Test a command-line agent by running its actual executable as a separate process with missing and malformed arguments, then checking its exit status, standard output, standard error, and whether it performed any work. There is no universal “agent” command-line standard: define the program’s expected behavior first, and assert exact messages or status codes only when its documented interface promises them.
Decide what the command should do before testing it
Write down the command’s input contract: which positional arguments and options are required, which values and subcommands are allowed, whether extra positional values are accepted, and what help and success look like. Also decide what counts as an error and which output stream should contain diagnostics. These choices vary by program and framework.
As a general convention, zero means success and a nonzero status means an error, but the meaning of a particular nonzero value depends on the command and environment. Assert an exact code only if the target CLI documents it or your project deliberately defines it. See Click’s CLI documentation for this qualification.
Build a test matrix for the command’s input boundary
Cover more than one way an invocation can be incomplete or invalid. Adapt each case to the command’s documented interface; an “unexpected positional” test is appropriate only if extra operands are meant to be rejected.

Treat these as examples of one parser’s behavior, not a contract for every CLI.
Run the executable as a separate process
When the goal is to verify what a user sees at the command line, invoke the real executable rather than testing only an internal parsing function. In Python, subprocess.run() returns a CompletedProcess; its returncode holds the child process’s status. With capture_output=True, the result includes both streams, and text=True returns text rather than bytes. Pass arguments as a list so the test exercises argument boundaries directly; avoid shell=True unless shell behavior is itself under test.

Assert status, streams, and side effects separately
A process can fail with the wrong message, print a diagnostic to the wrong stream, or start work before reporting a parsing problem. Keep those checks distinct so the test reveals which part of the contract broke.
- Status: Check success or failure as the interface defines it. Do not assume every CLI uses the same code for invalid arguments.
- Standard error: Look for a useful diagnostic identifying the missing or invalid input. Avoid brittle whole-message matching unless exact wording is part of the contract.
- Standard output: Check whether normal output is absent or present as specified; do not treat stdout and stderr as interchangeable.
- Side effects: Use a harmless fixture, such as a temporary output directory or a stubbed downstream operation, and verify it remains untouched after rejected input.
Python’s argparse reference documents its own default: “Normally, when you pass an invalid argument list to the parse_args() method of an ArgumentParser, it will print a message to sys.stderr and exit with a status code of 2.” That statement applies to normal argparse behavior, not to command-line programs generally. Keep framework and test-runner status codes in their lane
Do not confuse the status code of the application under test with the status code of the tool running your tests. For example, pytest assigns its own codes for outcomes such as passing tests, failures, interruption, usage errors, and no tests collected. Those codes describe pytest’s run, not the CLI being tested. See pytest’s exit-code reference.
Likewise, GNU Coreutils’ test utility has rules specific to that utility, including treating each expression part as a separate argument. Its behavior is not a general CLI testing framework: GNU Coreutils test invocation.

Account for parser configuration and runtime support
Parser behavior can depend on its configuration and the supported runtime. In Python, argparse supports required=True for options, although required options are generally considered poor interface design because users expect options to be optional. A required positional argument or a sensible default may fit better, depending on the command. The exit_on_error setting, which lets callers handle certain parsing errors manually, was added in Python 3.9. Check the project’s supported Python versions before relying on it or asserting behavior that depends on it. The details are in the argparse reference.
