Use an unlisted livestream as your rehearsal. YouTube recommends unlisted streams for checking audio, video, and equipment before a real broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select the test stream, set its visibility to unlisted, connect your encoder with the stream URL and key, then check the preview, stream health, and actual viewer playback before you make the real event public.

Before you set up a test

  • Confirm live access: YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If you cannot access livestreaming, check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance before troubleshooting your encoder.
  • Choose the correct event: In Live Control Room, create or select the stream you intend to test. Keep the rehearsal separate from the public broadcast so you can deliberately check the latter’s visibility before it starts.
  • Prepare representative material: Have the actual radio program audio chain ready, along with the visual you plan to show—such as a still image or motion graphic. Testing only encoder meters may not reveal problems in the audio or visual that viewers receive.

Set up an unlisted test stream

  1. Set the test’s visibility to Unlisted. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted settings. Its filming tips specifically recommend an unlisted livestream for testing audio, video, and equipment. Unlisted is useful when someone needs to reach the test by link; check Studio’s current access controls before sharing that link. Private is another available setting, but YouTube’s testing recommendation names unlisted.
  2. Copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Enter them in the streaming encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: it lets the encoder send a feed that YouTube will accept. Do not show it in screenshots, on-air visuals, or public posts. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before using the stream again.
  3. Start sending the feed from the encoder. Wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room. If you are testing a scheduled event, click Go live there when the preview is ready and you want the test event to begin.
  4. Play real program material. Include representative speech, music, transitions, and any other elements that will be part of the broadcast. Listen to the YouTube playback on a separate device or through the normal viewer path, not just through the encoder’s local meters.
  5. Check the viewer experience. Confirm the test plays from its watch page and, if relevant to your audience, on a mobile device. Check that the visual is correct and that audio is present, understandable, and not unexpectedly interrupted.
  6. End the test cleanly. Stop the event in YouTube as appropriate, then stop the encoder after YouTube has stopped the event. Review any resulting archive and its privacy setting before reusing or deleting it.

What to check during the rehearsal

Audio and visual feed

  • Listen for the full chain: source playback, mixing or processing, encoder input, and YouTube playback. Check for silence, distortion, clipping, unwanted background noise, or a mismatch between the audio and the visual.
  • Use the visual planned for the real show. A working audio meter does not confirm that the intended still image or graphic is visible to viewers.
  • Monitor YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality continuously and reviewing messages during the event.

Upload capacity and connection

YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. For computer streaming, YouTube recommends Ethernet; Wi-Fi is not ruled out, but a wired connection may help avoid some connection variability when your setup supports it. Neither a cable nor a bandwidth check guarantees a congestion-free stream.

Compare your encoder’s configured bitrate with the upload capacity available to the streaming computer while other devices and services are using the network. Check the codec and, if the feed includes video, its resolution and frame rate as well. Choose settings that fit your actual encoder and connection: a radio stream’s visual feed can affect the video bitrate, so there is no single video bitrate to prescribe for every radio setup.

Privacy before and after the test

Unlisted means the rehearsal is not presented as a public broadcast, but anyone with its link may be able to access it; share the link only with people who need it. Verify the current Studio visibility and access controls rather than assuming a link is private. Before the real show, independently confirm that its event is set to the intended public visibility—do not assume a reused stream retained the setting you expect.

Troubleshooting a YouTube radio livestream test

What you see Likely check What to do
You cannot start a livestream Channel verification or a live-streaming restriction Check the channel’s current eligibility in YouTube Help; an encoder setting will not resolve an account-level eligibility issue.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Wrong stream selected, server URL, or key Confirm the selected event and copy its current server URL and key into the intended encoder. Keep the key private; reset it in Live Control Room if it may have been exposed.
The encoder is sending, but there is no usable preview Feed not yet visible to YouTube, or the wrong event is open Verify the selected event and encoder connection, then wait for the Live Control Room preview before treating the setup as ready.
Audio meters move, but listeners hear silence or poor audio The local meter does not represent the full viewer playback path Listen to the YouTube watch-page playback on another device. Check the program source, routing into the encoder, and the audio actually received by YouTube.
Playback buffers or stream-health messages appear Bitrate may exceed available upload capacity, or the connection may be shared or unstable Check available upload bandwidth under normal network use, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and consider Ethernet for a computer setup that can use it.
The test is not reachable by the intended reviewer Visibility or link-access expectations do not match Confirm the event is unlisted and share its watch link with the reviewer. Check Studio’s current access controls; do not assume unlisted is equivalent to private.
The rehearsal ends but an archive remains A recorded replay may have been created Review the archive and its visibility in Studio before reusing or deleting it.
