These checks observe different things; choose one or combine them when the feature requires it.
Spy on the custom-property update
Cypress’s Root style recipe demonstrates changing a color input and checking the CSS variable update. Adapt the selector, token name and expected value to your app:

})The spy is installed before the input is changed, so it can observe the app’s call. This assertion establishes that the app called document.documentElement.style.setProperty() with the specified name and value. It does not by itself establish that the browser rendered the intended appearance.
If the property name is intentionally not part of the contract, Cypress’s recipe uses Cypress.sinon.match.string to match a string as the first argument while checking the selected color as the second. Prefer checking the exact token when the name itself matters.

Choose the assertion that matches the requirement

Check the rendered style
When the feature promises a visible effect, assert that effect on the element the user sees. For example, if changing a token should change a panel’s background, check that panel’s background-color after driving the control:

A raw custom-property value and a computed CSS property are not necessarily identical: computed output reflects the browser’s style resolution. Cypress’s visual testing guide also demonstrates CSS assertions and describes their limits.

Use a visual comparison for a whole-page requirement
A CSS assertion covers only the property and element you select. It can miss changes to layout, graphics, or other elements that together determine whether the page looks correct. If the acceptance criterion is the overall appearance, capture the app in the relevant state, compare the image with an approved baseline, and review intentional differences before accepting an updated baseline.
Make component tests render with the right styles
A component mounted outside the production app’s usual root may not receive its global styles, resets, imported stylesheets, or wrappers. Cypress recommends setting up component support or HTML so the relevant styles and startup context mirror the app. Where practical, reuse a shared setup module. Otherwise, an assertion can pass or fail against a render that does not represent the app users see.

Browser rendering is useful when the behavior depends on styles, layout, or interaction. A DOM-only or emulated render may not expose layout and overlap behavior the same way. Cypress’s component styling guidance covers loading app styles for component tests.
Troubleshoot failing assertions
- The spy records no call: Confirm the spy is attached to the same style object the app updates and is installed before the action. Check that the test triggers the event the app listens for; the documented recipe sets the input value and triggers
change. - The call happens, but the visual assertion fails: Check that the affected element consumes the token and that the assertion targets the property actually changed. A successful API call does not prove the resulting style or appearance.
- The computed value differs from the token string: The browser resolves styles when reporting computed output. Assert the relevant computed property in the form the browser exposes instead of assuming it must equal the custom-property value verbatim.
- A component test looks unlike the running app: Load the production-relevant global styles, resets, wrappers, and startup setup in component support or its HTML configuration.
- A CSS assertion passes but a visual defect remains: The test checks only the chosen property. Add a visual comparison if the requirement includes layout, graphics, or the combined page appearance.
