Use a branch deploy for an ongoing branch-level preview; use local development for quick checks while coding.
Choose the right Netlify testing environment

Netlify distinguishes request-scoped Deploy Previews from branch-scoped branch deploys; a deploy permalink is useful when you need to inspect one successful deploy later. See Netlify’s comparison of preview options and its deploy overview.
Review a change with a Deploy Preview
- Push your change through the connected repository workflow. Netlify creates Deploy Previews for pull or merge requests by default unless preview controls have been changed. The preview lets you inspect the proposed change before production.
- Open the preview URL. Test the routes you changed and representative journeys, such as navigation, forms, search, or checkout, as relevant to your site. Do not limit the check to the home page.
- Check access before sharing. Deploy Preview URLs may be open to anyone who has the link unless password protection or team login protection is configured. Set protection before sharing content that should remain restricted.
- Fix and review again. When you push an update to the request, review the resulting preview for the new version before merging.

Use a branch deploy for persistent branch review
Choose a branch deploy when a team needs a continuing environment associated with a branch, rather than a preview tied to one pull or merge request. Enable branch deploys for selected branches or for all new branches in the project configuration. The branch URL changes as that branch is deployed, so it is not a fixed record of an earlier version. Add a Lighthouse audit to deploys
Netlify’s Lighthouse build plugin can display Lighthouse scores and reports in the UI and deploy logs, and can post scores in pull or merge request deploy notifications. Its audits cover areas such as performance, SEO, and accessibility. Use the results to spot issues, then manually exercise important pages and user journeys: an audit does not replace functional review.
Netlify recommends configuring the plugin in netlify.toml when you need more customization, including auditing different URL paths. The documented integration does not support sites or paths that require login. See Netlify’s Lighthouse scores and reports documentation.

Understand preview indexing and privacy
Netlify documents an X-Robots-Tag: noindex response header for Deploy Previews, unpublished production deploys, and old branch deploys. Its documentation says the currently published production deploy and most recent branch deploys can be indexed. Site-specific headers and configuration can affect a real site, so check your own production workflow if indexing matters. See Netlify’s deploy overview.
noindex is an indexing directive, not access control. A preview can still be accessible to anyone with its URL unless you configure password or team login protection.

Publish and verify the production site
After review, merge or publish through your normal deployment workflow, then open the primary domain and check the live version. Production deploys replace the previous production version; Netlify also supports rolling back a production deploy. Verify domain-specific settings and integrations on the live site rather than assuming the preview behaved identically. See Netlify’s production deploy documentation.
Troubleshoot a failed or unexpected deploy
- The preview is missing: Check that the repository workflow and preview settings are configured as expected; Deploy Previews are created by default for pull or merge requests unless preview controls have been changed. Netlify’s Create deploys documentation covers deploy creation.
- The preview should be private: Configure password protection or team login protection before sharing the link. A
noindexheader does not restrict access. - The Lighthouse report is absent for a login-only page: The documented plugin integration does not support pages that require login. Use another review method for those routes.
- A deploy failed: Inspect the deploy details, then retry from the latest branch commit; Netlify also documents a retry option that clears the cache. A retry builds from the branch HEAD, which may differ from the commit that produced the original deploy. Consult Manage deploys.
