Test across a deliberate set of compact, medium, and expanded layouts—not just one phone and one tablet—and verify both appearance and behavior. Combine previews or emulators for fast iteration, automated UI and screenshot tests for repeatable checks, task-based manual testing, accessibility settings, and selected physical devices where hardware behavior matters. No single preset guarantees that an app works on every device.

Build a screen-size test matrix around your users

Start with the platforms and configurations your app claims to support, then choose representative available display space rather than relying only on device names. A useful matrix covers the layout classes and conditions that could change how users see or operate the app.

  • Available width: compact phone, larger phone, and tablet or expanded window.
  • Shape and orientation: relevant aspect ratios in portrait and landscape, plus foldable or multi-window states if supported.
  • Content and interaction: long content, empty states, forms, navigation, and overlays; include touch, keyboard, mouse, or external input where the app supports them.
  • Display and accessibility: relevant pixel densities, enlarged text, and platform accessibility settings and assistive technologies.
  • State changes: rotation, resizing, or moving between displays, with checks that important user and navigation state survives.

For Android, official guidance recommends testing different screen and window sizes and device configurations. Android 10 (API level 29) and later support a wide range of aspect ratios; examples include a 21:9 folded screen and a 1:1 unfolded display. Those examples illustrate why a few device presets cannot stand in for the whole range. See Android’s adaptive and responsive layout guidance.

Use previews and emulators for fast layout iteration

Android

Use Android Studio previews while building layouts, then run the app in the Android Emulator at representative sizes. Android Studio’s resizable emulator can switch among common display configurations in one emulator, and the emulator can model a wide range of screen sizes. Firebase Test Lab is another option when you need hosted-device coverage. These tools make it practical to check more configurations than you may own; they do not prove that every physical device behaves identically. See Android’s adaptive app documentation.

Apple platforms

Preview across supported devices, orientations, localizations, and text sizes. Apple advises checking the smallest and largest layouts early and using simulated devices to spot clipping and layout problems; some features are best inspected on real hardware. See Apple’s layout guidance.

Web apps

Safari Responsive Design Mode can preview a page at different viewport widths, heights, and pixel ratios. It tests web viewport behavior, not native app layout, and its device presets approximate rather than exactly reproduce layout, rendering, or behavior on physical hardware. See Apple’s Safari developer tools information.

Resize through breakpoints and inspect the result

Do not check only the endpoints. Resize continuously across the range your app supports, especially around layout breakpoints, where a sudden switch between designs can expose problems.

  • Look for clipped text, controls, or images, and content that becomes unreachable.
  • Check for unwanted scrolling, overlapping controls, awkward whitespace, and layouts that stop being usable.
  • Try long labels, larger text, and localized strings where applicable; a layout that fits short default text may fail under these conditions.
  • Confirm that primary actions remain visible and the hierarchy still makes sense in both compact and expanded layouts.

Exercise real tasks, not just static screens

A screen can render correctly and still fail when a user interacts with it or the configuration changes. At each meaningful layout class, run the journeys that matter: launch, navigate, enter data, submit or save, return, and resume after resizing or rotating. Check keyboard and other supported input methods, as well as touch.

  • UI behavior tests check that elements are present and interactions work—for example, that a user can submit a form or navigate to the expected screen.
  • Screenshot tests compare a rendered screen with an approved image to catch visual changes such as shifted, missing, or clipped elements.
  • Manual task checks reveal usability issues that an assertion or image diff may not explain, including whether a journey remains understandable after resizing.

Keep screenshot conditions controlled so comparisons are meaningful. When an intended design change alters an expected image, review it before updating the approved baseline. Neither a passing screenshot comparison nor a passing interaction test alone establishes that the whole app works across every configuration.

Include accessibility in the same matrix

Test the settings and assistive technologies relevant to the platforms you support, using the app’s main user tasks as the test cases. Apple recommends identifying each screen’s main tasks, choosing supported device types, and checking relevant visual and media accessibility settings and technologies such as VoiceOver, Voice Control, and Switch Control. Use physical devices selectively

Emulators, previews, and viewport modes are efficient for broad, repeatable iteration. Add physical-device checks when the feature or risk warrants them: simulations may not reproduce manufacturer, operating-system, input, performance, or rendering differences exactly. A tablet can be a useful target when you need to inspect a tablet-sized layout, but buying one is not a prerequisite; Android emulation and hosted-device access are alternatives.

Think of coverage as a balance: emulators and screenshot tests offer speed and repeatability, while selected real devices provide greater hardware fidelity. Neither approach alone catches every visual, interaction, accessibility, or state-preservation problem.

Or skip the browser setup

For web viewport checks, you can capture a page with ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; its API supports viewport-related capture options, and the other screenshot API parameter names work too. This is a rendered-page check, not a replacement for native-app emulators or interaction testing.

For example, with an API key, capture the Stripe page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
