Test a jQuery application at multiple levels: use QUnit for focused JavaScript and DOM behavior, isolate each test’s markup in QUnit’s #qunit-fixture, make asynchronous completion explicit, and run tests in real browsers whenever rendering, native browser behavior, or browser-specific APIs matter. Choose browser coverage from jQuery’s current support policy and your users’ needs—not from a one-time assumption that one passing browser proves compatibility.

Choose the right test level

Start by identifying what the behavior depends on. Small functions and decisions may be tested without rendering a full page. Code that selects elements, changes classes or attributes, or responds to events needs controlled DOM markup. Behavior that depends on actual rendering, layout, native events, or browser-specific APIs needs execution in real browsers.

  • Logic tests: Verify an input and its observable result without bringing in an entire page.
  • DOM tests: Provide the minimum markup needed to exercise jQuery selection, mutation, and event behavior.
  • Browser tests: Check behavior that a DOM simulation or non-browser runtime cannot establish, including rendering and browser-specific differences.

QUnit was developed for the jQuery project and is also usable for general JavaScript. Its API documentation describes support for Node.js, SpiderMonkey, and major browsers. That broad runtime support does not mean every test environment can verify browser rendering or native behavior.

Write a focused QUnit test

Group related behavior with QUnit.module() and define cases with QUnit.test(). A useful test sets up the inputs, performs the action, and asserts an outcome a user or another part of the application can observe.

QUnit.module("menu", () => {
  QUnit.test("clicking the button opens the menu", (assert) => {
    const button = $("#open-menu");
    const menu = $("#menu");

    button.trigger("click");
    assert.hasClass(menu[0], "is-open");
  });
});

This example assumes jQuery and QUnit are already loaded and that the test’s markup is available. It illustrates the test shape; it is not a complete runner configuration. Prefer asserting the resulting state, such as the menu becoming open, over checking incidental implementation details.

Test DOM behavior with isolated fixtures

In QUnit’s browser runner, put test markup inside #qunit-fixture. The runner documents resetting fixture markup after each test, which helps prevent DOM changes in one test from silently affecting the next.

  1. Place only the elements the behavior needs in the fixture, such as the menu button and menu.
  2. Run the action through the same kind of interaction your code handles, such as triggering the click event.
  3. Assert the resulting state, including relevant classes, attributes, text, or visibility.
  4. Keep each case independent; do not rely on another test having created or modified the markup.

A fixture reduces state leakage, but it does not automatically isolate every external dependency. If application code also reads global state, makes network requests, or depends on timers, provide explicit setup or controlled substitutes for those dependencies.

Make asynchronous completion explicit

Do not use arbitrary delays as a guess about when asynchronous work will finish. If the code under test returns a Promise, return that Promise from the QUnit test callback or use an async callback. QUnit documents automatic handling of returned thenables, so the test completes when the asynchronous work settles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For callback-based behavior, use QUnit’s asynchronous test controls to signal completion when the callback runs. Assert the result in that completion path, and ensure error paths also finish or fail the test rather than leaving it waiting indefinitely.

Run tests in real browsers when browser behavior matters

A Node environment or simulated DOM cannot establish that actual browser rendering, layout, native events, or browser APIs behave as expected. Add real-browser execution for those risks rather than treating a passing simulated test as proof of browser compatibility.

QUnit documents integrations including Web Test Runner, Karma, Testem, and WebdriverIO’s QUnit service, with approaches for local, headless, or cloud browser execution. These are options, not a guarantee that every integration is equally maintained or fits every project. Before adopting one, verify its current compatibility with your Node version, browser versions, build tools, and CI pipeline.

Choose a browser matrix that matches your users

Use the jQuery project’s live browser-support policy as an input, then account for your application’s audience, analytics, contractual requirements, and supported devices. The jQuery support page notes that application code can behave differently even in browsers where jQuery itself is tested; library support alone is not an application compatibility guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official support page uses moving ranges such as “Current” and prior releases, so a copied list can become stale. Check the policy when setting or revising a release matrix. Include mobile browsers when they matter to your users, and revisit the matrix when browser support or the application’s jQuery version changes.

Update legacy QUnit suites deliberately

When migrating from QUnit 1 to QUnit 2, the official migration guide maps older global calls such as module() and test() to QUnit.module() and QUnit.test(). Assertions move to the test callback’s assert object, and older setup and teardown patterns map to beforeEach and afterEach hooks. The guide also covers asynchronous patterns.

Review the migration guide against the suite’s actual usage. A blind search-and-replace can miss differences in setup, teardown, assertions, or asynchronous completion.

Keep the suite useful and maintainable

  • Run quick checks frequently: Keep focused logic and DOM tests easy to run during development; reserve broader browser coverage for the risks it addresses.
  • Choose fidelity intentionally: Use a lightweight runtime where it is sufficient, and real browsers where the environment itself affects the result.
  • Check integration fit: Confirm runner compatibility and reporting support in your existing CI rather than choosing by name alone.
  • Do not infer performance or maintenance status from a tool list: QUnit’s documentation describes integration choices, but does not establish comparative speed or current maintenance health for each third-party runner.

Troubleshooting common test failures

A test passes alone but fails in the full suite

Look for shared DOM or global state, and ensure each browser test uses the fixture for its markup. Check that asynchronous work finishes before the test ends and that setup and cleanup do not depend on test order.

A test hangs or finishes before the result is ready

For Promise-returning code, return the Promise or make the test callback async. For callback-style code, use QUnit’s async controls and signal completion from the callback instead of relying on a guessed delay.

A simulated-DOM test passes but users still see a browser bug

Run the behavior in a real browser. Rendering, layout, native events, and browser-specific APIs are not established by a simulated environment.

A legacy suite fails after a QUnit upgrade

Use the official migration guide to update globals, assertions, setup and teardown hooks, and asynchronous patterns. Check the actual API usage instead of changing names mechanically.

CI fails on a browser or runner version

Verify the runner’s current compatibility with the project’s Node, browser, and build-tool versions. Recheck the jQuery browser policy and your own required browser matrix; both can change over time.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a replacement for QUnit or browser tests. It can be useful when a jQuery project also needs captured page images—for example, to inspect a rendered page—without setting up a browser capture client. A single GET request returns a screenshot or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie and consent banners are accepted before capture, and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
