Playwright is a practical way to automate Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit locally; you can also configure branded Chrome and Edge. Use device emulation for responsive checks, and a hosted service with a local tunnel when you need remote browsers or actual devices to reach a private site.
Choose coverage that matches your site
There is no universal browser matrix that fits every project. Base yours on the browsers and devices your site promises to support, the workflows that matter most, and what you can maintain. Start with representative browser engines; add branded browsers or remote devices if your support needs call for them.
- Browser engines: Playwright documents projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Testing these helps expose differences between engines.
- Branded browsers: Playwright can target Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge through browser channels. Its downloaded Chromium build alone does not establish that you tested branded Chrome or Edge.
- Responsive layouts: Device emulation can configure viewport, screen size, user agent, touch, and other environment properties. It is not a test on a physical phone or tablet.
- Remote coverage: A hosted service can provide browser/device access and, with a local tunnel, connect those browsers to a private development site.
Playwright’s browser binaries are versioned alongside Playwright releases. Keep the framework and installed browsers aligned, and update them when you intend to validate newer browser builds. See the Playwright browser documentation.
Run repeatable checks locally with Playwright
1. Start the development server
Start your app using the command for its framework, and note the local URL it prints, such as http://localhost:3000. There is no universal server command: it depends on your project. Keep the server running while tests execute, and confirm that the URL opens in a browser before debugging the test setup.

2. Install Playwright and its browsers
For a JavaScript project, install Playwright Test and its browser binaries using the CLI:
npm init playwright@latestcreates a test setup and asks which options to configure.- Alternatively, in an existing project, run
npm install -D @playwright/test, thennpx playwright install.
Use the install command associated with your installed Playwright version so the browser binaries match the framework. The exact setup choices can differ between a new project and an existing one. See the official browser installation guide.
3. Configure browser projects
In playwright.config.ts, define projects for the engines you need. This example runs the same suite in Playwright’s Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit builds, then adds branded Chrome and Edge as separate targets. Remove projects your team does not need. To use Chrome or Edge channels, install the corresponding browser as directed by Playwright’s browser documentation.

4. Write tests around user-visible behavior
A test should do something a visitor would do and assert an expected result, rather than merely checking that a page loaded. For example, this test opens a page, checks its title, and verifies that a navigation link is visible. Change the URL, title, and selector to match your site:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page has working primary navigation', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await expect(page).toHaveTitle(/Your site name/);
await expect(page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Contact' })).toBeVisible();
});
Add assertions for important journeys such as form feedback, account flows, or checkout steps when those exist on your site. Playwright describes its approach this way: “Playwright tests are simple: they perform actions and assert the state against expectations.” Its test runner also checks actionability before interactions and supports isolated test environments. See writing tests.

5. Run the same suite across projects
Run npx playwright test to execute tests in all configured projects. To focus on one project, use npx playwright test --project=firefox, substituting the project name in your config. Compare failures by browser, then rerun the affected flow after a fix.
When a test fails, distinguish an actual browser-specific behavior from a test problem: a selector may be ambiguous, a page may not have finished the relevant transition, or the local server may be unavailable. Playwright’s guidance on actionability and test isolation can help diagnose these cases.
Test responsive behavior with device emulation
Emulation is useful for checking layout changes and interactions at configured mobile dimensions. For a quick run, Playwright provides device presets, or you can specify viewport and touch settings in a project. For example:

Choose a preset available in your installed Playwright version, or set the properties you need directly. A preset configures simulated properties; this remains an emulation workflow and does not establish that the site works on a particular physical device. Playwright documents the available controls in its emulation guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test a localhost site in remote browsers
Use remote testing when you need a browser or device that is not available locally, or when interactive inspection on a real device matters. A hosted testing service can connect to a local or private-network website through a tunnel. BrowserStack documents this capability in Local Testing; its Live offering supports interactive browser/device testing.
- Start the local site and confirm it responds at its local URL.
- Set up the provider’s local tunnel according to its current instructions and verify that the tunnel is connected.
- Open the site from the hosted browser/device session using the local hostname or address supported by the tunnel.
- Exercise the same important flows you test locally, and record the browser/device details with any failure.
Provider support and terms can change, so check the service’s current documentation before relying on a particular browser, device, or tunnel configuration. Remote testing is optional; basic Playwright automation does not require a hosted service.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The test cannot reach the page: Check that the development server is running, the configured
baseURLand port are correct, and the app is ready before the test navigates. - Playwright says a browser executable is missing: Install the browser binaries for the current Playwright version with
npx playwright install. If you selected a branded Chrome or Edge channel, ensure that target is installed and available as required by Playwright. - Only one browser project runs: Check that the other projects are present in
playwright.config.tsand that the command does not specify a single--project. - A click or assertion times out: Confirm the element is present and uniquely identified, the expected state is actually reached, and no earlier step left the page in a different state. Prefer user-facing locators and state assertions over fixed delays where possible.
- Mobile emulation differs from a real phone: That is a scope limit of emulation, not proof of a defect. Use a remote physical-device session when actual hardware behavior is required.
- A remote session cannot open localhost: Confirm the tunnel is active, the local server is reachable from the machine running the tunnel, and the hostname/port follows the provider’s tunnel instructions.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot of a page, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. This is useful for capturing a page, but it does not replace interacting with your site in multiple browsers or asserting that user flows work.
Example cURL call:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before the capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners as a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
