To test a WooCommerce store without disrupting real orders, use a staging copy, make a current backup before updates, and run checkout with your payment gateway’s test mode or sandbox. Follow a customer journey from product page through the order confirmation, then inspect the order, payment records, emails, analytics, and connected services. WooCommerce’s “Testing orders” guidance says to test payments exclusively on staging to avoid unintended complications on a live site.

How do I test my WooCommerce store safely?

  1. Create a staging site. Use your host’s staging feature or restore a backup to a separate WordPress installation. Keep it distinct from production, and check whether it can still send real email or contact live services.
  2. Back up before updates. WooCommerce identifies both the wp-content folder, which contains themes, extensions, and uploads, and the database, which contains products, orders, posts, pages, and settings, as store data to protect. Arrange a current backup of both before updating.
  3. Write down the store-specific cases to test. Include the products, payment methods, shipping rules, taxes, emails, and extensions customers actually use.
  4. Run the tests on staging. Use payment-provider test mode or sandbox credentials, not a live card transaction followed by a refund.
  5. Inspect records and side effects. Check the WooCommerce order, gateway transaction or logs, customer-facing confirmation, email behavior, analytics, and integrations.
  6. Remove test orders and address cleanup. Delete test orders when finished and verify that no connected service has queued fulfillment, messages, or other actions.
  7. Deploy the tested update set to production, then verify production. Recheck the storefront and checkout with an appropriate test payment method or low-risk workflow, and review admin notices and failed scheduled actions.

What should I include in a WooCommerce test?

Test as a shopper would, and adapt the checklist to your store’s configuration. A successful checkout alone does not prove that shipping, tax, stock, notifications, and integrations behaved correctly.

  • Product page: Confirm the product loads, the correct price and options appear, and images and relevant product details display.
  • Cart: Add the product, change quantity, remove it, and check that totals update correctly.
  • Checkout: Check required fields, address handling, available payment methods, and the expected shipping and tax calculations.
  • Payment outcomes: Test a successful transaction. Where the gateway supports it, test a declined or otherwise unsuccessful transaction so staff can see the customer message and resulting order state.
  • Confirmation: Confirm that checkout reaches the expected order-received page and that the order appears in WooCommerce with the expected status and details.
  • Follow-up behavior: Check customer and store emails, stock changes, shipping workflow, and any extension-specific behavior such as subscriptions or fulfillment integrations.

A failed-payment case is a useful store-specific test, not a universal WooCommerce requirement. Use the payment provider’s supported test scenarios and never use real customer payment details for test transactions.

How do I place a test order in WooPayments?

WooPayments documents two approaches: turn on test mode for a connected account, or use a separate test account. In either case, use the current WooPayments instructions for your account and country because available options and test details can change.

Test mode on a connected account

  1. On staging, open the WooPayments settings under WooCommerce’s payment settings and enable test mode.
  2. Add a product to the cart and complete checkout with the test card data currently provided by WooPayments.
  3. Check that the shopper reaches the Order received page.
  4. In the admin area, verify the order under WooCommerce > Orders and the transaction under Payments > Transactions.

WooPayments’ documentation gives the US Visa test number 4242 4242 4242 4242, with any future expiry date and any three-digit CVC. This is test data, not a real payment card; use the provider’s current instructions and region-specific details. The same page cautions that using US generic test cards with a non-US account country may show additional test fees. WooPayments states that test mode does not charge fees. A live transaction refunded afterward is different: WooPayments says its transaction fees are not refunded.

Separate WooPayments test account

A test account is a separate option for running test transactions without personal or business details. Its availability varies: WooPayments says merchants in Singapore and the UAE cannot use test accounts, and the site still needs to connect to WordPress.com. If a test account is upgraded to live, the test account is deleted. Existing test orders remain in WooCommerce Orders, but the old transaction data does not remain under Payments > Transactions. Consider whether that loss of transaction history matters before transitioning the account.

How do I test the WooCommerce Stripe extension?

  1. On the staging site, enable test mode in the WooCommerce payment settings for the Stripe extension.
  2. Use Stripe’s test card details and scenarios for the outcome you need to exercise, such as a successful payment or decline.
  3. Complete checkout and confirm the customer-facing Order received page appears for successful test transactions.
  4. Open the order in the dashboard and inspect its linked charge details, along with the WooCommerce order record and any relevant gateway logs.

Stripe’s extension documentation describes test cards for multiple outcomes. Follow the current extension and Stripe instructions rather than assuming every payment UI or option remains unchanged.

What happens to test orders, emails, and integrations?

A WooCommerce test order is operational data, not necessarily a specially labeled object. Test orders may send ordinary customer or store emails and may appear in analytics. A plugin, fulfillment service, or other integration may treat one like a live order unless its own test behavior is configured.

  • Inspect order notes and service logs, not just the storefront confirmation.
  • Delete test orders after testing so they are not inadvertently shipped, processed, or counted in store analytics.

What should I check after updating WooCommerce?

First test the update set on staging. After staging checks pass, deploy that same set to production and verify the live store’s critical customer paths. WooCommerce recommends checking the storefront and several product pages, adding a product to the cart, placing an appropriate test order, and checking the payment, shipping, tax, and email behavior your store relies on.

  • Review admin notices, extension alerts, and failed scheduled actions.
  • Confirm that product pages, cart totals, checkout, and order confirmation work after deployment.
  • Verify the payment, shipping, tax, and email outcomes that matter to your configuration.
  • If a consequential failure appears, make checkout unavailable as appropriate, restore from backup if necessary, and troubleshoot on staging before attempting another production change.

How do I troubleshoot a failed test payment?

WooCommerce’s payment troubleshooting guidance recommends using a separate staging environment and the gateway’s test or sandbox mode. It lists these as diagnostic clues, not guaranteed causes:

Blank page A PHP issue may be involved. Check PHP and site logs, then reproduce on staging to isolate the error.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does WooPayments test mode charge transaction fees?

WooPayments states that test mode does not charge fees. A real live-mode order refunded afterward can still incur transaction fees that are not refunded.
