Playwright Test gives you an end-to-end test runner, assertions, browser automation, per-test isolation, parallel execution and debugging tools in one workflow. To test a modern web application, install Playwright in the project, write tests around user-visible behavior, choose browser projects that match your support commitments, and run the suite locally and in CI with deliberate controls for reliability.
Install Playwright and run a first test
Playwright Test is available for JavaScript and TypeScript projects. Its official installation guide describes adding the package and using the initializer to select a language, test directory and browser setup. Follow the package-manager instructions in the Playwright installation guide; the exact command depends on your project and package manager.
After installation, the initializer can install browser binaries and generate a starter test and configuration. Run the generated test with the project’s Playwright test command, commonly npx playwright test. Tests run headless by default. The runner supplies fixtures such as page to each test, opens the browser context, and handles teardown.
A minimal TypeScript test
This example assumes the application is already reachable at the URL you want to test:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page has the expected title', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveTitle(/Example Domain/);
});
Replace the URL and expected title with values for your app. toHaveTitle is a web-first assertion: it waits for the expected state instead of reading a value once and immediately comparing it. The runner’s page fixture is isolated for the test, so the test does not need to create or close its own page.
Write reliable tests with locators and assertions
Prefer locators that express how a user identifies an element, such as its accessible role, label or visible text. Use a test ID when the team deliberately wants a stable automation contract that is separate from the user-facing wording. Avoid selectors coupled to incidental DOM structure, such as long chains of nested elements: routine markup changes can break them without changing the user experience.
Prefer user-facing behavior
test('customer can submit a contact form', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/contact');
await page.getByRole('textbox', { name: 'Email address' })
.fill('person@example.com');
await page.getByRole('textbox', { name: 'Message' })
.fill('Please contact me.');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Send message' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('status'))
.toHaveText('Your message has been sent.');
});
Choose the roles, names and expected confirmation that actually exist in your application. These locators make the test exercise accessible, user-visible controls rather than an implementation detail.
Use explicit test IDs when that is the contract
await page.getByTestId('save-draft').click();
await expect(page.getByTestId('save-status')).toHaveText('Saved');
A test ID is useful when visible text changes frequently or an element has no meaningful user-facing label. Treat its name as a deliberate interface between the app and test suite, rather than adding it reflexively to every element.

Locators are central to Playwright’s auto-waiting and retry behavior. Before an action such as clicking, Playwright checks conditions including that the target is unique, visible, stable, able to receive events and enabled. Web-first assertions retry while the page reaches the expected state.

Prefer an assertion on the outcome over a fixed delay such as waitForTimeout(2000). A delay can be too short on a slow run and wastes time on a fast one. Auto-waiting does not correct unreliable test data, unpredictable application state, unstable network dependencies or interference between tests; those need to be addressed in the test and application design.
Manage setup and test data with fixtures
Playwright Test fixtures provide setup and teardown for resources a test requests. The built-in page fixture provides an isolated page; context gives access to the browser context, including its page and browser-level state. Tests receive only the fixtures they ask for, and Playwright prepares and tears them down around the test.
Use custom fixtures when setup is reused across tests—for example, establishing a known test account or preparing a test-specific resource. Keep fixture scope no broader than necessary: shared mutable state can make tests order-dependent, while setting up everything globally can obscure what a test requires. Keep test data predictable and make cleanup explicit where the fixture creates persistent data.

Choose browser and device projects intentionally
Playwright can run projects against Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, and can use branded Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge options as well as emulated mobile device settings. Projects let you define named combinations of browser, device, environment and other settings. Use the matrix to represent the environments your application promises to support rather than assuming one local browser is sufficient.
Example project matrix
In playwright.config.ts, projects can be based on the device descriptors included with Playwright. This example illustrates Chromium desktop plus emulated mobile coverage; add Firefox, WebKit or branded browser projects when they match your support needs.

