A backup is proven only when you restore it and confirm the recovered data and service work. Run a restore drill in an isolated, non-production environment: use the recovery procedure you would follow during an incident, measure the time to usable service, check how current the recovered data is, and compare both results with your recovery objectives.

What a restore drill needs to prove

A completed backup job shows that a backup operation ran; it does not establish that the data can be recovered or used. AWS identifies assuming that a backup is fully operational and recoverable as an anti-pattern in its Well-Architected reliability guidance.

Before testing, define two targets:

  • Recovery time objective (RTO): the maximum time the workload can be unavailable before recovery is considered too slow.
  • Recovery point objective (RPO): how much data loss, measured by the age of the recovered data, the organization can tolerate. NIST describes RPO in its storage infrastructure guidance.

Measure actual elapsed recovery time against the RTO, and compare the newest recovered record or file with the expected recovery point to assess RPO. AWS recommends periodic recovery tests that check backup integrity and recovery processes against both objectives in REL09-BP04.

Run a restore drill step by step

  1. Choose the workload and owner. Identify the system or data set, who is responsible for it, and the business impact of downtime. Agree on RTO and RPO before starting.
  2. Choose a recovery point and scenario. Record the specific backup or recovery point you will use. Select a scenario that matches a plausible recovery need: an individual file, point-in-time database recovery, a component, cross-region recovery, or a full system rebuild. Microsoft recommends testing multiple recovery scenarios, and AWS advises testing a component as well as the full architecture where appropriate. See Microsoft’s backup and recovery testing guidance and AWS backup and recovery guidance.
  3. Prepare a safe target. Restore to an isolated or non-production location so the drill cannot disrupt live service. Apply access controls and data-handling safeguards appropriate to the restored information. Microsoft’s guidance recommends non-production recovery testing.
  4. Use the incident runbook. Follow the documented recovery steps intended for an actual incident rather than improvising a special test-only shortcut. Agree on the timing start point and the end point that counts as usable service, then measure elapsed time between them. AWS recommends using established recovery processes.
  5. Validate the result. Check that required files or records are present, integrity checks pass, and the intended users or services can access the data. Exercise critical application functions; a restore job marked complete is not enough. Compare the newest recovered item with the expected recovery point.
  6. Compare results with objectives and record them. Decide whether the measured duration met the RTO and whether the recovered data met the RPO. Log errors, deviations, and follow-up work as well as successful checks.
  7. Clean up and remediate. Retain the evidence before removing temporary restored resources. Assign failures and gaps to an owner and track them to resolution. If using AWS Backup restore testing, account for its documented resource lifecycle: test resources are deleted after validation or when the validation window closes.

Choose a scope that tests the real recovery path

A drill can cover different amounts of a system. Match the scope to the risk and the recovery choices available in your environment; a file restore alone does not prove that a complete workload can be rebuilt.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Scenario What it exercises Useful checks
Individual file or item Recovery of a narrowly scoped object from a backup. Confirm the item is present, readable, and the expected version.
Database point-in-time recovery Recovery to a selected point in time. Check records, application access, and the age of the newest recovered data against RPO.
Component recovery Recovery of one component and its dependencies. Verify the component works with the services it relies on.
Cross-region recovery Recovery using a copy or recovery path in another region. Check access, dependencies, and time to usable service in the target region.
Full workload rebuild Recovery of the wider architecture rather than a single element. Validate critical end-to-end functions and measure the complete recovery time.

These are scenario examples, not a requirement to run every kind of test each time. Microsoft notes that test scope, frequency, and method may need to vary because a full recovery test can be difficult to perform for every exercise. AWS also recommends considering dependencies when choosing between a component test and a full-architecture recovery.

Keep evidence that makes the drill useful

Record enough detail for another operator to understand what was tested and what needs fixing. NIST calls for documented disaster-recovery plans and test procedures; Microsoft recommends documenting test outcomes. Neither source prescribes a single mandatory evidence template.

NIST SP 800-209, published in 2020, recommends: “Perform a periodic test restore to ensure that it is completed successfully and that it meets the required timeframe.” That is a useful standard for a drill: success means both a usable restore and recovery within the required time.

Include backup tests in ransomware recovery planning

Ransomware planning should account for whether backups are available and intact—not merely whether backup jobs ran. CISA’s StopRansomware Guide recommends offline, encrypted backups of critical data and regularly testing their availability and integrity in a disaster-recovery scenario. A restore drill should therefore validate that the intended recovery point is accessible and usable under the recovery conditions the organization is preparing for.

When managed restore testing can help

Some managed backup environments can automate parts of a drill. AWS Backup restore testing documents scheduled restore jobs, duration monitoring, optional validation, and support for particular resource types. Its applicability depends on supported resources and account constraints, so check the current provider documentation for the workload before relying on it. Automation can help run and observe a test; the drill still needs suitable objectives and checks that establish whether the recovered data and service are usable.

How often to test

Set a recurring schedule appropriate to the workload and its recovery requirements, and repeat tests after meaningful changes to data, architecture, or recovery procedures. The cited guidance supports periodic or regular testing, but it does not establish one universal interval for every system. NIST SP 1339, its OT Backup Quick Start Guide published June 17, 2026, specifically says effective operational-technology backup management includes creating backups regularly, testing them, and reviewing them during recovery exercises; that OT-specific guidance should not be treated as a frequency rule for all environments.
