Test accessibility by completing the app’s real user tasks on every supported platform, first with platform inspection and automated checks, then manually with screen readers and other relevant accessibility settings. Where feasible, include people with disabilities in testing. Automation can identify some barriers, but a clean scan does not establish that an app is accessible or that users can complete its workflows.

Build a test plan around real tasks

Start by listing the app’s main tasks and the screens needed to complete each one. Test complete workflows, not just isolated controls: a button may have a label and still be difficult to reach, understand, or use in context.

Include the flows that matter for your app, such as onboarding, login, forms, primary actions, errors, dialogs, notifications, and exit or recovery paths. For every screen, note the user’s goal and any dynamic state that could change what is announced or available.

Record the app version and build, supported operating systems and device types, workflows in scope, and accessibility configurations to check. Choose representative device sizes and OS versions from the range you support. There is no universal device-and-version matrix that fits every app.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Apple recommends listing the main tasks on each screen and creating a matrix of supported devices, accessibility settings, and assistive technologies. Use that matrix to track what was tested and what remains out of scope.

Use platform tools, but know what they can tell you

iOS and other Apple platforms

Use Accessibility Inspector to inspect how the app exposes interface elements and to run available audits. Apple’s audit checks cover areas including element descriptions, hit regions, contrast, element detection, and accessibility traits. On iOS-family platforms, checks also include clipped text at larger Dynamic Type sizes.

Where practical, add audits to UI tests with performAccessibilityAudit(for:). This helps catch some regressions as the app changes. Apple cautions that clearing every Accessibility Inspector audit issue does not guarantee a fully accessible app.

Android

Use Android’s accessibility analysis tools alongside automated UI tests. Current Android guidance discusses Compose testing APIs and the semantics tree. If your app uses the Views system, follow the Views-specific documentation linked from Android’s current guidance rather than assuming Compose instructions apply directly.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Automation and analysis tools can surface detectable issues, but they do not replace manual checks. In particular, they cannot establish by themselves that focus order makes sense or that a person using assistive technology can finish a real task.

Manually test iOS workflows

  1. Use a supported physical device. Turn on VoiceOver and work through the same task list you use for ordinary testing. VoiceOver is not available in Simulator. If it helps assess nonvisual use, enable Screen Curtain as well.
  2. Follow the interaction from start to finish. Check that names, roles, values, and states communicate each element’s purpose; navigation order is logical; controls activate; and all actions required by the task are reachable.
  3. Test changes and interruptions. Check whether dialogs, errors, status updates, and other changing content are announced when they appear, and whether the user can return to the workflow afterward.
  4. Check other relevant settings. Depending on the app, test Voice Control, Switch Control, Dynamic Type, color and contrast settings, motion settings, captions, audio descriptions, and transcripts. Choose settings based on the content and interaction model, not as a box-ticking exercise.

Apple cautions that Voice Control testing needs an environment where spoken commands can be heard clearly. Background noise or an unsuitable testing space can make the result misleading.

Manually test Android workflows

  1. Turn on TalkBack. Complete the same task list with spoken feedback enabled. Android describes linear navigation by swiping right or left and touch exploration by dragging a finger over the screen.
  2. Check meaning and reachability. Confirm spoken feedback communicates each element’s purpose and that all controls needed for the task can be reached and activated.
  3. Check temporary and changing content. Verify alerts and temporary messages are spoken and that users can continue or recover when the interface changes.
  4. Test non-touch and other relevant settings. For workflows that must work without touch input, use Switch Access: Android describes moving focus with a “Next” action and activating the focused control with “Select.” Test Voice Access when spoken control is relevant, and check text scaling, contrast, and media alternatives as applicable.

Check task completion and common barriers

For each workflow, judge whether a person can understand what is on screen and complete the task—not merely whether individual elements pass a scan.

