Check the public page, not just your CMS preview. Fetch the URL as a crawler would, inspect its Open Graph title, description, and og:image, open that image directly, and then verify the link in the destination platform’s own inspector or an unpublished draft. A third-party checker is a fast first pass, but only the target platform can show its final crop and card layout.
What a social preview actually uses
When someone shares a URL, the destination service fetches the publicly available page and reads metadata from the response. The card can include a title, description, domain, and image. The image shown in your content-management system is not proof that a crawler can retrieve the same values.
Start with the exact canonical URL you intend to publish. A login wall, firewall rule, robots restriction, or metadata inserted only after client-side JavaScript runs can make the crawler see a different page. The image URL in og:image must also be reachable without a session.
A complete pre-share workflow
- Publish or stage a public URL. Use HTTPS and test the final URL, including its path and important query behavior. If staging is protected, your checker may not reproduce a platform crawler’s view.
- Inspect the raw response. Request the page without being logged in. In a browser, choose View Source (not only the Elements panel) and search for
og:title,og:description, andog:image. A command-line check is useful:curl -L -A "facebookexternalhit/1.1" -s https://example.com/article | grep -i -E 'og:title|og:description|og:image'
Use your real URL in place of the example. The user-agent is only a diagnostic approximation; it does not guarantee that a platform will fetch identically. - Run an Open Graph preview checker. Enter the public URL and review the extracted title, description, image URL, and simulated card. Tools such as Sequel describe URL fetching, metadata extraction, image-load checks, and mock previews; CachePlex similarly presents third-party previews and cache-refresh guidance. These renderings are approximations, not a promise of the final app layout.
- Open the image URL itself. Paste the exact
og:imagevalue into a private browser window. Confirm it returns an image rather than an HTML error page, requires no cookie, and does not redirect to a login or expiring signed URL. Check that the file is not accidentally zero bytes or an unsupported format. - Evaluate the composition. Look at the image at the approximate size of a card. Keep the subject and any essential text away from edges that may be cropped. Do not rely on one universal “safe” dimension: services resize and crop differently.
- Verify the destination service. Use its URL inspector when available, or paste the link into an unpublished post/composer and inspect it before publishing. This is the deciding check because a third-party mockup cannot reproduce every current layout.
- Test the intended share format. A URL/article share is different from uploading an image file. LinkedIn’s documentation treats those as separate flows, so test the one you will actually use.
Inspect the metadata that matters
Place Open Graph tags in the document head of the publicly served HTML. A minimal set looks like this:

<meta property="og:type" content="article">The title and description are part of the same card as the image. A checker that reports an old title may be showing stale HTML, a different URL variant, or tags generated by a template you did not edit. Compare its values with View Source and with the final canonical URL.
Server-rendered versus client-rendered tags
If JavaScript adds the tags after page load, a crawler that reads the initial response may miss them. Prefer server-side or statically generated metadata. Inspect the response body delivered by your server; do not assume that seeing tags in browser developer tools means every crawler received them.
Image URL and access checks
- Use an absolute HTTPS URL in
og:image. - Make the resource publicly readable and stable while the post is being shared.
- Check that security middleware, hotlink protection, or a robots policy does not block common crawlers.
- Ensure the response is the intended image, with a correct image content type, rather than an HTML challenge or redirect.
How to judge the image before it goes live

Do not treat the LinkedIn Images API limit of fewer than 36,152,320 pixels as a universal Open Graph recommendation. That figure applies to image assets uploaded through that API, not every organic article-card preview.

Platform-native confirmation
For a link share, paste the article URL into a draft or use LinkedIn’s URL/article inspection path. Do not test only by uploading the image directly: LinkedIn documents direct image shares separately from article URL shares, and the two paths can display different fields and behavior.
Other destinations
Use the destination’s current debugger, inspector, or draft composer when one is provided. Messaging apps and social networks can cache fetched metadata, change card dimensions, or omit fields. If no inspector exists, a private draft is safer than publishing a test post.
Troubleshooting wrong, missing, or old previews
The image is missing
- Read the actual
og:imagevalue from the public response. - Open that URL anonymously and check for redirects, access controls, and an image response.
- Review firewall, robots, hotlink, and bot-protection rules that could deny a crawler.
- Confirm the tag is in the document head and not added only after JavaScript executes.
The checker shows different text or image than your CMS
The CMS editor is not the source a crawler reads. Compare the checker’s extracted values with View Source at the exact shared URL. Template overrides, locale variants, canonical redirects, and page caches commonly explain the difference.

The checker looks correct but the live card does not
Use the target platform’s inspector or draft as the deciding evidence. A third-party checker can validate tags and image loading while still getting the final crop, field order, or card design wrong.
An old card remains after an update
Cached metadata is a plausible cause. Re-fetch the URL through the platform’s available inspection tool, then inspect a fresh draft. Cache behavior and refresh controls differ by service, so do not assume an immediate refresh or a universal cache lifetime.
A LinkedIn API image upload fails
LinkedIn’s Images API documentation lists JPG, GIF, and PNG and a limit of fewer than 36,152,320 pixels for that API asset. Those constraints apply to the upload API; they are not a general dimension rule for Open Graph article cards.

Automate a visual check of the rendered page
Metadata inspection answers “what can the crawler read?” A screenshot answers “what does the rendered page look like?” Automating both catches cases where a hero image, consent overlay, or responsive layout obscures the content you expect visitors to see. - Shared URL is public, canonical, and the final version.
og:title,og:description, andog:imageappear in the initial HTML response.- The image URL loads anonymously and is not blocked or redirected to a challenge.
- The image remains legible after reduction and likely cropping.
- A checker reports the expected metadata and image.
- The destination platform’s inspector or unpublished composer shows the intended card.
- You tested the actual share type: URL/article card versus direct image upload.
- After edits, you re-fetched through the platform’s available tool instead of assuming caches expired.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a preview checker guarantee the card users will see?
No. It can fetch tags, test image access, and simulate a card, but the destination platform controls its own crop, fields, cache, and layout. Confirm with that platform’s inspector or an unpublished draft.
Why does an image appear in my CMS but not in the shared link?
The CMS view may use logged-in or client-rendered data. Check the public HTML for an absolute og:image URL and open that URL anonymously; crawler blocking, redirects, or a tag added after JavaScript runs can prevent retrieval.
