Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTest CSS Grid layouts by capturing the same page or component at deliberate viewport widths, then comparing each result with a reviewed screenshot baseline. Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() provides a direct way to create and check those baselines. A screenshot can reveal a visual change; it cannot by itself tell you whether the cause is a CSS regression, changed content, or a rendering difference.
Choose Grid states and viewport widths that matter
A single desktop capture can miss the most consequential Grid changes: a column wrapping unexpectedly, a card spanning the wrong track, a gap changing at a breakpoint, or content forcing a track wider than intended. Build the test matrix from your own CSS breakpoints and supported device widths; there is no universal viewport list for every Grid layout.
- Cover responsive behavior: choose representative narrow, intermediate, and wide widths, especially around breakpoints where column counts, track sizes, or placement change.
- Cover meaningful content: use fixed test data that exercises the longest labels, images, or descriptions likely to affect intrinsic sizing and wrapping.
- Cover important interface states: capture relevant variants such as expanded navigation, populated results, or a selected theme when they affect the layout.
- Choose the capture scope: capture the Grid element to focus on component geometry, or the full page when surrounding flow and page height matter.
Keep the viewport height fixed as well as the width. A consistent viewport and page state make comparisons easier to interpret.
Set up a Playwright screenshot comparison
In an existing Playwright Test project, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() for a page or locator. The first run creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare the current capture with that reference. Playwright’s visual comparison guide and PageAssertions API document the assertion and its options.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start the application in the same way for local runs and CI, and prepare deterministic data for the page.
- Set the viewport explicitly before navigation or capture.
- Wait for the page state and assets that affect the layout, including fonts and images, to be ready.
- Capture the Grid component or page with
toHaveScreenshot(). - Review and commit the initial baseline. On later runs, inspect the visual diff before deciding whether a change is expected.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('product grid at tablet width', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 768, height: 900 });
await page.goto('/products');
const grid = page.locator('[data-testid="product-grid"]');
await expect(grid).toHaveScreenshot();
});
This illustrative test assumes the project serves /products and includes the indicated test ID; replace them with your route and selector. Fix the page’s data and state before capture so the screenshot tests layout rather than incidental content variation.
Generate and review the baseline
Run the test once to create the expected image, then inspect that image at the intended viewport before accepting it into version control. Treat the baseline as a reviewed test artifact: a newly generated image is not automatically correct. When an intentional design change updates the baseline, review the image diff and the related CSS or component change together.

Set comparison tolerance deliberately
Playwright exposes controls including maxDiffPixels, thresholds, full-page capture, and stylePath. Tune these to the project’s rendering and risk rather than copying a universal tolerance. A permissive threshold can hide a small but meaningful shift in a Grid boundary; an overly strict one can flag harmless rendering noise. See the PageAssertions API for the current options.
Make screenshot runs repeatable
Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Run baseline generation and comparisons in a consistent environment, particularly in CI, and avoid casually mixing screenshots produced by different environments. The Playwright visual comparison guide explains this source of variation and screenshot stabilization.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Keep the browser environment consistent: use the same browser and operating-system setup for baseline updates and comparison runs where possible.
- Stabilize the page: fix test data, ensure fonts and images load, and keep viewport dimensions and application state consistent.
- Neutralize volatile details selectively: Playwright’s
stylePathcan apply CSS during capture to hide or neutralize unstable content. Do not hide Grid items, containers, or other elements whose layout you are trying to verify. - Allow visual settling: Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for consecutive screenshots to match before comparison; this helps with transient rendering, but it does not replace deterministic content or a stable test environment.
For Grid regressions, inspect the diff alongside the DOM and computed CSS. A visual mismatch shows that pixels changed; it does not identify whether the cause is track sizing, intrinsic content, a breakpoint, loaded assets, or browser rendering.
Choose native Playwright or a hosted review workflow
For a project already using Playwright Test, native screenshot assertions are the most direct starting point: the test and its reference images fit the existing test workflow. Hosted tools may suit teams that want cloud comparison or a particular review process. Compare framework fit, baseline location, browser and viewport coverage, review experience, stability controls, CI integration, and usage requirements.

Troubleshoot unexpected diffs
- The whole Grid shifts or wraps differently: check that viewport width and height, content, fonts, browser version, and capture environment match the baseline. Then inspect the active media query and computed track definitions.
- Only text or image areas differ: confirm the same data and assets loaded in both runs. Different text length or intrinsic image dimensions can change Grid sizing even when the CSS is unchanged.
- Small noisy regions change between runs: look for animated or volatile content and neutralize only that content with a screenshot-only style. Do not mask the layout under test.
- A baseline changed after an environment update: compare browser and host setup before treating the image change as a CSS defect. Regenerate and accept baselines only after review in the intended environment.
- The comparison misses a real regression: revisit the tested widths, states, capture scope, and thresholds. Ensure the screenshot includes the tracks, gaps, and content whose behavior matters.
FAQ
Should I use a full-page screenshot or a locator screenshot?
Use a locator screenshot when the Grid component itself is the test target and you want a focused diff. Use a full-page capture when page flow or interactions between the Grid and surrounding content are part of the behavior being checked.
Does a passing screenshot comparison prove the Grid is correct?
No. It shows that the rendered capture matches its baseline within the configured comparison rules. It does not establish that the baseline represents the intended design or that untested widths and states behave correctly.
Can I compare screenshots from different machines?
You can compare them, but rendering differences may add noise. Keep the host and browser environment consistent for reliable baseline comparisons, especially between local development and CI.