import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
testDir: './tests',
projects: [
{
name: 'chromium',
use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'] },
},
{
name: 'mobile-chrome',
use: { ...devices['Pixel 7'] },
},
],
});
Confirm the device descriptor names available in the installed Playwright version. A project can also represent staging versus production configuration, or logged-in versus logged-out test state, when those differences are useful to exercise separately.
Balance coverage against runtime
Every additional project adds executions and therefore cost in time and compute. Start with the browser engines and device classes required by your product’s actual support commitments, then expand where compatibility risk justifies it. Playwright’s downloaded open-source Chromium is not the same as branded Google Chrome; choose a branded browser project if that specific browser is part of the requirement.
Playwright browser revisions are tied to Playwright releases. After upgrading the package, install the matching browser binaries again using the browser-install command documented for your environment. Do not assume an older cached browser binary is compatible with the new package.
Run and debug tests locally
Use the test runner’s project selection to focus a run, and choose a debugging mode based on the problem. The command forms below assume the package is available through npx:
npx playwright testruns the suite headless by default.npx playwright test --project=chromiumruns only the named project.npx playwright test --headedopens a visible browser, useful for observing behavior.npx playwright test --uiopens UI mode for interactive test selection and inspection.npx playwright show-reportopens the HTML report after a run.
UI mode and the Playwright Inspector help you step through a test and explore locators. The HTML report filters outcomes and shows test details. Check the official test-running guide for current options and command details.

Diagnose failures and flaky tests
Use traces for CI failures
Playwright recommends the trace viewer for investigating CI failures. A trace can show a timeline, DOM snapshots associated with actions and network requests, which helps distinguish a locator problem from unexpected page state or a failed dependency. Recording traces for every test can add performance and storage cost; the recommended CI pattern is to collect a trace on retry, then inspect it for failures.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For local debugging, enable tracing when needed or use UI mode and Inspector. Screenshots and video can help show what was visible, but they do not provide the same action-by-action timeline and DOM/network inspection available in a trace.
Common failure patterns
- Locator matches nothing or multiple elements: use a more specific accessible name or scope the locator to the relevant region; ensure the page is in the expected state before acting.
- Click times out: inspect whether the element is hidden, disabled, covered by an overlay or not stable. A trace or headed run can reveal the blocker.
- Assertion times out: verify the expected result is correct and that the application reaches it under test conditions. Check network requests and test data rather than increasing timeouts as the first response.
- Passes locally but fails in CI: inspect the trace, environment variables, application readiness and data isolation. Reproduce with the same project and avoid reliance on state left by another test.
- Tests fail after a Playwright update: install browser binaries that correspond to the updated package version.
- Tests are intermittently affected by parallel runs: identify shared mutable data or accounts. Isolate test records and reduce worker count while diagnosing.
Run Playwright in CI reproducibly
The basic CI sequence is to install Node dependencies from the lockfile, install Playwright’s browsers and required operating-system dependencies, then run the test command. Use the current Playwright CI guide for provider-specific workflow examples, since CI actions and provider details can change.
Start with conservative parallelism
Playwright recommends one worker in CI by default to favor stability and reproducibility. Once the suite behaves reliably and the runner has adequate resources, add workers deliberately or distribute work with sharding across CI jobs. More parallelism can shorten elapsed time, but it can also expose shared-data collisions and resource limits.
Keep useful artifacts
Configure CI to retain the HTML report and relevant traces when a run fails. A report makes outcomes easy to filter; a trace allows a developer to inspect the failing execution after the CI job ends. Align retention and collection settings with the storage and privacy requirements of your project.

Capture screenshots of a page as a separate task
Playwright is for automating and testing browser behavior. If you only need a screenshot artifact of a URL rather than an end-to-end test, ScreenshotNeo is a separate option: its website screenshot API and MCP server are at ScreenshotNeo. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, but it does not replace Playwright assertions, fixtures or browser-project coverage.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-call screenshot, provide an access key and target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
-o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Can Playwright test an application without a public URL?
Yes. Run the app in your local or CI environment and navigate to its reachable development or test URL; the test does not require a public production address.
Does a passing Chromium run prove the app works in Safari?
No. Playwright’s WebKit project is useful for engine coverage, but branded Safari is not the same browser binary. Include the environments your support commitments require.
Can I use Playwright for screenshots as well as end-to-end tests?
Yes, Playwright can capture screenshots within browser automation. For a standalone URL-to-image or PDF capture without building a test workflow, the ScreenshotNeo API is another option.
