Use Playwright’s Electron API to launch the app, test sign-in through the UI when login is the feature under test, and assert an observable result such as the destination URL or a signed-in control. For other authenticated-feature tests, prepare and reuse authentication state instead of repeating login. Reliability depends on deliberately isolating Electron’s session, matching account reuse to server-side effects, and avoiding fixed waits. Playwright describes Electron automation as experimental, so validate the approach with your app, Playwright and Electron versions, and CI environment.
Launch the Electron app through Playwright
Playwright’s Electron API launches the application and exposes control of its main process and windows. The documented example launches an entry point, obtains the first window, interacts with it, and closes the app:
const { _electron: electron } = require('playwright');
const app = await electron.launch({ args: ['main.js'] });
const window = await app.firstWindow();
// Interact with the app's window here.
await app.close();
The documentation lists supported Electron versions as v12.2.0+, v13.4.0+, and v14+. Treat that as the documentation’s version-sensitive support statement, not a guarantee for every operating system, packaged build, or CI runner. Confirm the combination used by your project.
Test the login UI when login is the subject
A login test should cover the user-visible path: entering credentials, submitting, handling validation or authentication errors, and reaching the expected authenticated destination. Selectors, URLs, and error text must come from the application under test.

- Launch the app with a clean, deliberate test session.
- Assert the initial signed-out state before entering credentials.
- Fill the sign-in fields and submit the form.
- Wait for a meaningful outcome, such as the expected final URL or a visible signed-in control.
- Assert a stable marker for the authenticated state.
Playwright’s authentication guide demonstrates waiting for the final URL and also describes checking for a visible profile control. Prefer these observable outcomes to a fixed sleep: a delay does not establish that login succeeded and can be too short or needlessly long.
Cover rejected credentials separately
Submit invalid test credentials and assert the application’s expected validation or authentication error. Also check that protected content remains unavailable. The exact error and protection behavior are application-specific; choose assertions that verify the result rather than merely confirming that the submit button was clicked.
Check redirects and additional windows by their final state
If sign-in redirects or opens another window, observe the destination or relevant window and assert its resulting state. A successful click or submit event alone does not prove that the authentication flow completed.

Reuse authentication state for tests that are not about login
When a test targets an authenticated feature rather than the sign-in flow, repeatedly logging in through the UI can add work without improving coverage of that feature. Playwright documents preparing authentication in a setup project and reusing the resulting state. If the application offers a suitable authentication endpoint, the guide also describes API-based setup. Keep a UI login test when the login interface and redirects themselves need coverage.

| Approach | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| UI sign-in | Testing authentication behavior and the user’s login path | Exercises the UI, but repeats login work when used only to prepare other feature tests. |
| API or saved-state setup | Preparing an authenticated context for a test focused on another feature | Can reduce repeated login work, but that test does not validate the login UI. |
Choose the setup that matches the test’s purpose. Reused state is a starting condition, not evidence that the login interface still works.
Choose account reuse based on server-side effects
Playwright’s authentication guidance distinguishes between tests that can safely share an account and parallel tests that change shared server-side state:

| Account strategy | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One shared account | Tests that can run concurrently without changing shared server-side state | Simpler to manage, but unsuitable when concurrent tests interfere through mutations. |
| One account per parallel worker | Parallel tests that mutate shared server-side state | Reduces interference; requires provisioning and maintaining worker-specific accounts. |
Decide from what the tests do to server-side state, not simply from whether the tests run in parallel.
Isolate the Electron session deliberately
Electron’s session documentation explains that a BrowserWindow can use a Session or a partition. A partition prefixed with persist: is persistent and shared by app pages using that partition; a partition without that prefix is in-memory. This affects whether cookies and other session data can carry over.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Session choice | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent partition | Testing app behavior that intentionally persists across launches | Pages using the same partition share persistent session state, which can affect later test runs. |
| In-memory partition | Temporary session behavior and cleaner test isolation | State is temporary rather than retained as persistent app data. |
Give test sessions an intentional configuration and verify that the login window and the window where you assert the result use the expected session. Otherwise, an earlier run’s cookies can make a new test look signed in before it exercises login.

Account for where authentication tokens are stored
Playwright storage state covers cookies and local storage and can include IndexedDB. If the application stores authentication tokens in IndexedDB, the authentication guide recommends using the IndexedDB option when saving state. Session storage is not persisted automatically by the standard storage-state flow; Playwright’s guide provides a separate save-and-restore approach for it.
Identify the app’s actual token storage before choosing a state-reuse method. A saved state that omits the relevant storage will not reliably reproduce an authenticated session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect and refresh saved authentication state
Playwright warns that authentication-state files can contain cookies and headers that enable impersonation. Store them in a gitignored directory, not in committed source. Refresh the state when it expires, and use test output directories where run-local state files are appropriate.

Stub native dialogs instead of automating OS UI
Playwright cannot intercept Electron’s native dialog calls: they run in the main process and reach operating-system APIs. The Electron documentation’s approach is to stub methods such as dialog.showOpenDialog through electronApp.evaluate(). This keeps tests from depending on platform-level dialog UI when a flow invokes one.
Build a compact login test plan
- Successful login: Use valid test credentials, wait for the expected destination or authenticated UI, and assert a stable signed-in marker.
- Rejected login: Use invalid credentials, assert the expected error, and verify that protected content remains unavailable.
- Session reset: Start with a clean test session and prove the app is signed out before submitting credentials.
- Authenticated feature: Reuse prepared state only when login itself is outside the feature test’s purpose.
- Parallel execution: Use separate accounts when tests mutate shared server-side state.
- Redirect or secondary window: Observe the relevant destination or window and assert the final state, not merely that submission occurred.
These cases define useful test-design checks; the exact selectors, routes, messages, and account setup depend on the application. Playwright documents the automation, waiting, storage, and session mechanisms, but those mechanisms cannot determine the app’s expected login behavior for you.
Validate the setup against your environment
Playwright states, “Playwright has experimental support for Electron automation.” That makes version and environment validation part of using this technique: check the Electron support notes in the Electron API documentation, and run the flow against the app configuration and CI environment you actually use. The documentation’s supported-version list does not establish universal compatibility across platforms or packaged builds.
