Test a design system at two levels: verify representative components and states in isolation, then test the combinations and user journeys where they are used in products. A reliable plan checks behavior, visual appearance, accessibility, and integration. Use repeatable stories or a small component gallery, run browser-based checks, compare screenshots with reviewed baselines, and keep human review in the loop.
What a design-system test plan should cover
A design system is more than a collection of components. It includes shared foundations such as color, spacing, and typography, plus reusable components and the rules for combining them. A change to one shared element can affect many screens, so tests should cover both local correctness and downstream use.
- Behavior: Do controls respond correctly to clicks, keyboard input, and state changes?
- Appearance: Do components render as intended across important variants, content lengths, and viewport sizes?
- Accessibility: Can people identify and operate controls, and are relevant issues reviewed beyond automated results?
- Integration: Do components work when composed together in the product contexts that matter?
Do not try to test every possible combination of props. Prioritize by user impact, how widely a component is used, how often it changes, and the risk of a regression.
Choose representative components, states, and contexts
Start with shared foundations and high-impact components: for example, typography and tokens, buttons, form controls, navigation, dialogs, and alerts. For each, list the states and conditions that are important to users and likely to break.

- Keyboard operation, including focus visibility and the expected focus movement.
- Responsive layouts and zoom or reflow conditions relevant to the product.
- Compositions and flows where components influence one another, such as a form with validation inside a dialog.
This is a prioritization checklist, not an instruction to create a separate test for every property combination. A few carefully chosen cases often reveal more than a large set of redundant snapshots.
Make component states repeatable with stories or a gallery
Create a stable way to render each meaningful component state. Storybook stories are one option: its testing workflow uses stories as targets for component, interaction, visual, and accessibility checks. See Storybook’s testing documentation and its guidance on interaction testing.
A small gallery can also serve as a component-test target. Playwright documents component tests that run against a gallery page served by a development server; the component is rendered in a real browser, with real layout and interactions. See Playwright component testing.

Test behavior in a real browser
Write interaction checks around user actions and observable outcomes. A useful test verifies more than that a click handler ran: it checks the resulting UI state, visible feedback, and focus behavior where relevant.
- Render a representative component state from a story or gallery entry.
- Perform the user action, such as clicking a button, entering a value, or moving through controls with the keyboard.
- Assert the visible result, such as an expanded panel, validation message, changed selection, or confirmation.
- Check focus placement and keyboard usability for interactions that move, trap, or restore focus.
Keep isolated component tests focused on the component’s contract. Add a smaller number of product-level checks for the compositions and journeys that cannot be validated in isolation.

Catch visual regressions with reviewed screenshot baselines
Visual regression testing captures screenshots of meaningful stories and compares them with an accepted baseline. Storybook documents visual testing through screenshots of stories, while Chromatic documents tracking baselines and reviewing changes. See Storybook visual testing and Chromatic documentation.
A difference is evidence that pixels changed; it does not establish whether the change is a defect. Inspect the changed region, decide whether the result is intended, and update the baseline only after review.

- Use stable test content and data.
- Wait for fonts and images to finish loading before capture.
- Disable or freeze animations and other time-dependent effects.
- Standardize viewport size and browser conditions between baseline and new runs.
Chromatic is an optional hosted workflow for Storybook visual and accessibility testing; it is not interchangeable with every component or end-to-end test strategy. Choose tools based on framework fit, local feedback, CI behavior, baseline review ownership, and the amount of change-review work your team can sustain.

Combine automated accessibility checks with human review
Run automated accessibility checks against important component states and interaction flows. Storybook’s accessibility addon audits the rendered DOM using heuristics, reports violations, and can surface incomplete results that need confirmation. Its documentation describes the addon as a first line of QA, not a complete accessibility evaluation: Storybook accessibility testing.
Storybook documentation says its axe-core-based checks “automatically catches up to 57% of WCAG issues.” Treat that as Storybook’s qualified vendor-documentation claim, not a universal measurement of how many issues a particular application will catch. An automated pass does not establish WCAG conformance or prove that a component is usable by everyone.
Pair automated checks with review appropriate to the component and product, including:

Run repeatable checks in CI and review failures deliberately
Put deterministic component, visual, and accessibility checks in the pull-request or release workflow. Establish initial visual baselines intentionally, decide who reviews diffs, and track exceptions rather than silently accepting them. Chromatic documents uploading a static Storybook build and running tests against stories, with accessibility results tracked over time; see Chromatic CI documentation.
Keep end-to-end tests for integration paths that matter across the product. Story-centered checks and end-to-end journeys have different coverage purposes; using both selectively avoids asking isolated component tests to prove the whole application works.
Choose a workflow by the question it answers
| Workflow | Useful for | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Storybook testing workflow | Repeatable component states and story-centered component, interaction, visual, and accessibility checks; Storybook docs. | Product-level journeys and human accessibility review. |
| Playwright component testing | Browser-based component tests against a small story-gallery page, with real layout and interactions; Playwright docs. | Every integration path in the consuming application. |
| Chromatic | Hosted visual regression and accessibility workflows for Storybook, including baseline review; Chromatic docs. | Behavioral coverage or a complete accessibility evaluation by itself. |
| Product end-to-end tests | Composed flows and integration behavior in the application. | Efficient exhaustive coverage of every isolated component state. |
These approaches can complement one another. Select according to the test target, framework compatibility, browser realism, CI integration, baseline ownership, and review burden—not on the assumption that one tool establishes total quality.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot of a rendered page or story, ScreenshotNeo can return an image from one GET request. The example captures a rendered Storybook URL; replace the URL with the story URL you need. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://storybook.example.com/?path=/story/button--primary -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These captures can help inspect pages, but they do not replace interactive tests, reviewed visual baselines, or accessibility review.

Troubleshoot common test failures
- Screenshot diffs change from run to run: make content deterministic, wait for fonts and images, freeze animations, and standardize viewport and browser conditions.
- A visual change is reported but the page looks correct: inspect the changed region and compare it with the intended design before updating the baseline; do not auto-accept diffs.
- A component passes alone but fails in the product: add a targeted test for the composition or user journey where the failure occurs.
- An accessibility check reports an incomplete result: follow up manually; the tool is signaling that its automated rule cannot decide the outcome conclusively.
- Automated checks pass but users still encounter barriers: add human checks for keyboard use, focus, zoom or reflow, and assistive-technology behavior as appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a passing automated accessibility test mean a design system conforms to WCAG?
No. Automated checks cover only detectable issues; a pass is not proof of conformance or usability for everyone.
Should every component property combination have its own test?
No. Prioritize representative combinations using user impact, usage, change frequency, and regression risk.
