The second stage is essential: pseudolocales help expose engineering defects, but they cannot verify translation quality or guarantee every real translation will fit.
What localization testing needs to cover
Localization testing checks both whether the words communicate the intended meaning and whether the app remains usable in the target locale. A translation can be linguistically correct but clipped, placed in the wrong direction, or paired with incorrectly formatted dates or currency. A screen can also look polished while displaying an inaccurate or incomplete translation.
Start by listing supported language-and-region combinations, then identify the screens and flows where a defect would matter most. Include onboarding, account creation, navigation, forms, errors, notifications, and checkout or subscription flows if the app has them. Note which screens display dates, times, currencies, numbers, addresses, calendars, or measurement units.
Use pseudolocales before translations are ready
A pseudolocale replaces ordinary text with deliberately altered text so layout and resource problems become visible without waiting for completed translations. These tests are a screening pass, not a substitute for reviewing actual localized builds.

iOS and other Apple-platform apps
- Use Xcode localization debugging to make nonlocalized interface strings stand out; Xcode can display such strings in uppercase.
- Choose pseudolanguage configurations that stress longer text, bounded strings, accented characters, emoji-like content, and right-to-left direction. These variations help reveal clipping, insufficient space, and layout assumptions.
- Look for text embedded directly in code, images, or UI components rather than stored as localizable resources. A string that does not change during the pseudo pass may be hardcoded or otherwise outside the localization system.
Android
- Enable pseudolocales in a developer-oriented build. English (XA) adds accents, expansion, and brackets; AR (XB) simulates right-to-left direction.
- Check for hardcoded text, clipped or overflowing controls, strings assembled from separate pieces, bidirectional text problems, and layouts that fail to mirror appropriately.
- Use Android Studio’s locale previews for a quick layout check, then confirm results in an emulator or on a device.
Android describes a pseudolocale as “a locale that is designed to simulate characteristics of languages that cause UI, layout, and other translation-related problems when an app is translated.” Microsoft cautions that pseudolocalization can miss cases where an actual translation exceeds the generated expansion, so a passing pseudo test does not prove every translated string will fit.
Test the real localized build by language and region
- Choose a target locale. Set both the app language and the device or simulator language and region to the combination you intend to support. Language and region both matter: the same language can use different conventions for dates, numbers, currency, and other formatted data.
- Confirm resource selection. Check that the expected translation appears throughout the app. Where a locale is partially translated or unsupported, verify that fallback resources are present and that the fallback is understandable rather than blank or broken.
- Check representative screens and flows. Navigate through the high-value screens and complete the important tasks, including validation failures and error states. Check relevant screen sizes and densities; device display characteristics affect how text and controls appear.
- Inspect formatted values. Verify dates, times, time zones, number and decimal separators, currency, and measurement units against the selected locale and region. Do not assume a format that looks correct in an English-region build is appropriate elsewhere.
- Exercise directionality and mixed text. In RTL locales, inspect overall direction, navigation affordances, punctuation, numbers, and inline left-to-right content such as URLs or identifiers. A pseudo RTL pass can reveal layout issues, but review an actual RTL translation as well when available.
- Review meaning in context. Have someone qualified to assess the target language check labels with ambiguous source meanings, placeholders, plural forms, and strings whose wording or order depends on context. Correct rendering alone does not establish linguistic accuracy.
Android recommends testing on devices or emulators and ensuring required default resources are included. On Apple platforms, use Simulator or a device configured for the language and region you need to test; a region that changes formatted data is useful for locale-sensitive checks.

Keep localization defects reproducible
For each issue, record the app and build version, OS and device, locale and region, steps to reproduce, expected and observed behavior, and a screenshot. Classify the problem as linguistic, layout, resource-selection, or functional so it reaches the right owner.
On Apple platforms, Xcode UI tests can capture localized screenshots. Apple also documents metadata that maps string identifiers to screen frames, giving localizers context about where a string appears. For other workflows, use a consistent set of named locale-and-device configurations and attach screenshots to the defect report.

Common problems and what to check
- A string stays in the source language: Check whether it is hardcoded, embedded in an image, or missing from the relevant localized resources. Confirm that the build includes the resources you expect.
- Text clips or pushes other controls: Reproduce with the pseudo expansion pass and then with the actual translation. Review constraints, wrapping, and available space on the affected screen size; do not rely on the pseudo expansion amount to predict every translation.
- An RTL screen looks partly reversed or inconsistent: Check layout direction and mirroring, then inspect punctuation, numbers, and inline LTR text. Compare the pseudo RTL result with an actual RTL translation where possible.
- A date, amount, or unit looks wrong: Verify both the language and region settings and check the relevant formatting behavior, including time zone where applicable. A language-only setting may not exercise the regional convention you need.
- A translation appears missing or unexpectedly falls back: Check that the locale’s resource set is packaged and that default resources exist for fallback. Test a partially translated or unsupported locale if the app is expected to handle one.
- Separated words produce awkward grammar or order: Review strings assembled through concatenation and replace order-dependent fragments with complete translatable messages where appropriate. Ask a language reviewer to assess the result in context.
Choose the right level of test evidence
Previews and pseudolocales are useful for fast, repeatable checks, but they cannot establish linguistic correctness or reproduce every device condition. Emulators and simulators let teams test actual locale settings and workflows; representative physical devices add coverage for real display characteristics. Prioritize coverage according to the app’s supported locales, important flows, and devices rather than treating a single screenshot as proof of localization quality.
