Test a website across browsers by repeating the same important user journeys in a small, risk-based matrix: start with Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, cover the desktop and mobile viewports your visitors use, and add branded browsers or real devices when a feature depends on them. Playwright can automate this work locally or in CI, but emulation and a passing automated run do not prove compatibility with every browser, operating system, version, or physical device.
Plan browser tests around the ways people use your site
Do not begin by trying to test every possible browser-and-device combination. First identify which failures would prevent visitors from completing important tasks. The matrix should reflect your audience and the technical risks of your site, not an arbitrary count of configurations.
Choose critical user journeys
List the pages and actions that matter most, such as loading a key page, navigating between sections, signing in, submitting a form, searching, completing a checkout or booking, or using media and interactive controls. Include only journeys relevant to your site. A marketing site may prioritize navigation and lead forms; an application may need account flows and data entry.
Build a manageable browser matrix
As a starting point, cover Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, with representative desktop and mobile viewports. For every test run, record the browser engine or brand, operating system, viewport or device, version, and whether the environment is emulated or a target environment. Add a specific browser version, operating system, branded browser, or device when your audience or a feature makes it important.

For example, a team might use Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit for routine automated checks, then add branded Chrome or Edge stable for release regressions, and an Apple environment for a Safari-specific issue. The right coverage depends on the site’s users and features; there is no single matrix that proves a site works everywhere.
Automate the same checks with Playwright
Playwright has browser projects for Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, Chrome, and Edge, and runs all configured projects by default. Its browser engines are useful for repeatable automated coverage, but they are not all identical to the branded browsers people install. Install Playwright and its browser binaries
In a Node.js project, install Playwright and its test runner, then install the browser binaries required by the installed version:
npm init -ynpm install --save-dev @playwright/testnpx playwright install
After upgrading Playwright, run npx playwright install again so the browser binaries match the installed Playwright version. For operating-system dependencies on supported Linux environments, Playwright also provides npx playwright install --with-deps.

Configure desktop and mobile projects
Create playwright.config.ts in the project root. This example runs one test suite in Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, and a mobile Safari-like preset:

Device presets set browser parameters such as viewport, screen size, user agent, and touch behavior; they do not turn a desktop computer into the named physical device. Presets also assume particular platform details, so review or override their settings when the platform matters. The Playwright emulation guide describes the parameters that can be emulated, including locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and color scheme.
Write a repeatable journey test
Put the same user journey in tests/smoke.spec.ts. For example, this checks that a navigation link reaches a page and that a form can be submitted:

});Update the accessible names and expected confirmation to match your page. Prefer role- and label-based locators that reflect what a visitor can use. If a journey requires a test account, seed data or a safe test payment method, configure those explicitly rather than running destructive or real transactions against production.

Run and target projects
Run the configured matrix with:
npx playwright testTo run a single project while debugging, use its configured name:
npx playwright test --project=webkit-desktopReview the test output and, for failures, open the trace or screenshot saved by the configured settings. In CI, keep the browser installation aligned with the Playwright version used by the job and preserve failure artifacts so a browser-specific failure can be investigated.
Know what automated browser coverage does—and does not—prove
Engine coverage versus branded browsers
Playwright’s Firefox build depends on patches and is not the branded Firefox build. Its WebKit is based on current upstream WebKit and is not branded Safari. Chromium is useful for broad automated checks and early warning of Chromium changes, but it can differ from official Chrome and Edge binaries; codec behavior is one example noted in Playwright’s documentation. Use branded Chrome or Edge stable channels when you need regression coverage against those public releases, and validate Safari-sensitive behavior in an appropriate Apple environment when the distinction matters.
Emulation versus a real device
Emulation is useful for responsive layouts and common mobile settings: it can set viewport and screen dimensions, user agent, touch, locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and color scheme. It does not establish behavior that depends on physical hardware, operating-system integration, or a particular browser build. When those factors are material—or when a defect appears only on a target device—test in that target environment.

Keep the matrix current
Playwright browser binaries are tied to the installed Playwright version. Reinstall them after upgrading. Bundled Chromium may run ahead of branded Chrome and Edge, so use a branded stable channel for a check that specifically needs the currently shipped browser. Consider whether media codecs or enterprise browser policies make a particular binary or environment necessary.
Investigate failures and verify fixes
A failure is useful only if you can reproduce it and identify what differs. For each browser-specific issue, capture the environment and the exact journey rather than reporting only that a page “does not work.”
- Record browser brand or engine, version, operating system, viewport or device, and whether it was emulated.
- Write down the steps, expected behavior, and actual behavior.
- Check console and network errors, then attach a screenshot or trace when available.
- Retest the same steps in the failing environment after the fix, followed by the core matrix.
For visual differences, compare the same page state and viewport; otherwise, changed content or timing can look like a browser defect. For intermittent failures, check whether navigation, fonts, images, or other required resources finished loading before the test made its assertion.

Local Playwright is a practical starting point when your team can maintain the needed browser binaries and operating systems. A hosted service can help when you need manual access to environments or browser-and-device combinations that are inconvenient to maintain locally. The trade-off is reliance on the provider’s available configurations and support matrix.

Can I test multiple browsers automatically?
Yes. Configure Playwright browser projects and run the same test suite across them with npx playwright test.
Does testing WebKit mean my site is verified in Safari?
No. Playwright WebKit is not branded Safari. It is useful automated coverage, but use an appropriate Apple environment when Safari-specific behavior needs validation.
Do mobile device presets test a real phone?
