Compare an internet speed test run by your router with a test from a computer connected to the router by Ethernet, then compare wired and Wi-Fi results on the same device and in different locations. The pattern points to the part of the connection to check: a low router and wired result suggests the service or router’s incoming connection; a good wired result but slow Wi-Fi points to wireless coverage, settings, or device capability.
Start with three comparable speed tests
A speed test from a Wi-Fi device measures the whole route from your internet service through the router and wireless connection to that device. It cannot, by itself, tell you which segment is slow. Build a comparison while keeping conditions as similar as possible: use the same broadband service, avoid other active downloads, and note the test time and results. Tests can differ because they use different servers or methods, so treat the results as clues rather than exact, interchangeable measurements.

Check for a router-side test
If your router or mesh system offers an internet speed test, run it. Google says the Nest or Google Wifi test measures from the router or primary Wifi point, rather than from a Wi-Fi client: Google Nest and Google Wifi: troubleshoot slow internet. This helps assess the incoming service separately from the wireless hop to a device, although the router and client tests may use different servers or methods.

Test a computer over Ethernet
Connect a capable computer directly to a LAN port on the router with a known-good Ethernet cable. Run a speed test with other heavy network activity paused. Google Fiber recommends a wired connection for the best result and, for its 10 Gbps test scenario, specifies a direct connection and compatible equipment: Google Fiber: run a speed test.

Compare Wi-Fi close by and where it is slow
On the same device, test Wi-Fi near the router, then test again in the room where performance is normally poor. If possible, repeat with another device. Strong Ethernet performance alongside much slower Wi-Fi suggests the wireless path, location, or Wi-Fi client—not necessarily the internet service. Microsoft also recommends testing another device when troubleshooting network connections: Microsoft: fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows.
Use the result pattern to narrow the cause

These patterns suggest what to investigate, not proof of a single fault. Router-side and client tests measure different parts of the connection, and hardware, test server, plan terms, and test method can all affect a result.

Check the wired path before blaming the router
A wired connection is only as fast as its slowest link. The path may include the computer’s Ethernet port or adapter, cable, switch, router LAN port, and the router’s connection to the modem or internet service. Confirm that the cable is plugged into a LAN port, not the router’s Internet/WAN port, and check the capability of each port in the path.
- Read the cable marking. Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable for internet speeds above 100 Mbps. If the installed cable is faulty or below the needed specification, swapping in a known-good cable is a useful test; do not assume a new router is necessary.
- Check port ratings and link speed. Google’s Nest and Google Wifi guidance notes that a slower component can limit a connection to 100 Mbps or 10 Mbps. Those are Ethernet link-capability figures, not a promise that an internet speed test will achieve either throughput. See Google’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Account for adapters and intermediary devices. A USB-to-Ethernet adapter, switch, or laptop port can impose a lower limit than the router or service. Test directly from the computer to a suitable router LAN port to remove a switch or other intermediate link from the comparison.
- Check the whole multi-gig path. For a multi-gig test, the client port, adapter, USB port if used, cable, and router port all need to support the target rate. Google Fiber’s 10 Gbps instructions describe a 10 Gbps-capable LAN connection and direct use of the appropriate router port for that service-specific test: Google Fiber speed-test instructions. Google Fiber’s 2 Gig guidance calls for Cat 6 or greater in its setup and also identifies device, cable, adapter, port, and USB capabilities as factors: Google Fiber: get the most out of your 2 Gig plan. These requirements are specific to Google Fiber’s setups, not universal minimums for every multi-gig network.
Separate a Wi-Fi coverage problem from a device problem
Wi-Fi performance can vary with distance from the router, walls and other physical barriers, the band in use, interference, router or mesh-point placement, and the client device’s wireless capabilities. Google describes these factors in its Nest and Google Wifi troubleshooting guidance and Google Fiber Wi-Fi guidance.

- If one room is slow but a nearby Wi-Fi test is much better, investigate coverage and obstacles before replacing the router.
- If Wi-Fi is slow close to the router on one device but another device performs well there, investigate the slower device’s Wi-Fi radio, supported standards, drivers, and background traffic.
- If multiple Wi-Fi devices are slow even near the router while Ethernet performs well, investigate router Wi-Fi settings, supported bands, and interference.
- If performance changes when many devices are active, repeat after pausing high-bandwidth use. The FCC notes that multiple wireless devices can affect performance in its Broadband Speed Guide.
When to contact your internet provider
If both a router-side test and a properly configured wired test remain below what you expect after checking the local wired path, look for a service outage and contact your ISP. Share the test times, results, whether the test was wired or router-side, and whether other household activity was paused. Google notes that the ISP controls the initial bandwidth and speed entering the home, while local network congestion can also affect what devices experience: Google Nest and Google Wifi troubleshooting.
A Wi-Fi-only result is not enough to establish that the ISP is at fault. Conversely, buying a router or adapter will not fix a service outage, a lower-than-expected service tier, or provider-side congestion. Upgrade equipment only when the comparisons identify that equipment or one of its ports as the limiting link.
