Test a web UI with functional tests by automating a small set of important user journeys, interacting with controls as a user would, and asserting the visible outcomes that matter. Keep each test isolated and repeatable. Add component and API tests for narrower behavior, then run browser tests in CI against the browsers your product supports.

Choose the user journeys worth testing

Start with a user goal, not a page or implementation detail. Write down the steps a person takes, the state the application must change, and what they should be able to see afterward. A useful functional test verifies that the interface and the integrated application deliver that outcome together.

Prioritize a few flows where a failure would block a release or materially harm users. Depending on your application, these might include signing in, completing a purchase, or making a change that must persist when the user moves to another screen. Cypress describes these as common end-to-end scenarios, not a required checklist for every product: Cypress testing types.

  • Authentication: Can the intended user reach a protected area after signing in, and does the interface show the expected account state?
  • Purchase or submission: Does the user complete the workflow and receive a visible confirmation, with the resulting state reflected where expected?
  • Cross-screen persistence: Does a change made on one screen still appear after navigating elsewhere or reloading, when persistence is part of the requirement?
  • Release smoke checks: Do the most important paths still work in the deployed application before or after a release?

For each flow, define the initial conditions, user actions, and observable result. Avoid writing a test whose only proof of success is that a function ran or a database row exists: those checks can be useful elsewhere, but they do not establish that the user-facing workflow works.

Use the right test layer for each question

Browser-driven end-to-end tests, component tests, and API tests provide different kinds of evidence. They complement one another; a faster, narrower test is not a substitute when confidence depends on the complete UI and application working together.

Test layer Use it for What it cannot establish on its own
End-to-end (browser) A user journey through the rendered interface and integrated application, such as authentication or a multi-screen flow. It takes more setup and maintenance than narrower tests, and a passing set of journeys does not cover every possible state.
Component Specific component behavior and isolated interface states. It cannot show that the whole application, its services, and the complete user journey work together.
API Service contracts, backend behavior, boundaries, or fast creation of test data. It does not tell you whether the UI renders or behaves correctly.

Cypress explains these scope and trade-off differences in its testing types documentation. For example, an API call can create a user or seed an order faster than filling out a form. That can make setup more reliable and efficient, but keep a browser test that actually exercises the form if the form itself is what you need to verify.

Write browser tests around user-visible behavior

Automate the same meaningful interaction a user would perform: find the control, act on it, and check the resulting interface. Playwright recommends testing rendered output rather than implementation details such as internal component state: Playwright best practices.

Choose a locator that matches the contract

Use a role and accessible name, or visible text, when the control’s meaning or wording is part of what the test is checking. If copy may change without changing the behavior under test, use a stable test attribute instead. Cypress also recommends choosing selectors deliberately rather than depending on fragile styling or incidental page structure: Cypress best practices.

A role-based locator does not by itself prove that the page is accessible. It is a way to locate an element; accessibility still needs explicit checks and evaluation.

Assert outcomes, not just actions

A click is not a successful test. After the action, assert a meaningful visible consequence: a confirmation message appears, a form shows a useful validation error, an item is present in the expected view, or a saved value is shown on another screen. Assert only what is relevant to the user goal so the test remains readable and failures point to a real behavior change.

Keep tests isolated and repeatable

Each test should establish the state it needs and be safe to run independently. Do not rely on a previous test having created an account, left the browser on a particular page, or run first. Cypress recommends organizing specs around features and user flows, and using programmatic login and state control where appropriate: Cypress best practices.

  • Give each test controlled data and a known starting state.
  • Use a setup API for users or records when that keeps the test focused on the UI behavior under test.
  • Reset or isolate browser state where needed, including cookies and persisted data.
  • Do not make one test’s success depend on another test’s side effects or execution order.
  • Keep a failing test’s scope narrow enough that its output identifies the broken journey or assertion.

Run the browsers your product supports

Choose a browser matrix from the compatibility commitments you make to users; one fixed matrix is not right for every application. Playwright documents configured browser projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, while Selenium notes that browser incompatibilities can complicate functional automation: Playwright browser projects and Selenium test practices.

Run the suite regularly in CI so failures are visible as part of development and release work. Playwright recommends regular CI execution and supports browser-project configuration: Playwright best practices. Use failure diagnostics thoughtfully: traces can help inspect actions, DOM snapshots, and network requests, but recording traces for every test can add performance overhead. Capture them in a way that helps investigate failures without burdening every run.

Include accessibility checks without treating them as proof

Automated accessibility scans can identify some detectable problems, but a clean scan cannot prove that an interface is accessible. Add checks for relevant UI states, assess the interface manually, and include people with varied access needs in user testing where feasible. Playwright’s accessibility guidance explicitly notes the limits of automated checks: Playwright accessibility testing.

Consider what a user must be able to perceive and operate in the tested flow, including meaningful names for controls, keyboard interaction, and understandable feedback. A test that locates a button by role or name is not a substitute for checking those outcomes.

Debug a failing functional test

  • The test passes alone but fails in the suite: Look for shared state, execution-order assumptions, reused data, or browser state left behind by another test. Make setup explicit and tests independently runnable.
  • A locator stops finding a control: Check whether the visible name or role changed, whether the intended content loaded, and whether the selector relied on incidental markup. Use a stable test attribute if wording is not part of the behavior being tested.
  • The click succeeds but the test fails afterward: Inspect the expected visible result and relevant network activity. The action may not have completed, the application may have returned an error, or the assertion may target the wrong outcome.
  • A test is flaky across runs or browsers: Verify its initial data and browser assumptions, then inspect trace information, DOM snapshots, and network requests. Check the browsers and device profiles against the product’s actual support commitments.
  • An accessibility scan is clean but users still encounter barriers: Treat that as a limit of automated coverage, not evidence that the experience is fully accessible. Add manual assessment and inclusive user testing.

If you need screenshots of pages while documenting or inspecting test results, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; the API accepts options for formats and capture behavior. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters.

Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents, including Claude and Cursor, take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
