Use Cypress component testing to check an Angular component’s rendering and interactions in a real browser; use Cypress end-to-end (E2E) testing to exercise a complete application flow. Install Cypress in your Angular project, open its setup wizard, and choose the mode that matches what you need to verify. For component tests, Cypress starts a development server to compile and serve the test—it does not visit your deployed production or staging app.
Choose component testing or E2E testing
| Question | Component testing | E2E testing |
|---|---|---|
| What is under test? | An individual component and its UI behavior in isolation. | A user journey through the running application. |
| What runs it? | Cypress mounts the component in a real browser and starts a development server to compile and serve the spec. | The application runs so Cypress can interact with it as a user would. |
| What does it help catch? | Rendering, interaction, input, and output behavior at the component level. | Problems involving connected parts of the app, routes, and a complete flow. |
| What is outside its scope? | Integrated routes, server behavior, and complete user journeys. | Fine-grained isolated component checks may be faster to diagnose separately. |
Use both where they provide distinct coverage. Cypress advises weighing the benefits of E2E coverage against possible disruption and flakiness, particularly when tests interact with external sites. See Cypress’s E2E testing guidance.
Install Cypress and open the setup wizard
Install Cypress as a development dependency from the Angular project root. The official install guide also provides equivalent commands for other package managers.
npm install cypress --save-dev
npx cypress open
On first launch, Cypress offers E2E Testing and Component Testing setup. Choose Component Testing to have Cypress detect and configure an Angular project, or choose E2E Testing to configure application-flow tests. Treat generated configuration as a starting point if your project has custom build settings. See the Cypress installation guide.

Configure Angular component testing
The documented Angular component setup pairs Angular with Webpack and requires @angular-devkit/build-angular, including for projects using @angular/build. A typical generated configuration includes a component development server and a spec pattern:
component: {
devServer: {
framework: 'angular',
bundler: 'webpack',
},
specPattern: '**/*.cy.ts',
}
Keep the wizard-generated configuration where it fits your project. If you override detected projectConfig, the override replaces the detected configuration; provide any app build options the component runner needs, such as styles, assets, or Sass include paths. A missing Sass include path can cause import errors. The Angular component-testing guide and component framework configuration guide describe the setup and runtime.
Mount an Angular component and test its behavior
Import mount from cypress/angular, then mount the component inside a Cypress test. This minimal example checks a counter after clicking an increment control; adapt the component import and selectors to your app.

import { mount } from 'cypress/angular'
import { StepperComponent } from './stepper.component'
describe('StepperComponent', () => {
it('increments the displayed count', () => {
mount(StepperComponent)
cy.get('[data-cy=increment]').click()
cy.get('[data-cy=counter]').should('have.text', '1')
})
})
Purpose-built selectors such as data-cy keep tests from depending on incidental styling classes or page copy. The Angular mount API documents the mount function and related options.
Test component inputs, outputs, and dependencies
Inputs
Pass input values as component properties in the mount configuration, then assert how the component renders or behaves. For example, if a component accepts a label property:
mount(StepperComponent, {
componentProperties: {
label: 'Items',
},
})
cy.contains('Items')
Output events
Pass an output spy in componentProperties, perform the user action, and assert the emitted value. Cypress documents createOutputSpy for this purpose; match the output name and expected payload to your component.

import { mount, createOutputSpy } from 'cypress/angular'
import { StepperComponent } from './stepper.component'
describe('StepperComponent', () => {
it('emits when incremented', () => {
mount(StepperComponent, {
componentProperties: {
countChange: createOutputSpy('countChange'),
},
})
cy.get('[data-cy=increment]').click()
cy.get('@countChange').should('have.been.called')
})
})
If the event carries a value, assert the spy’s arguments as well; the expected event name and payload depend on the component API.
Imports, declarations, providers, and standalone components
For a component that needs Angular dependencies, use the mount configuration’s imports, declarations, or providers as appropriate. Standalone components are often the simplest case and can frequently be mounted directly. Their dependencies belong in the test NgModule, so the module-level options do not apply to standalone components in the same way. Check the component’s actual dependency setup rather than copying a configuration from a different component.
Signals
Test signal-driven behavior by setting or observing component properties and asserting the resulting rendered effects. Cypress’s examples illustrate signal testing; align the test with the component’s Angular and Cypress versions. See the Angular examples.

Check Angular and Cypress version compatibility
Compatibility changes over time. In the Cypress documentation checked on October 3, 2026, the Angular component-testing overview listed Angular ^21.0.0 and ^22.0.0 support. It also said that Cypress 16 supports zoneless testing through the main cypress/angular harness without additional configuration or zone.js. Zoneless is the default in Angular 21 and 22.
The Cypress migration guide says Angular 18 and 19 have reached end of life for Cypress component testing, and Angular 20’s LTS ends in November 2026. Check the current Angular support overview before adopting component testing on an older or newer Angular release, and consult the Cypress migration guide when upgrading.

- Angular project detection or compilation fails: confirm the project has
@angular-devkit/build-angular, which Cypress lists as required for its Angular harness. - Sass imports fail: check whether the app relies on Sass include paths. If you replaced detected
projectConfig, add the needed paths and other relevant build options to your override. - Styles or assets are missing: inspect the component dev-server configuration and ensure your custom project configuration retains the styles and assets needed to build the component.
- A mount option has no effect on a standalone component: review how that component’s dependencies are registered; standalone dependencies belong in the test NgModule rather than being supplied as though it were a non-standalone component.
- A component test cannot validate a route or server response: that is outside the isolated component test’s purpose. Cover the integrated application journey with an E2E test.
