Test an RPC connection at two levels: confirm that the HTTP or HTTPS connection is working, then verify that the RPC request and response follow the service contract. A successful connection alone does not prove the method, payload, authentication, or result is correct. For HTTPS, keep certificate verification enabled and check that the certificate identifies the hostname you are calling.

What an RPC-over-HTTP/S test needs to verify

“HTTP/S” is informal shorthand for HTTP or HTTPS. HTTP carries requests and responses between a client and server; HTTPS uses TLS to protect that connection and authenticate the server. HTTPS normally uses TCP port 443. The HTTP Semantics standard, RFC 9110, describes HTTP as a client/server protocol, while RFC 2818 explains that an HTTPS client must check the server hostname against the identity in its certificate.

Layer What to verify Examples of a failure
HTTP or HTTPS connection URL, HTTP version, method and framing; TLS negotiation, certificate trust and hostname; connection timeout and reset behavior. Untrusted or expired certificate, hostname mismatch, unsupported TLS settings, or a server that cannot be reached.
RPC contract Method name, request shape, metadata or authorization, result or error semantics, deadlines, and applicable streaming behavior. Unknown method, invalid payload, missing metadata, denied permission, incorrect result, or incomplete stream.

Record enough information to distinguish these layers: the endpoint, HTTP version, method, headers or RPC metadata, request and response data, status, trailers when present, and timing. A transport-level success should not be treated as proof that the RPC operation succeeded.

Start with the service contract

For JSON-RPC

JSON-RPC 2.0 is transport agnostic: it defines RPC request and response messages without prescribing HTTP as the transport. The deployment determines how those messages are carried over HTTP or HTTPS, including which HTTP method, content type, status handling, authentication, and body encoding it expects.

Use the deployed JSON-RPC specification or API documentation to check request object fields, method names, parameter structure, and response IDs. Include tests for notifications, which do not request a response, and batch requests if the service supports them. Verify that successful responses have the expected result and that errors use the expected error object and semantics.

For gRPC

Use the service’s protobuf definition to identify services, methods, message types, and streaming patterns. A call needs the server address, selected service and method, payload, and any required metadata or authorization. gRPC uses HTTP/2; test the endpoint with a client that supports the protocol rather than assuming a generic HTTP request tool can exercise the RPC correctly.

  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS

Test each method pattern the service exposes: unary, client-streaming, server-streaming, and bidirectional streaming. A method’s existence does not imply that every pattern is in use.

Run a repeatable test workflow

  1. Pin the contract. Record the JSON-RPC specification or protobuf definition version. List methods, required and optional fields, authentication requirements, expected outcomes, and any streaming modes.
  2. Establish a known-good baseline. In a controlled environment, make one valid call. Capture the URL, HTTP version, method, headers or metadata, request, response or messages, status, trailers, and elapsed time. Save sanitized fixtures so a later run can be compared without retaining secrets.
  3. Verify HTTPS identity and policy. Leave certificate verification enabled. Check that the certificate chain is trusted, the certificate is within its validity period, and its subject alternative name (SAN) matches the hostname used for the call. Confirm the configured TLS protocol policy. If the service requires mutual TLS, also verify that the client presents an accepted certificate.
  4. Exercise valid RPC calls. Cover representative inputs, boundary values, optional fields, and each relevant authorization role. For streams, check message ordering and completion as well as the method’s application-level result.
  5. Exercise failures deliberately. Test malformed JSON or protobuf, unknown methods, missing metadata, invalid credentials, denied permissions, and deadlines that expire before completion. In an isolated environment, also test untrusted, expired, or hostname-mismatched certificates, unsupported TLS settings, an unavailable server, connection resets, and oversized messages.
  6. Test lifecycle behavior. For streaming calls, check cancellation, deadlines, message limits, and what happens after a client half-close or a connection reset. Verify that a failed or cancelled operation does not appear to have completed successfully.
  7. Compare plaintext and TLS only where permitted. If the implementation supports plaintext, compare it with TLS in a safe test environment. Check that the RPC behavior remains correct and that the TLS path enforces the required server identity and protection.
  8. Automate and retain evidence. Run the same cases from a reusable collection or command-line workflow. Keep sanitized request and response fixtures and record the exact client and server versions used for each run.

Test JSON-RPC over HTTP or HTTPS

Because JSON-RPC does not itself prescribe HTTP behavior, first determine the transport conventions your endpoint expects. Do not assume every JSON-RPC server accepts the same HTTP method, status codes, content type, or batch format.

  • Send a valid call and confirm the response ID corresponds to the request and the result has the expected structure.
  • Send a notification and verify the behavior required by the service; JSON-RPC notifications do not ask for a response.
  • If batches are supported, test multiple calls and check that each returned response can be matched to its request ID. Include a notification in a batch only if the deployment supports that case.
  • Try malformed JSON, invalid parameters, and an unknown method. Confirm the expected RPC error behavior and distinguish it from an HTTP-level error.
  • Repeat calls with missing, invalid, and valid authentication, checking both the transport response and the RPC outcome.

For HTTPS, use a client that validates certificates by default and inspect its connection diagnostics. Do not treat disabling certificate checks as a successful TLS test: it removes the identity check that protects against connecting to an impostor server.

Test a gRPC endpoint with TLS

Use a gRPC-capable client and the protobuf service definition. Postman’s gRPC client documentation describes certificate verification, server-name override, response-size limits, and connection timeouts as configurable controls. Keep verification enabled for a normal test. A server-name override can be useful when the address used to reach a service differs from the name the certificate is expected to identify, but the expected identity must be deliberate and consistent with the service configuration.

  • Confirm the client connects using HTTP/2 and that TLS negotiation succeeds for the endpoint’s policy.
  • Check that the requested server identity and the HTTP/2 :authority value are appropriate for the endpoint and certificate. gRPC interoperability test descriptions explicitly account for the TLS host and :authority; a successful network connection by itself does not prove those names are correct.
  • Invoke each method with valid and invalid payloads, and supply required metadata. Check the gRPC status and any response messages rather than relying only on a connected indicator.
  • For streaming methods, verify ordering, completion, cancellation, deadlines, message-size limits, and behavior after a half-close or reset.
  • Where the client exposes them, inspect response headers and trailers as well as the message body and final status.

For repeatable interoperability checks, command-line clients such as grpcurl can invoke methods using a service definition; reflection may also be available on some servers. If the server does not expose reflection, provide the appropriate protobuf definition rather than assuming the client can discover the contract.

Diagnose failures by layer

TLS or certificate failure

If the connection fails before the RPC method runs, inspect the certificate chain, validity period, hostname/SAN match, trust configuration, and negotiated TLS policy. For mutual TLS, confirm that the client certificate is present and accepted. Do not “fix” a hostname or trust error by permanently disabling certificate verification; correct the endpoint name or trust setup.

Connection succeeds but the RPC fails

Check the service and method name, payload shape, required metadata, credentials, permissions, and status or error semantics. For JSON-RPC, compare the request and response IDs and inspect the error object. For gRPC, inspect the final RPC status and trailers as well as any messages already received.

Streaming call hangs or ends unexpectedly

Check the deadline, cancellation behavior, message limits, and whether the client or server has half-closed the stream. Capture the point at which messages stop and whether the call ended with a status, reset, or timeout; a partial stream is not necessarily a completed operation.