  • Names and purpose: Controls have clear names and communicate what they do.
  • Order and focus: Screen-reader navigation follows a sensible sequence, and every necessary action is reachable.
  • State and feedback: Current state, validation errors, alerts, and relevant changes are communicated.
  • Visual access: Text, contrast, and target size remain usable with the settings in scope, including larger text where relevant.
  • Media access: Required captions, audio descriptions, or transcripts are available for the content being tested.
  • Recovery: A user can correct an error, dismiss or respond to a dialog, and continue or exit the workflow.

Use WCAG carefully for mobile apps

W3C’s Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.2 to Mobile Applications explains how WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA success criteria can be interpreted for native apps, mobile web apps, and hybrid apps with web components. In relevant cases, it uses a screen or view as the mobile evaluation unit.

W3C explicitly describes the note as informative guidance, not a normative standard or a complete set of mobile accessibility requirements. It also says the guidance is not sufficient by itself to ensure mobile app accessibility; some platform and component requirements are outside its coverage. W3C’s mobile overview says there is no separate W3C mobile accessibility guideline: mobile accessibility is addressed through existing guidance, including WCAG.

So use WCAG2Mobile to inform evaluation, not as proof that an app is accessible or as a substitute for testing platform behavior and task completion. The UK Government Digital Service provides one example of a public-sector audit approach: its monitoring page, last updated 30 September 2024, says it assesses sites and mobile apps against WCAG 2.2 A and AA and tests both Android and iOS versions. That describes GDS’s process; it is not a universal legal requirement or required method for every app or country.

Include user testing and regression checks

When feasible, invite people with disabilities to try representative workflows. Their experience can expose barriers that automated checks and internal checklists miss. Provide a way to report issues without requiring testers to diagnose the technical cause.

For each finding, record reproducible steps, expected and actual behavior, the app build and platform, and the assistive technology and configuration used. Fix the issue, rerun the affected workflow, and repeat relevant automated checks. Keep key audits in UI tests where practical so that changes can be checked again before release.

Choose a balanced testing approach

Testing methods complement one another; they are not interchangeable evidence of accessibility.

Approach Useful for Does not establish by itself
Platform inspection and automated checks Finding detectable issues such as missing descriptions, contrast problems, or clipped text covered by a platform audit. Whether focus order is understandable or a person can complete a full workflow.
Manual assistive-technology testing Checking spoken feedback, navigation, control activation, changing content, and task completion with VoiceOver, TalkBack, or other relevant tools. Coverage of every device, setting, user, or issue unless the test plan includes them.
Testing with people with disabilities Learning where representative users encounter barriers in real tasks and configurations. That every user’s needs or every supported configuration has been covered by a limited set of sessions.
WCAG-based evaluation Applying a shared framework to relevant success criteria across native, web, and hybrid mobile experiences. Complete coverage of mobile platform and component requirements or proof of practical task usability.

When comparing tools or planning coverage, consider platform support (iOS, Android, and any web views), the issue types detectable, whether checks are automated or hands-on, fit with UI tests and release work, coverage of complete tasks and dynamic states, and whether people with disabilities participate.

Troubleshoot misleading or incomplete results

An automated audit reports no issues

That means only that the checks it ran did not report covered issues. Continue with screen-reader workflows, other relevant accessibility settings, and task-completion checks.

A control is visible but cannot be reached with a screen reader

Reproduce the workflow with VoiceOver or TalkBack and inspect how the view hierarchy exposes the element. Check that the needed control is available in navigation and that the spoken sequence makes sense; rerun the full workflow after fixing it.

A message appears but is not announced

Test the relevant dynamic state manually. Record what action caused it and what the assistive technology announced, then verify that the user receives the necessary feedback and can proceed.

Large text causes clipped content

Repeat the relevant flow with larger text settings, including Dynamic Type on iOS where applicable. Check whether content and actions remain readable and usable rather than relying on a default-size inspection.

Automated UI-test guidance does not match the app’s Android UI

Check whether the guidance applies to Compose or Views. Android’s current material discusses Compose APIs and the semantics tree; Views-based apps should use the Views-specific documentation linked from that page.
