Test it with an unlisted encoder-based YouTube live stream using the same sermon file, playback route, audio, network, and encoder you plan to use for the public broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then open the watch page on desktop and mobile. An unlisted rehearsal exercises the live delivery path without making the event publicly discoverable.
Before you start: confirm the channel and choose the right event
Confirm livestream access
The church’s YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this check until rehearsal day. YouTube’s live-streaming tips describe these requirements.
Create an unlisted encoder stream
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder-based stream. Set its visibility to Unlisted before it starts; YouTube also offers Public and Private visibility. Unlisted means the stream is not publicly listed, not that it is confidential: anyone with the watch link may be able to view it. Share the link only with the people evaluating the rehearsal. See YouTube’s guidance on going live.
Keep the stream key private
Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. The key identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it, so treat it like a password: do not put it in a public document, message, or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before the public event.

Run a rehearsal that tests the real signal path
- Use the actual sermon recording. Play the same file intended for the public event, through the playback chain and audio routing the church will use. Do not rely only on an encoder’s local preview or a short unrelated clip. YouTube recommends tests include audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Its help pages do not prescribe a particular software media-source setup, so follow the encoder’s current documentation for loading and routing the file rather than assuming one universal click path. - Wait for the Live Control Room preview. Before starting the event, confirm the incoming image appears. Look for a frozen or cropped picture, unexpected overlays or desktop content, and transitions that do not play as intended. Listen for missing, distorted, or out-of-sync audio, including at the beginning and end of the recording.
- Start the test and monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s health indicators and messages while the sermon plays. Check that the stream remains connected through scene or file transitions and that the audio stays present throughout, not just at the opening.
- Check it as a viewer. Open the unlisted watch page from the channel and on a mobile device. Confirm that the link works, the picture and sound are usable, and the stream behaves as expected outside the encoder operator’s workstation.
- End deliberately and inspect what remains. End the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder as appropriate. Check the event’s visibility and archive settings before leaving the video on the channel. If the encoder also made a local recording, verify that file separately.
Choose resolution, bitrate, and network headroom
Use settings the church’s actual upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and recommends RTMPS as the secure extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
These H.264 bitrate examples are YouTube recommendations for the specified settings, not universal targets for every connection:

Check upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends keeping the combined primary and backup stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth, with 20% additional headroom: “primary + backup + 20%.” A speed test is only a snapshot; test on the same wired or wireless connection and at the location intended for the broadcast. Where Wi-Fi is unstable and the streaming computer can be wired to the router, Ethernet is a reasonable option, not a mandatory purchase.
YouTube detects encoder settings in Live Control Room and transcodes the feed for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not make an unstable source connection safe: choose a resolution and bitrate the church connection can maintain. YouTube’s encoder tips suggest setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled time; using that lead time for the public workflow leaves room to spot connection or setup problems. Decide whether you need a live-stream rehearsal or a Premiere

A Premiere is not an encoder test. It plays an uploaded video for viewers together, and YouTube says output above 1080p is not supported for Premieres. Use the format that matches the church’s actual goal. YouTube Premieres
Prepare the public broadcast after the rehearsal
A successful rehearsal shows that this setup worked under rehearsal conditions; it does not prove the venue’s network, file, operator, or schedule will be identical on the day. Before the public event, check the event details and repeat the critical signal-path checks.

- Confirm the correct event visibility, title, thumbnail, and start time.
- Confirm the intended stream key is selected and has not been exposed.
- Confirm the sermon file, audio route, and playback path are ready.
- Open the correct audience access link and make sure the operator can monitor Live Control Room.
- Allow time to start the encoder early and respond to any stream-health messages.
Also confirm that the church has permission to use all sermon footage, music, readings, and other material in the recording. An unlisted test is still a YouTube stream; limiting discovery does not grant rights or guarantee that a public stream will avoid a copyright claim or platform restriction. Review the applicable permissions and YouTube rules before broadcasting.
