser installation, configure the browser and driver according to that binding’s current documentation.
The element cannot be found or clicked
Confirm that the page has finished rendering and that the selector matches the live DOM. Prefer explicit waits for the required state, such as visibility or clickability, over fixed sleeps. Check whether the element is inside an iframe, hidden behind an overlay, or rendered only after an earlier interaction.
The UI passes but the MongoDB assertion fails
Verify that the application and test helper use the same test database and collection, that the application has completed its asynchronous write before the query runs, and that the query matches the stored schema. A fixed delay is not a reliable substitute for waiting on an observable completion condition.

Tests interfere with each other
Use unique test data and ensure cleanup runs after failures. Parallel runs may need separate databases or another isolation scheme; deleting all records from a shared collection can remove another test’s data.
Local tests work but CI fails
Compare the CI image’s browser availability, browser-driver support, network access, environment variables, and application startup steps with local setup. If the runner cannot host a browser or you need remote/distributed execution, evaluate Grid or another remote WebDriver arrangement.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to capture a page image or PDF rather than test an interactive workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one GET request. Selenium is still the right tool for driving and asserting application behavior; a screenshot API is not a replacement for that interaction.
For example, save a screenshot of a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
