Set the browser’s responsive viewport to 360 CSS pixels wide, keep the page state and capture settings consistent, then inspect the screenshot for overflow, clipping, hard-to-read headlines and obstructed controls. A 360-pixel viewport is a test setting—not a claim about the physical resolution or popularity of Indian phones.
Set up a 360 CSS-pixel viewport in Chrome
- Open the Indian news page in Chrome, then open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode and select Responsive dimensions.
- Enter 360 for the width. Set a height appropriate to the test brief and record it so subsequent captures use the same dimensions.
- If the comparison depends on emulated device type or device pixel ratio (DPR), set and record those too. The viewport width is in CSS pixels; DPR affects the mapping between CSS pixels and screen pixels.
- Wait for the same page state each time. Keep the scroll position consistent and note whether menus, advertisements, consent banners or subscription prompts are visible.
Chrome’s documented device presets include 320px, 375px and 425px widths; these are preset choices, not evidence that any width represents Indian phone usage. Enter 360px directly for this test. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation for responsive dimensions, DPR and breakpoint inspection.
Choose the right screenshot mode
In DevTools, open More options > Capture screenshot to capture the currently visible viewport. Choose Capture a full size screenshot when the test needs to show content below the fold. These captures answer different questions; do not compare a viewport-only image with a full-page image as if they were equivalent.
Inspect the image at its native dimensions. A scaled-down preview can conceal text and spacing problems. Record the capture mode and scroll position with the result.

What to inspect on a narrow news page
- Horizontal overflow: Look for content extending beyond the viewport or a page that can be scrolled sideways unexpectedly.
- Headlines and labels: Check whether headlines remain legible rather than being clipped, crowded or compressed into awkward shapes.
- Navigation and controls: Confirm that navigation can be reached and that buttons, menu triggers and other controls are not obscured or overlapping.
- Images and video: Check that media fits the content width instead of spilling into adjacent content or beyond the screen.
- Overlays: Note whether consent banners, ads, newsletter prompts or subscription overlays cover the story or controls.
- Below-the-fold content: If the issue appears farther down the page, use a full-page capture or repeat viewport captures at recorded scroll positions.
These are checks to apply, not findings about a particular publisher: no named Indian news site was inspected for this guide.
Compare nearby widths to find a breakpoint issue
If the layout changes abruptly or a defect appears only around 360px, inspect the page at nearby widths. Chrome DevTools can show media-query breakpoints and lets you select a width between breakpoints. Change one width at a time and keep height, DPR, device type, browser, page state and screenshot mode fixed. Note which settings differ before attributing a visual change to the site.

Check viewport metadata when the layout looks wrong
A screenshot alone cannot tell you whether the page has suitable viewport metadata. Inspect the document’s head or run Lighthouse’s viewport audit. The audit’s passing condition includes a viewport meta element whose content attribute contains a width= declaration. See Chrome’s Lighthouse viewport audit documentation.

For useful baseline comparisons, keep the browser and version, viewport width and height, device settings, page state and screenshot mode consistent. A changed headline, rotating ad or timestamp can alter pixels without indicating a responsive-layout regression, so review visual differences in context.
Know what desktop emulation cannot establish
DevTools emulation is useful for checking responsive layout, but it does not certify behavior on actual hardware. Chrome for Developers describes Device Mode as “a first-order approximation of how your page looks and feels on a mobile device” and advises that “When in doubt, your best bet is to actually run your page on a mobile device.” Test on a physical phone when the result depends on touch, browser chrome, performance or hardware behavior. Use a phone you already have if possible.

Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
- The page does not look like a 360px layout: Verify that Device Mode is on, Responsive dimensions are selected and the width field reads 360 CSS pixels. Check viewport metadata if the layout still behaves unexpectedly.
- Two captures are difficult to compare: Match width, height, DPR, emulated device type, browser/version, capture mode, scroll position and visible page state. Record any setting that differs.
- The screenshot cuts off content you need to assess: Use More options > Capture full size screenshot for below-the-fold evidence, or capture a viewport at the relevant scroll position.
- A visual-diff test reports changes that may not be layout defects: Check for changing news content, timestamps, rotating ads and other dynamic elements before treating the difference as a regression.
- The screenshot looks fine but a real phone behaves differently: Confirm on physical hardware when touch, browser chrome, performance or device-specific behavior matters.

Does a 360px screenshot prove the page works on Indian phones?
No. It documents one emulated rendering state. Test on a physical phone when behavior depends on hardware, touch or browser chrome.
