To test a game across screen sizes, run the same controlled gameplay or UI state at a project-specific set of resolutions and aspect ratios, capture each run, and compare it with the matching approved screenshot baseline. Unity and Unreal offer engine-integrated test workflows; Playwright is an option for browser-rendered games, not standalone native builds. Add physical-device checks for platform-specific behavior rather than treating them as a substitute for the broader matrix.
Build a screen-size matrix that reflects your game
There is no universal resolution list that covers every game. Start with the platforms you support and the places where layout or rendering is most likely to change. Include representative narrow and wide aspect ratios, small and large render sizes, relevant orientations, and target platforms. Include cases such as a compact HUD layout, unusually wide gameplay view, or portrait UI if those are supported by your game.
Keep resolution, aspect ratio, orientation, and platform as distinct test inputs: two displays with the same pixel dimensions can still expose different layout behavior if their aspect ratios or platform rules differ. Example dimensions can help communicate a matrix, but label them as examples—not required standards—and replace them with configurations appropriate to your supported devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose cases by risk, not by an arbitrary device count
- Cover the narrowest and widest supported aspect ratios where UI may clip, overlap, or leave unexpected gaps.
- Include the smallest and largest relevant render sizes to expose scaling and readability problems.
- Test each supported orientation when the game changes layout between portrait and landscape.
- Represent platform-specific targets separately when platform behavior, safe areas, or rendering differs.
Record the selected configurations and why they matter. This makes it easier to tell whether a future failure represents a newly exposed risk or a test configuration that no longer reflects supported targets.

Stabilize the game state before capture
A meaningful visual comparison requires the same scene and state on every matrix entry. Launch a known level or scene, set up the camera and UI, and wait for the intended state or frame before taking the screenshot. Freeze or remove incidental variability where practical, such as animations, random content, or changing overlays. If the feature under test is itself animated, choose and reproduce a defined capture point rather than comparing arbitrary frames.
Keep state setup separate from display configuration. If a screenshot changes, that separation helps identify whether the cause is resolution, platform, or a changed game state. Use the project’s engine test workflow to set up runtime behavior rather than relying on fragile external mouse or keyboard timing wherever possible.
Run automated screenshot tests in Unity or Unreal
Unity: use Edit Mode or Play Mode tests
Unity’s Test Framework supports Edit Mode and Play Mode tests, with Play Mode suited to runtime code exercised over frames. Tests can run through the Editor’s Test Runner, command line, or code. Unity’s game-testing guidance describes targeting standalone, iOS, and Android. Build a project-specific parameterized test around your selected display configurations, establish the same known scene state for each run, and capture only after it is stable. See Unity’s Test Framework documentation and its game-testing guide.

Unreal Engine: use automation and Screenshot Comparison
Unreal Engine’s Automation System includes test execution and a separate Screenshot Comparison area for rendering comparisons. Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 Automation System guide documents results grouped by machine, platform, and operating-system version, along with result reporting and CSV export. Its automation-test guide explains how to create tests. Start with the Automation System User Guide and Create Automation Tests.
Unreal Frontend can build, deploy, and launch across target devices and run automation tests on multiple selected instances in parallel; see Using the Unreal Frontend Tool. Confirm that the relevant feature and plugins are available and enabled in your engine version. Epic notes that recent versions may require relevant testing plugins for automation tests to appear in the Automation tab.
Browser-rendered games: use Playwright for browser output
For a game rendered in a browser, Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots are the same before comparing with the expectation. Its options include accepted pixel differences, a threshold, screenshot scale (css or device), and animation handling. Screenshot assertions require the Playwright test runner; this is not a native capture framework for standalone Unity or Unreal builds. See Playwright’s PageAssertions documentation.
Capture, label, and preserve useful evidence
For every result, retain the screenshot and enough metadata to reproduce its conditions. A practical filename or associated manifest can include:

- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
- Build or commit identifier.
- Test name and known scene or state.
- Resolution, aspect ratio, and orientation.
- Platform and device or target configuration.
- Baseline version and test run identifier.
Keep approved baseline images in version control or another reviewable artifact store. These labels and storage practices are workflow recommendations; do not assume the engine automatically supplies all of this metadata. In CI, retain both the failed capture and its diff, plus the target configuration and test duration, so a failure can be investigated without rerunning blindly.
Compare against the matching baseline with controlled tolerance
Compare each capture only with the baseline for the same relevant resolution, aspect ratio, orientation, and platform. Comparing unlike sizes produces noise rather than a useful regression signal. Set a documented tolerance that reflects the project’s rendering pipeline and the kinds of changes reviewers should accept. A zero-difference rule can be too strict when rendering has expected variation; a permissive tolerance can hide real clipping or layout changes.
Review unexpected differences before updating a baseline. A baseline should change because the visual result was intentionally reviewed and approved—not merely because a test failed. For browser tests, Playwright exposes pixel-difference, threshold, scale, and animation controls; those concepts can inform visual-regression policy elsewhere, but its API itself applies to Playwright tests.
What to inspect in a diff
- UI clipped at an edge or overlapped by another element.
- Text or controls that become difficult to read at small sizes.
- Missing UI, unexpected cropping, or excessive empty space.
- Safe-area behavior on a relevant platform or device.
- Changes that appear only at a particular aspect ratio, orientation, or target.
Use real devices for platform-specific coverage
Automated resolution runs provide repeatable breadth, while physical Android and iOS devices can reveal platform- and hardware-dependent behavior. Unity describes standalone, iOS, and Android test targets. Unreal Frontend supports deployment to target devices and running tests on selected instances. Use a smaller set of physical devices where they add meaningful coverage; one device does not replace the full resolution and aspect-ratio matrix.

Choose a workflow using the project’s actual needs
Unity and Unreal are the natural engine-integrated starting points for projects built with those engines. Playwright fits browser-rendered games. Select based on whether the workflow can set up runtime state, control display configuration, reach the required targets, wait for stable output, apply a suitable visual tolerance, and retain useful evidence in CI or command-line runs. No single fixed resolution list or tool is established as best for every game.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website or browser-rendered game capture, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. Its consent-banner, popup, and chat-widget removal can be turned off per step; its response identifies page verdict and billing status. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. This is a browser capture option, not a replacement for engine-level tests of a native Unity or Unreal build.

Captures differ on every run
Check whether the test reaches the same scene, camera, UI state, and frame each time. Identify animations or changing content and freeze them where practical, or capture at a defined point. For browser tests, Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for consecutive screenshots to stabilize and provides animation controls.
A comparison fails only on one platform or machine
Check the recorded target configuration and compare only with the matching baseline. Platform, operating-system version, and device can matter; Unreal’s automation guide supports grouping results by machine, platform, and operating-system version. Investigate a platform-specific visual difference before broadening tolerance.

Unity test code does not set the intended resolution
Confirm the resolution and capture APIs against the Unity version and target being tested. The cited Unity material describes test modes and execution paths, but does not establish one universal resolution-setting recipe for all versions and targets.

Browser screenshots fail despite a stable game state
Confirm the test uses Playwright’s test runner, because screenshot assertions are documented for that runner. Verify whether the test should compare CSS pixels or device pixels, and whether its animation and difference settings match the expected browser output.
A baseline update would make the failure disappear
Inspect the capture and diff first. Update only when the visual change is expected and approved; otherwise preserve the failure as evidence and fix the underlying state, layout, or rendering issue.
