Use Chrome DevTools Device Mode to test an Indian food-delivery website at narrow and common phone widths, then walk through the ordering flow at each size. Include a 320 CSS-pixel reflow check and verify important interactions on a real phone before release: emulation is useful, but it does not reproduce every mobile browser or hardware behavior.
Set up a repeatable viewport test
- Open the website in Chrome and open DevTools. Select the device toolbar to enter Device Mode.
- Choose Responsive mode and enter a width and height, or choose a device preset. Use the same dimensions for each run so results are comparable.
- Start with a 320 CSS-pixel-wide viewport, a compact-phone width, and a larger-phone width. Add a tablet width if the site changes its navigation or columns at that range. These are coverage choices, not claims about device market share.
- Test portrait and landscape orientation. Use DevTools’ media-query breakpoint display to find where layouts change; test just below and above each relevant breakpoint.

Check reflow and readability at every size
At each chosen width, inspect the restaurant listing, restaurant details, menu, item options, cart, and checkout screens. Check that text is readable, prices and controls remain visible, and notices do not cover primary actions. Look for clipped content, overlapping elements, unexpectedly hidden controls, and unintended horizontal scrolling.
At 320 CSS pixels, check that content reflows without loss of information or functionality. The WCAG reflow criterion has a limited exception where two-dimensional layout is essential to meaning or use. GIGW reproduces this threshold in its accessibility guidance; the consulted page does not display a publication year.

Walk through the complete ordering journey
A static screenshot can show a layout problem, but it cannot establish that the ordering controls work. At each viewport, follow the flow the site actually provides:
- Find a restaurant or open a menu.
- Open a menu item and select options or modifiers if offered.
- Add the item to the cart, then open and review the cart.
- Continue through delivery details and checkout as far as the test environment allows.
- Where the site offers them, open help, support, or complaint paths and check that their controls remain accessible.
Watch for sticky bars, drawers, dialogs, validation messages, and the on-screen keyboard obscuring the next control. Sites differ, so treat these as test cases rather than assumptions about a standard Indian delivery interface.
Test touch, orientation, and constrained conditions
Enable touch interaction in Device Mode and try the primary controls rather than relying only on a mouse. Rotate the viewport and repeat key steps, especially where menus or cart controls move in landscape. Use DevTools CPU and network throttling to observe loading states and layout shifts under slower conditions. These settings help expose issues; they do not guarantee the same performance as a physical phone.

Use Indian guidance in the right scope
The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and apps (GIGW) recommend responsive design and testing across devices. Their stated scope is government websites and apps; they are a useful local reference, not evidence that the same requirements are legally binding on private food-delivery websites.
India’s FSSAI Food Safety Connect portal accepts consumer complaints about online aggregators and food-delivery platforms. If the site has a support or complaint journey, testing it is a reasonable part of coverage. The portal’s existence does not establish a required site design or show that any specific platform complies.

Confirm critical behavior on a real phone
Before relying on a release, open the important pages on an available phone and browser. Prioritize touch behavior, the on-screen keyboard, location-related behavior, and browser-specific rendering. Emulation cannot reproduce every mobile browser API, CSS support difference, or device behavior; Chrome recommends real-device checks when certainty matters.
Make selected checks repeatable with Playwright
For regression coverage, Playwright supports device configurations and explicit viewport settings. Use it to repeat selected layout and interaction checks, while keeping visual review and real-device validation in the process. Common test failures and what to check
- Horizontal scrolling at 320 CSS pixels: Find the element wider than the viewport, such as a fixed-width panel or oversized image, and inspect whether it can reflow. Preserve two-dimensional layouts only when their meaning or use requires them.
- A control is visible but cannot be tapped: Try it with touch enabled, check whether an overlay or sticky element intercepts it, and verify again on a phone.
- The cart or checkout action is hidden: Repeat the step with the on-screen keyboard open and with dialogs or validation messages visible; check whether the next action is covered or pushed out of view.
- A layout breaks only near one width: Use the media-query display to identify the breakpoint, then test immediately above and below it for clipping, abrupt wrapping, or inaccessible navigation.
- A throttled run looks different from a fast run: Inspect loading states and layout shifts under constrained CPU or network settings, then compare with a real device; emulation is not a hardware performance guarantee.
- Automation passes but a phone behaves differently: Treat the automated check as coverage for its configured viewport and browser, not every browser engine, operating system, or device interaction.
